    Wild for a team in first place, even if that is only thanks to an awful division. I suspect this is a franchise that's going to be in the wilderness for a while after this

    Wiggins averaged 97.7 last year in his brief time at Iowa. He sat at the same velo this year in spring training. Jaxon wasn't fully stretched out last year at Iowa (and obviously not in ST), his three starts only covered 9.2 innings. So he probably comes in under that 97.7 as a fully stretched out SP? But he's been averaging ~96.5 in short relief and ~95.5 as a SP. So even if 97.7 is a little inflated he's still probably missing about 1.5 MPH?

    Trent Thornton's velo has exploded recently? Ive generally been a skeptic but if he's sitting north of 96 instead of 94 and change....

    Yeah i think he's going to need an offseason to get that full velo back Command was pretty solid though. 3/4 first pitch strikes and 50% of his pitches in the zone overall

    I don't want to get too far ahead of myself over 4 games but Triantos looks great back at Iowa. If this keeps up over a much larger sample I wonder if we can point to his little vacation to Chicago as a developmental milestone.

    Coppola shoved. Last 5 starts 22 IP, 7 BB (7.9%), 21 K (23.8%), 1.64 ERA The ERA overstates the level of performance quite a bit but he appears to be conquering the level. IMO he's probably in the same boat as Mule where he should start next year back at SB but have a quick line to AA if he comes out of the gate well.

    Good for Ethan. It's not the highest octane stuff but he's been fantastic for SB

    Grant Kipp is shoving in relief. I feel like next year he should come to camp as a SP to play things safe but the plan should be to get him to the bigs in short relief by mid-season.

    It has to be weighed against the fact he just turned 24, but Kade Snell's been on quite a heater since he came off the IL

    Seattle's the most obviously better than their record team in the league and Safeco's a tough visit regardless. This is very much a road trip where you're hoping for a split (1 in Seattle, 2 in AZ?) and 2-4's pretty understandable.

    This was his second game in three days. I was reading in the Athletic the last day or two that the last box for him to check is upping the frequency and making sure he recovers properly. My guess is he gets back to backs soon (next week?) and once he does he's back up in the bigs.

    Mule was very good through 5 and then started getting a little dodgy in the 6th Feels like he's had a lot of outings like this. I'm really excited to see him next year. It feels like he's at an inflection point where an offseason of conditioning might nudge him over the edge (in a good way).

    Every team is going to have examples. Teams streak and slump over the course of a baseball season. Are the Cubs slumpier than other teams? I don't know, but "they got shut out yesterday" or "they scored 20 one day and 0 the next" aren't meaningful in telling us. Something like "they've scored 2 runs or less in 40% of their games, the average among playoff teams is 20%" tells us something. But that requires looking at other teams. Frankly this is usually just another variant of "they can't hit good pitching" which involves cherry-picking who we're classifying as good and who we're not to try to back into a point.

    It's pretty easy to verify if a team has an inordinate amount of low scoring games. Always assume this is one of those "wahhh only my teams!" fan venting things unless some data gets brought to the table.

    Wow great inning for Jaxon Wiggins. Guy needed it.

    94.4 average on a night where he threw 70+ pitches. It's not quite as high octane as when he was at the height of his prospectdom but definitely looks like a major leaguer. And he got a ton of groundballs. Another start or three like this and you probably have to 40 man him this winter?

    It's not a great staff to begin with and Davis Martin, their de facto ace, went on the IL basically right at the start of a stretch of 16 straight without an off day.

    I think if you want to dream you're looking at like Logan Webb. He's a side-armer who sits 92-93. He basically gets righties out with funk and then lefties out with his stellar changeup. And Webb's change is like a 70 or 80 grade pitch so that's not to yada yada over Jostin acquiring one but that is the dream scenario. Ryan Thompson is a side-armer with similar velo, but he's a sinkerballer. So something like that but more whiff oriented than GB oriented?

    Assuming he's got another hot streak in them that gets his wRC+ to more like 120, I would much rather have split neutral(ish) Busch than premium platoon player Busch.

    I suspect there is extra value for lefties who can hit lefties that doesn't show up in WAR. That's not to say it's some mystical black box, but just needs to be accounted for elsewhere. I remember seeing an analysis that utility guys were worth an extra ~half a win per year. I suspect this is of similar magnitude.

    Jostin Florentino had a ROUGH initial go of it at South Bend. But his last 9 starts covering 2 months: 38.2 IP, 3.02 ERA, 50 K (32.9%), 15 BB (9.9%) It's not all sunshine, 8 dongs allowed. But kind of like Mule it feels like we're seeing a lot more good than bad even if I wouldn't consider the level conquered yet. And like Mule he's still perfectly young, if he was an American college kid he'd have been drafted last month.
