  1. I'm also anxious to see if Aardsma retains his mid- to high-90's heat. The Cubs will certainly have arms to go get something at the deadline. I just hope it isn't Soriano. but what do they really go for? if cedeno can keep it up, and jh is going to be stubborn about jones, where does anyone go? Unless Jones can really turn his career around, it isn't going to be hard to find someone better than him to play RF. Heck, he might already be in the system. Pie is batting .500 in his first 5 games at AAA. That is definately some great news.
  2. Yep. Going 2 for 4 is very good. And it came at the right time when the Cubs needed it at the time. He's up to .125 on the year. 4 RBI in 5 games though. That's what he is here for, to drive in runs. I'd like to see him end up with 80-90 RBI's on the year. I think he'll turn around.
  3. 161-1 this year. I'm calling it.
  4. Nope. It was a completely unexciting average Cubs game. You didn't miss anything.
  5. Give me a break. Pitching has not been the problem with this team, its been offense. It has alwys been offense, last year the Cubs were near the top in HRs, SLG, and BA. And only in the middle of the pack in runs scored. Same in 2003 and 2004. The Cubs have the pitching to win, but not the offense. So are you saying the Cubs shouldn't try to upgrade? That is pretty assinine. Didn't we solve the relief pitching problem with the Howry, Eyre, and Williamson signings? I think we have enough starting pitching to get by. I think we should give Ronny, Murton, and Jones a chance to produce before we go out and trade good starting pitching to get Abreu. Don't forget we traded away Cy Young runner up Dontrelle Willis.

  7. In previous years, he either leaves Marshall in and hopes for the best, or he goes to one of few reliable guys in the bullpen whom he has managed to already overuse inside of the first five games. Or he goes to a bum who serves up more than just two runs, and without getting a strikeout first. An early trip to the bullpen always spelled doom, but if they turn out to be as good as they seem so far, we could be in for a very fun season. Exactly. And, in past years, if he goes to one of the reliable guys to get out of a jam in the fifth inning, he would still have to put in one of the crummy guys later in the game who, inevitably, would end up giving up more runs. Look at our pen's stats so far: Apr 3: 5 pitchers, 4 1/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 5 SO Apr 5: 4 pitchers, 4 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 SO Apr 7: 2 pitchers, 2 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO Apr 8: 4 pitchers, 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO Apr 9: 4 pitchers, 4 2/3 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO Aside from the walk problem in the first two games, the pen has been lights out. 3 ER in five games for a 1.44 ERA. Looks awesome to me. I know we'll have our rough games, but it's encouraging so far.
  8. I knew he wasn't going to come in and hit 25 or 30 HR's, but I figured he would be one of the better offensive catchers in the league. I don't have any numbers on him coming through in the late innings, but I just seem to feel confident that he's going to get the clutch hit because I've seen him do it numerous times.
  9. Yeah. I don't want to hear opposing players say "wow Wrigley is awesome. I think that I get more ready to play a game there as I do anywhere else." I want to hear players complain about it.
  10. If we can have the whole pen pitching well then Dusty won't have to worry about overworking one or two players. Eyre and Ohman as lefties. Howry and Williamson as righties. Dempster as the closer. The big thing in previous years is that Dusty didn't have any faith in the pen because they stunk. This year there is no reason he shouldn't have faith in the pen. Hopefully it works out well. I just know that I love our pen this year.
  11. The pen has looked wonderfully strong so far this year. Such a huge change from the past few years. I think I'm going to be surprised when our pen blows a game this year whereas in previous years I expected them to blow it. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come for the right arms of Prior and Wood. Pen that Dusty trusts means he won't go Grady Little on us and leave the starters in too long.
  12. I've been touting Barrett since the Cubs picked him up in 2004. He always seems to come up with the big hit. Over the course of a season it doesn't seem like he does a whole lot, but I think the last two games prove my point. That's what I know Barrett for: the clutch hits.
  13. Yeah, especially KoJock!!! I was even happier whan Jacque hit that home run because it was him that hit it. I still would have been happy if another player hit a home run but I don't think anyone else hitting one, with the exception of a pitcher doing it, would have made me happier.
  14. Yes. Yes he did. Right when he hit it I thought "alright, the game is at least tied." The the LF kept going back and I stood up and put my arms in the air as the ball soared onto Waveland. I started jumping up and down and screaming. Then about 20 minutes later the cops showed up and I got a noise violation. Well, I made the last part up. But the rest is true.
  15. Put in a Redbird there and it will be perfect.
  16. I'm still baffled at how we managed to get Murton with Nomar in that trade in 2004.
  17. We have a day off tomorrow... shouldn't be a big deal. Anyway, did anyone thing the crowd reaction/tension in this game/energy makes this feel like a playoff game in April? That reaction to the Granny is reminicent of the crowd when Woody hit a HR in game 7, though obviously not QUITE as raucous. It just feels like a playoff game to me. That's an excellent point. After Ramirez walked you could tell that even with just a base hit the crowd was going to erupt.
  18. Nice long summery of the inning. Gotta love it. Five runs on three hits, way to go STL pitchers.
  19. BTW on another note and I'm not sure where the thread was. But we have seen numerous shots of the painted on tops of chairs in the Cubs dugout that people were talking about. Just to confirm it.
  20. That's awesome. I love it when you can hear fans chanting on tv. I went to a Giants-Dodgers game at Pac Bell a couple years ago when Grissom was CF for LA and a Giants fans in left center started to say "What's the matter with Grissom?" and the rest of section would say in unison "He's a bum" We talked to some fans that had season tickets and I guess the guy does it every series with every CF. Then a couple months later I was watching a Giants game on tv and I heard them doing the "He's a bum" chant again. I started laughing uncontrolably.
  21. The only people that aren't on it are [fill in the blank with a word impling lack of matter between the ears] that claim he's defense is more of a liabilty than his offense. Ahahahahaha. Not that Barrett is as good offensively as Piazza, but nobody ever complained about Piazza's defense when he was hitting the ball well.
  22. How could you not swing at that Murton. That looked like the exact same pitch that Barrett crushed.
