  1. And then from last night reasonably good news on Wicks and seemingly great news on Bellinger
  2. Steele & Hendricks both likely back in the next 10-15 days Seiya probably not far off from a rehab either?
  3. I don't know what specifically goes into this guy's model vs. what shows up on FG but he gets quote tweeted into my timeline pretty regularly by people I respect. But if Hayden's cutter is now an impact pitch to go along with his sweeper and his fastball/changeup/sinker are all grading out as vaguely average we might be cooking. Especially with the way Hayden fills up the strikezone.
  4. I don't know Casali's reputation as a pitcher whisperer, but with how rough Gomes has looked to open this year I'm starting to wonder if Curt's the best option at backup catcher right now. With how injured the team is that's not a move you make right now, but it's probably something to consider if trends continue another couple of weeks.
  5. This is probably the toughest game this series, but honestly isn't *that* scary. I feel like all of these games are winnable, but at the same time Wednesday's the only game that feels like an absolute should win. Feels like an obvious split.
  6. I'm interested in what things the team does to maximize rest during this stretch as guys (hopefully come back off the IL). Like last night the team teased a possible minimum stay on the IL for Bellinger, which would bring him back Sunday-ish. With PCA producing, do you send down an infielder (Mervis) so you can run a Tauchman-PCA-Bellinger OF for a few days and get Happ the rest he so clearly needs? In the rotation, with Steele's ETA you only need one more start out of Wesneski, but do you take two in order to get everyone an additional rest day with minimal roster manipulation?
  7. Correct, they don't. Lovelady's missing a well above average amount of bats (both in and out of zone), throwing an obscene number of strikes, and most of the contact against him has been on the ground. Oh and he's generating mostly soft contact, so there's not a Kyle Hendricks situation happening.
  8. It's 2024 we can do better than this
  9. That is quite some thunder in the bat for a 19 year old
  10. Lovelady's pitched extremely well at Iowa and I believe did the increasingly common "dump your gyro slider for a cutter + sweeper" move. I'm much more optimistic he's going to turn out to be a thing than Brewer or any of the other vets stashed at Iowa.
  11. The Cubs got blown out yesterday, Jordan Wicks has a forearm injury, and Chris Morel got pretty banged up However all is not lost This is what the depth is for. Hayden Wesneski is up and depth oready to step right in tonight. The Sox are throwing out Tanner Houck. He's a real tough cookie so this game would have been dicey even with Wicks Go Cubs
  12. I already love Caleb so much
  13. Presumably Edge will get taken care of in FA or trade. Because Poles acknowledged it as a need last night when discussing the Kiran pick so it's not like they consider it settled.
  14. Ryan Poles is an extremely cool dude
  15. I'm not sure if it speaks more to the quality of the Cubs' depth or the fall from grace of the Red Sox but it's wild that we're throwing our #6 or #7 starter at Fenway and this game feels like a tossup.
  16. Depending on exactly how they play it you'd expect: - A true rehab start next Wednesday or Thursday - A second rehab start early the week after during the Padres series - Justin to return during that Pittsburgh/Atlanta road trip I would think you would not want to subject a guy's first start back to be against friggin Atlanta, so again depending on the particulars maybe they give him a 3rd rehab outing just to avoid that?
  17. I actually kind of love that PCA is so aggressive. We had some conversation over the winter, I forget the genesis, but basically I think the perfect lineup is not 9 Juan Soto types it's like 7 Juan Sotos and two Pablo Sandovals. You want some aggression in your lineup and you want some hair on fire to make sure you never get to the point of being passive. So with PCA he does not need to try and cosplay as Mike Tauchman or Ian Happ at the plate. If he wants to swing at like 60% of the pitches he sees, great. I think there are two areas to work on though. First he's got to tone down the chase. He definitely did not do that frequency at Iowa this year, but hopefully made progress in terms of degree. The other is to find the specific areas in the strikezone to hyperfocus on. This is where 1908's note about him getting worked up and away comes in. If Pete can hold back a bit there and then go hog wild down and in that's plenty. Luis Robert has great success with a similar deal where he swings 80%+ in and especially up and tones it down to a still pretty high 70% down and away.
  18. Crawford is the Sox version of Assad. Young guy pitching legitimately well but the sparkling results are due more to quite a few favors from the baseball gods. You'd much rather have the Cubs and Shota tonight, even on the road. Houck on Sunday looks to be legitimately breaking out, so much like the Houston series you'd love to grab the first two against Boston so game 3 is just gravy.
  19. A lot of very good WRs aren't necessarily monsters right out of the gate as rookies (someone like Ja'Marr Chase is still more exception than rule IMO), so having Allen for a year and letting him walk is kind of perfect. Plus Keenan's apparently really great as like a player coach type. so I think there's real value having him around Williams and Odunze from a soft skills standpoint.
  20. I'm sure it is because it's what I want the plan to be but I'd buy that's the Bears plan (let's add the slim chance Alt gets to 9 as a stay scenario pretty please?)
  21. Yeah the ERA will catch up to the peripherals eventually, but even the peripherals say Assad's been a good #4 starter dating back to last August. I agree I don't know how you can pull him out of the rotation unless you trade him. And with the way he's pitching and with him still being slated for a league minimum salary next year he would go a long way towards something very fun in trade.
  22. Murphy or frankly any of the defenders are guys I'd love to have in the 12-15 range but I think are a bit rich to take at 9. So like do it cool but trade back and grab them there, even if you might end up with your second choice.
  23. Chase Anderson lasted just 1.2 IP for the Red Sox today, so that should stress their bullpen a little heading into tomorrow's series.
