  1. Breaking News - The Cubs will be signing Pudge any day now.   STOP. EXISTING. Dude...it's called HUMOR! Learn about it! Hahaha
  2. yeah i also thought drabek was a little overrated. frankly i think he ends up in the bullpen long term. Yeah I never got it either. I don't think he ever had a K/9 rate above 9. And his numbers in AAA were Jay Jackson-like. And now it appears his control is falling off a damn cliff. I like Travis Wood's chances going forward better than Drabek.

  4. My Sox fan buddy was talking about how they were shopping Quentin and thought this would bolster their farm system. I expressed doubt that he had much trade value. He disagreed. I was right.
  5. http://www.bleachernation.com/2011/12/29/lukewarm-stove-byrd-lidge-garza-jackson-wood-marmol-callaspo-marshall/ Given all the history, it makes sense that he'd happily sign with Hendry for well below market, but not be inclined to do so under Theo. It's possible that even the "gentleman's agreement" doesn't hold true anymore, which would be a shame. Oh well, it's just business.
  6. I feel like I'm at an Occupy rally. There are a dozen teams that had a higher profit than the Cubs, including the Dodgers, Pirates, and Padres. If you had 700 mil to invest where would you put it? They would have made more than 23 mil if they invested it in T-Bills. I didn't know the Cubs were a charity. Try as I might, I can't figure out just what the hell this means. Is that just another place where you'd feel out of touch and unpopular? I guess I can buy that.
  7. Just quoting that again in case someone missed it
  8. A Dempster salary dump would piss me off beyond all measure
  9. Nice, thanks for posting. I wonder if Al will ask about the new CBA and whether the front office saw something like this coming or if they were totally caught off guard. I'd also like to know how Tom plans on selling effing tickets next year, but I don't expect any hard-hitting questions.
  10. sorry Jake, but this statement really cracked me up The halcyon days of finishing 15 games out of first are OVER
  11. It wouldn't make much sense to commit 5 mil in payroll for next year just to get slightly better prospects in this deal. We could have spent that money in Latin America and come out ahead for it. Theo has said it before... it's just about trying to acquire assets. DeJesus is a good player who signed for cheap. Depending on what happens through the rest of this offseason and the next one, DeJesus may be able to contribute to a contending Cubs team in years 2 & 3 of his contract... failing that, he may very well be worth a small package of interesting prospects to a contending team. I suppose you're right, but I should have been more clear. Knowing that DeJesus was signed for 2 years, I was implying that it was a move looking to 2013 but on the surface, could be looked at as a cheap way to save face next year (aka, why would we trade Marshall/Garza/Soto for anything less than a good deal?). He most certainly is a cheap and useful asset, so I didn't want it as simplistic as "Cubs spent 4-5 mil extra to get a guy from the Reds' top 10 rather than top 25," but rather that Cubs signed a useful player in a dubious offseason to muddy the waters a bit and maximize trade value for guys who don't figure to be with us after 2012. I've now officially given this too much thought.
  12. Soto, too, but they'll never ever be on the same squad.
  13. I really love this trade, and I think this might be the fruits of some careful misdirection by Theo and co. The signings of Dejesus and Johnson, for instance, would not be typical of a club undergoing a full rebuild and punting the next season. However, they were necessary to plant some doubt in the (admittedly dumber of the) GM's minds in order to maximize Marshall's value in a trade. Now I fully expect us to do something strange that breaks the rebuild mode again (sign Kuroda for a 2-3 year incentive-laden deal, for instance) before we dump Garza for a king's ransom. And I'd be just fine with that.
  14. Yeah, two stellar returns for young, team-controlled pitchers so far.
  15. My first reaction was "Oh, hey, there's the Theo I wanted." Same here.
  16. Boy, you showed him Mr Mod! well, moderator. we just say moderator. I cackled
  17. theo is going to hold out for his non-union mexican equivalent (senor kurodo) and pay him 900 dollars to pitch for us next season and give us -4.5 war while sneaking the payroll in just under 100M. That makes more sense
  18. If we sign him...I'll be kind of confused
  19. I know some Green Bayers who (more or less) proudly cite a statistic that shows like a two-fold increase in local domestic abuse cases after a Packers loss.
  20. I'm in. Is there any chance of getting Oddibe McDowell on the coaching staff? Both these posts are excellent
  21. Can I not hear the term "kiddie rape" ever, ever again?
  22. I'm brimming with anticipation to see how much they pay him. I'm hoping for 3/40 or thereabouts with an option to push it to 52. That would be sufficiently awful. EDIT: Looks like 3/33. Still pretty bad
