  1. Not that anyone cares but the Cubs coming into today have scored 12 more runs than they should have due to sequencing luck...
  2. Curious if they let Myers go back out there. 40 pitches in an inning seems to be the universal line for "that's it you're done for the day" and Myers threw 37 so it's just about there.
  3. Arraez is a bit overrated but this return is still very underwhelming. Don't get why they made this move so early.
  4. I just noticed in the upcoming Padres series we draw Darvish-Musgrove-Cease again. And of course Freddy Peralta in the finale of this series tomorrow. Please score some runs today so we can get some semblance of offense on this homestand?
  5. Lovelady in through Frelick, Alzolay in for Contreras-Adames, Leiter to the house? Or do you prioritize clean innings over matchups?
  6. Curious if Wesneski gets the 7th, not really Craig's style but the bullpen's a bit shredded.
  7. I imagine the intention was to have him up through Bellinger's IL stint but yeah you've gotta cut bait.
  8. Craig needs to *strongly* consider a legitimate piggyback situation as the rotation returns to health. I do imagine Wesneski and Brown are going to stay up, but why limit them to 1-2 innings stints or whatever when you can probably get 3 to 5? At minimum let them get exactly once through the order out of the pen.
  9. I really like how Wesneski's solution to the problem of lefties hitting endless dongs off of him last winter was "what if I just run a 60% groundball rate against them?"
  10. I have yet to see anything more specific than "this weekend"
  11. Joe Ross is pretty bad against lefties so hopefully this is the game where the offense breaks back out and we can enjoy a nice comfortable win
  12. Steele Back on Monday! And then Kyle is getting another rehab start
  13. I think you'd start Wisdom against most lefties and a decent number of righties, guys like Houser from yesterday. I do feel like his runway on this roster probably isn't too much longer though. I'd be a little surprised if he was still around in August. You've got the kids coming up behind him plus the strong possibility of a deadline acquisition. That three catchers situation would certainly be temporary and free up one roster spot, but the other would have to come down between Wisdom’s power and someone like Madrigal or Mastrobuoni's versatility.
  14. I do feel a bit bad for Madrigal because he does seem to perform when given regular playing time but when he's given regular playing time his hamstring explodes. Ultimately I would probably swap in Mastrobuoni. He's not going to give you as much contact or as much defense as Madrigal, but he's still a plus in both respects and he's a LHH bat. With how well Tauchman is playing there aren't really any lefties on the bench when everyone is healthy. And I don't really want Wisdom as the backup 3B. Another thing I've been thinking about on the bench is something TT brought up in giving Curt Casali the 3rd catcher role. Gomes is looking pretty cooked to start the year. And realistically because Hoerner is a built in backup SS there's usually one bench spot that tends to go pretty neglected on this roster. When Seiya and Bellinger are back I'd look to run a bench of: Gomes, Casali, Mastro, Wisdom, Tauchman Let Casali get as ingrained with the staff as possible and start picking up some Gomes starts. If Yan isn't able to turn it round sometime in June we start really thinking about dropping down to an Amaya/Casali backstop pairing.
  15. Owen Caissie is the 2nd youngest hitter in AAA after James Wood (aka one of the headliners of the Juan Soto deal). Despite that after today's game he is running a line of ..299/.443/.464 and pretty key for him has his K rate down to 29.5%. Given that his walk rate is 18.9%, that strikeout rate is IMO not at all problematic. He needs to generate a bit more over the fence power like he did last year. And you'd like to see him successfully work his way through a deep slump. But he is not far off. If god forbid we still/again have two starting OFs on the IL a month from now I think Caissie'd be an option.
  16. I'll say the results weren't there today but the bullpen actually pitched well with 6 Ks, no BBs (1 HBP) and a good number of groundballs. This felt like a bit of karma for all of Neris' smoke and mirrors thus far. But if they keep pitching like today the bullpen issues today won't hold up.
  17. We are not there yet...he has to face some tougher teams and he has to face some teams a second time. But we're moving towards a point with Brown where you're not even worries about performance you're just counting innings and pitches like they're ammo and trying to gameplan out volume.
  18. This is very much cherry picking, but Sam McWilliams in outings where he's faced 10 or fewer batters: 6 G, 15.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 1 HBP, 1 HR, 27 Ks, 2.35 ERA, 8.6% BB, 46.5% K His fastball is averaging 96 MPH over 3ish inning outings. I think he might legitimately be a thing once they start shortening him up to 1-2 inning bursts.
  19. Feels like we get a nice easy laugher or a fanbase meltdown because we lost to Adrian Houser. Cubs have a bullpen rest advantage today. Leiter is almost certainly down while everyone else should be good to go. Whereas for the Mets Ottavino, Lopez, and Foley should all be down.
  20. I don't get as worked up about the pen as most. Especially when before the past ~week they were forced to throw essentially 50% of the team's innings. That said things are clearly in flux at the top, so I'd like to see Craig start pushing the guys who are actually performing up the depth chart quickly. Ride the hot hand essentially. Like I would have given Keegan Thompson the save opportunity tonight. Daniel Palencia looked incredible on Sunday, I'd give him a healthy bump in leverage his next outing. And of course when the rotation gets back closer to full strength Ben Brown needs a real look as a late inning option.
