I think another former Marlin has worked out well for us. I think his name is Derrek Lee? I'm not sure on the stats but I've heard that he's a decent first baseman. Any truth to this?
I think it depends on how well we think our young pitchers will do in the majors. If we have faith in Marshall, Guzman, etc. then there is no need to keep Maddux. Also depends on if Prior/Wood/Miller comeback healthy. Maddux would command decent money and if two of the three come back healthy and pitch well that would still leave us with three good pitchers. I don't think we need to pay Maddux a high salary to be a fourth starter. I do hope he has a good year though. We need him and Z to pitch well early on the keep the team stable.
Gold Gloves are based on reputation. Furcal, Wilson, Rollins, and probably some others will get consideration before Cedeno is even thought of. Agreed. If a veteran has won a GG before and he has close to as good a defensive season as a young guy, he vet is most likely going to win the GG.
Only 2 of those you listed had more Win Shares than Barrett last year. Fine he is great, but shouldn't a big league catcher be a little better at catching the ball? Piazza never was. With catchers you generally have to pick one trait or the other. Generally, but not all the time, a great hitting catcher isn't going to be great defensively and vice versa. Then you get guys that are average at both. It just depends on your preference.
It doesn't appear to be serious. He is listed as day to day, but should definitely miss at least one start. Though there seems to be some dispute as to when he left the game and on who's HR he was injured. Well our outfield was chasing a lot of HR's yesterday so it would be hard to say who's he was chasing.
3rd, not home. Gamecast says that he got caught stealing twice, one at third and once at home. with two outs, Barrett was caught in a rundown b/w 1st and 2nd, so Lee broke for the plate, and was thrown out. Ah, thanks for the clarification.
Apparently you didn't hear the time Ozzie sang it. or Ditka, or Gordon. Ozzy was downright horrible. But at least with him it wasn't a surprise. I actually laughed at how bad he was.
Yep! The Reds are lucky that the Cubs only scored 4 runs today. Wow, thats unreal. The most surprising part of that is that Adam Dunn didn't make any of them.
Based on what I've seen, yes. Bronson Arroyo takes you deep twice and you've got some deep issues. Next thing you know Tom Glavine's going 'oppo' on you. Exactly. Giving up HR's to Griffey and Dunn is one thing. Giving up HR's to Arroyo is another. It's something to worry about.
I've been complaining about the Cubs pathetic bullpen for a few years. I've said it on this board a few times, but I thought the best moves of the offseason were the Howry and Eyre signings. It doesn't take a former player to realize that.
I think this is the best thing the Cubs could do. Don't set a return date because then it puts pressure on the player to come back by then. Or the player may think that they can make it back before the set date and will try harder to do it and end up getting injured. Anyways, I think it's a good idea and I don't mind them doing it.
Anybody have any information on Jones's injury other than the fact that he left the game early with a strained right hamstring or is that the only info that has been released so far?
I think it's a line that the reporters always have to ask when talking about a guy that is hasn't worked out as expected in a certain town whether that means due to injuries, on the court issues, off the court issues, etc. In Prior's case it means injuries.
