  1. His MLB AVG was depressed by an abysmal .210 BAbip, and while his K rate is troubling, he did walk in 13.7% of his MLB PAs as a 21 year old. The obvious caveat is that it is only 153 PA, but that cuts both ways.
  2. Likewise, but I imagine the only way we get LoMo back is one of two ways: 1) We ship over a pretty good prospect and/or prospect package with him while picking up at least half of his salary 2) We're eating all of his salary That being said... I'm holding out hope for LoMo. That would be so [expletive] spectacular I could actually see this happening. Ricketts has reportedly given Theo and Co. permission to do so. Perhaps they view eating bad contracts in order to gain better prospects as a sort of backdoor, post-CBA means of paying overslot for young, team-controlled talent.
  3. I like this deal. Marshall is a free agent after this season, at which point he will be 30 years old looking for closer money. This was the time to get value for him, as he is unlikely--great reliever though he may be--to be a difference maker for the 2012 Cubs.
  4. I know its a typo (and I dislike nitpicking as much as the next person), but I find strangely hilarious the idea of Theo and Sharpie engaging in a biting contest to decide ownership of a house.
  5. I'd rather have had Crisp. Better defense, good baserunning/speed. Regress Reed's .394 BAbip and their bats aren't a lot different either.
  6. The results at the plate were pretty good, but almost certainly unsustainable. Holy crap, he walked 5 times and struck out 63 times in just 266 PA? And was HBP 11 times. He is the living definition of Hacking Grinder.
  7. That's because Dusty will use him strictly as a situational lefty.
  8. La ineficiencia del mercado nuevo.
  9. No member of the Cubs front office, nor the manager, have publicly stated that the Cubs are pursuing Fielder. If there is any kind of "smokescreen", it is the Cubs feigning disinterest. If the Cubs conceal their intent to obtain Fielder, Boras cannot use their public statements as leverage against other suitors of Fielder, thus raising the price.

  11. Am I alone in being underwhelmed by Justin Smoak? His walk rate has always been good/great, but I don't see a whole lot else to be excited about. A .283/.401/.458 line over 477 PCL PAs doesn't seem particularly noteworthy (again, with the exception of IsoD). Educate me, people who know more about MiLB.
  12. Someone's excited about the upcoming NBA season...
  13. So there is a better than certain chance that the Cubs have the high bid? Phil Rogers is a graduate of the Peter King School of Writing.
  14. I'd honestly rather discuss toaster [expletive].
  15. I clearly quit paying attention; at what point did he leave our system?
  16. Last season, Prince took an extra base in 26% of his opportunities, ranking him 191/209 in MLB (arbitrary cutoff: 400 PA). An aside: 2 worst players in this sample, at 8% and 11%, respectively, were Konerko and Dunn.
  17. 1 for 45 going first to third on a single in 2009. For comparison, 35 year old David Ortiz was 7 for 36 last season. I admit I had never really perused his baserunning stats. They're [expletive] hideous.
  18. If we're talking about 6 years, put me down as a "yes".
  19. How long a contract is implied here?
  20. Didn't think this deserved its own thread, but it seems that getting fans into the new Marlins' ballpark will be as much a logistical issue as it is a marketing issue. Team officials have repeatedly suggested that fans "use public transit" to get to the park, however no one ever bothered to note that there are no public transit stations within a mile of the facility. The county is scrambling to find funds amounting to $234,000 (i.e. ~0.1% of the money the Marlins have committed to FA signings thus far this offseason) for a shuttle system to bridge the gap. The Marlins, as is their wont, have refused to assist in financing the project. Link
  21. BUT HE WON A GOLD GLOVE!
  22. Rosenthal is claiming the value of the contract to be between $34-37 million.
