  1. a buddy of mine from newcastle is totally excited about this, and, apparently, so are all of his mates back home.
  2. guess alex was really embarrassed by the last couple of months http://thebiglead.com/?p=3934#more-3934 (apologies if i'm late to the party)
  3. as an alumnus, i'm totally excited with this seemingly last-minute turn-of-events. all the rumors about brady hoke made me want to burn my diploma. the fact that he's bringing gibson (db coach) and magee (oc) might mean debord's gone. excellent.
  4. i'm a little confused. when the cubs.com article says they offered him a 1-year deal, etc., etc., isn't this tendering him a contract? No. The tender, I believe, requires some official paperwork. I'm sure the offer was more or less verbal, and probably significantly below the permissable arbitration level. In other words, they would have had to tender a contract offer of $3m (or close), and they probably said, "Hey Mark, we'll offer you 1 year for $1.5m". gotcha .. makes sense. thanks.

  6. didn't turk wendell try to do that? pitch for free or something? or get paid in shark's teeth?
  7. in these circumstances, isn't it usually up to the club receiving the player? i thought ptbnl deals typically involved a club getting to choose from a list of players who they want.
  8. Hahhahahaha, if somebody gritty and Texan said that he'd be a total team player, but since he's some Cal-eye-forn-eye-aaaaa pretty boy, he's not a team player. I heard that his teammates nicknamed him sunshine that didn't go totally unnoticed.
  9. wasn't this because other teams figured prior would be non-tendered and could sign him without giving up anyone else?
  10. i know we're all very emotionally invested in the cubs. we wax nostalgic about what was and what could've been. we get swept up in all of it. but, let's be honest about this: it was strictly a business decision. the cubs don't feel that the risk associated with the uncertainty of prior's health was worth meeting his demands (remains to be seen). prior thinks he can get more money with another team (definitely). prior probably felt disrespected. hendry probably felt disrespected. but, the bottom line is, money mends all wounds.
  11. This is even more interesting: According to a source with the Sox, they were told by Fukudome’s agent, Joe Urbon, that despite the higher bid by the Sox, the reasoning behind the decision was that Fukudome wanted to be an organization’s first Japanese player, as well as his desire to play his natural position of right field. i love that the cubs totally stuck it to the sox
  12. What next, are you going to talk about his VORP? Are you freaking kidding me Jim? Did you finally realize the Damien Jacksons and Neifi Perez's of the world have a fundamental problem with them. Jim has mentioned OBP a lot in recent years. Although I felt he was just paying lip service after having people like Bruce Miles ask about it repeatedly. The one concern I still have is that he likes OBP, only if it comes with high AVG. In other words, he still doesn't see the problem with the lack of walks. Hopefully Fukudome is a signal that is changed. just wait till he's benched ("he's pressing") or booed for a 270/400 line
  13. YOUR face is just beyond brutal sure, but nobody's falsely claiming that I'm hot pics plz thx
  14. it's funny to me that cabrera was traded for a guy (miller) who's a year older
  15. and what's florida's payroll going to be? like 8 dollars or something? this is ridiculous. no wonder they have no fans.
  16. it really irritates me when players are ridiculed for exercising a rightful, contract-guaranteed clause -- a clause only available because management allowed its inclusion. arod's timing, however, was a little off-putting, imho.
  17. how does the "ignore" function work again? :)
  18. didn't realize they were playing in amsterdam
  19. does anyone actually think that marshall will be with the cubs next season? given how his role dramatically (and, perhaps, inexplicably) diminished towards the end of this season and how many (potential) options we have for one spot in the rotation for next season, i'd be very surprised if the cubs keep him.
  20. I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that they had hired the White Sox groundskeeper to do the job (he previously did Fenway among others). I was under the assumption that he was going to work on the field this winter, but haven't heard anything since. that's what i thought too .. at least that's what the word was after the concert (police? dmb?) reportedly tore up the field.
  21. pretty hilarious take at tcr.
  22. Say what you want about Stone, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't pick up Trachsel's option. and he'd trade the entire system for oswalt
  23. I've always wondered what I would do if I went to a baseball game between two teams that I didn't care about. In this case, I would probably go and just pretend that it's the world series. living in dc and detroit the last 8 years, i've done this frequently. i tend to drink a lot.
