  1. What about walks?
  2. this is not football. there is nowhere near the parity, and the schedule is not made years in advance. the schedule makers know exactly who they are matching up against who. good teams become bad and bad become good incrementally in baseball, with few exceptions (this years Marlins being one, and a fine example of what it takes to go from good to bad). you can pretend that it's hard to predict whether the WhiteSox, Twins and Braves will be good and the Rockies and Royals will be bad, but that's being pretty damn naive. while it may appear minute to you, this division very well could be decided by a game or two. the Cubs could go 9-6 against the Cards, play exactly equal to the Cards with every common opponent in baseball, and still lose the division. those 10 or so games where the Cubs have considerably harder competition very well could be the difference in this 162 game season. thus, in my opinion, a legitimate issue to piss and moan about. Believe it or not there is actually more parity in baseball than in football. Basketball is actually the worst. I wrote an article on it for my school paper a couple weeks ago. Since 1980: MLB: 18 WS Champs in 25 seasons (no 1994) NFL: 13 SB Champs in 26 seasons NBA: 7 Finals Champs in 26 seasons
  3. I just wasn't sure what you meant by Sox/Yanks. But I couldn't agree with you more. There are plenty of interleague matchups that are entertaining with different plotlines. The Cubs in 2005 playing in Yankee stadium for the first time since 1938 and the Red Sox playing their first game in Wrigley since 1918. I like seeing matchups like that. Just a minor point here. The Red Sox had never played in Wrigley Field before. In 1918, Wirgley did not yet have it's upper deck, so in order to accomodate the larger attendance, the CUBS played the series at Comiskey Park. Thanks for the correction Fred. So would it be their first time playing since 1918? BTW, post #1000. 8)
  4. Definately change the All Star Game. I would also ban Barry Bonds from baseball forever. Pete Rose style
  5. I would cancel the season and award the Cubs the World Series.
  6. At least he catches the ball. A throwing problem should be easily fixable.

  8. I can't wait for Farnsworth to blow a couple games. First off, it will probably lead SportsCenter because it's the Yankees. Second, the New York media will be all over him. Third, I can't wait for Steinbrenner to rip into him. It's only a matter of time, you know it's going to happen. why would you want this? if you say it's because farnsworth is "gutless," well, i don't know what i'll do. I think my sig explains enough. And no I don't think he's "gutless."
  9. Then you'd be a bad commisioner. It's great to see more Cubs games vs. great Central teams. Granted, they haven't been all that good lately, but the rivalries that exist with Pit, Cin, StL, and Hou, are all great fun to watch. I understand Hou is a new rival, and even Mil is growing into one, but I'd MUCH rather watch those 5-6 teams duke it out, no matter how bad one is. I don't think I'm alone on that. You can redesign interleague play, but eliminating it would be a mistake. I could care less about the Rays-Brewers Series' but Sox/Yanks, Cards/Royals, Indians/Reds, Nats/O's, Sox/Cubs, Yanks/Dodgers, Giants/Yanks, Giants/A's, Dodgers/A's, Angels/Dodgers Series are great fun to watch, and build/enhance Rivalries. Not sure which Sox you are talking about but whether it's Boston or Chicago, they would play the Yankees without interleague anyway. Maybe you meant Mets/Yanks. I agree with your point though. I think seeing some of those games is entertaining and eliminating interleague play would be the wrong thing to do.

  11. Haha...good one It'll be intersting to see if DLEE is out for a period of time if the Cubs try to get Choi from Boston? If I remember right didn't Choi have a good glove? I hope not. Choi is a bum.
  12. Bingo, that was my gripe last night. Did anyone check Furcal's pocket's for a flask?
  13. But when you consider how much money they are bringing in, it's only fair to them that they have high salaries. Remember that baseball is a business. Nobody comes to the park to see the owners, they come to see the players. I spent several years with a Fortune 100 company as a project manager and could easily quantify how much money I saved or made the company. Many of them over the years were in the millions, and one topped out at $27 million. My salary was $48,000. Baseball players are overpaid. could anyone else have done your job? You beat me to the point Treeman.

  15. At least Jacque is finally hitting over .200.
  16. I'll cut him a little slack, but not very much. First of all, he started the inning and created all of the trouble himself. Second, since when is the sixth inning pressure packed? I know it's a close game, but it's not like Dusty put him in in the eighth to hold the lead. He needs to pitch better in his next outing though. I'm not going to criticize him a lot, but I'm not letting him off the hook yet. And what is it with Cubs pitchers walking everybody?
  17. But jigman (honest question), is Rothschild calling the game from the dugout if it's Maddux, Z or Rusch? couldn't tell you with Rusch. with Maddux, it appears Michael is calling the game this year, but I recall the calls in Maddux games often came from the dugout last year. Z worked mostly with Blanco last year, but Barrett called the game the other night. I do know that last year and the year before, nearly every pitch a bullpen pitcher threw when Barrett was catching came from the dugout. edit: well the pitch didn't literally come from the dugout...you know what I mean I wouldn't be surprised if Maddux called his own games. Or at least worked with Barrett to teach him how to call a game. I'm not sure though. But Maddux is the only pitcher I would trust to call a game.
  18. Okay, I'll be the one to say it first: with all the nail-biting about Lee, Acosta's DEATH puts things into perspective. The pitching staff back then was fun to watch. But I disagree with you on two points: (1) Baylor was IMO more to blame - he got Acosta out of there after 2001 as a desperate move to save his own hide, and (2) I remember Flash flushing away more games than saving. I don't think that year's bullpen was as good as this year's. But I do think that year was much better than the last 2 or 3 years for us. And yes it is an extremely sad day.
  19. I agree. I'm fairly superstitious but I think one needs to be started.
  20. If you just said an MLB team lost their franchise player today on a freak injury and asked which team it was most people would say the Cubs.
  21. huh? :-k Shoot....I forgot my English to English translation book. Fortuantely I have mine. Mark Prior's Calves started the thread. The actual Mark Prior is a star. The actual Mark Prior is also injured. On the random day that Mark Prior's Calves starts a thread our best player and MVP candidate Derrek Lee gets injured. Also on that same random day, one of the best left handed relievers in the league gets injured. Coincidence?
  22. Here are the updated standings through the games on 4-19. ndistops, I fixed my problem with hawkcub, but I checked the other players and the values I had the right players for each of them. I may have just had an incorrect homerun total for a player on my previous list. 55 TruffleShuffle 52 RoastTheD---Goat XZero77 49 J-Shils 48 TrueBlueCubFan sherwood921 ndistops Jazz 47 Mizzou jd6762 Garwilly Serena wade Outshined_One 46 karenmac bukie TheDude soccer10k 45 Rocket Sauce IMB! 23. I think even the division title is still within reach. Lee's injury (if serious) is a disappointing setback, but not a death sentence. Good teams overcome injuries to key players (e.g. the Cardinals last year with Rolen); other players step up. So far this is a good team, and I think they can overcome it. It won't be easy, but it's well within the realm of possibility. Losing Lee isn't the same as losing Rolen. It's like losing Pujols. I highly doubt the Cardinals win 100 games without Pujols in that lineup and with Rolen in. I think they get seriously challenged by the Astros for the division if you gave them Rolen and took out Pujols.
  24. Anyone else find it interesting that somebody the name of an already injured star player in their login name started the game thread during which another one of our star players and another very good player get injured?
  25. As long as Cedeno learns how to throw the ball better he'll be fine. People have been criticizing his defense, but it is just his throwing that's the problem. I don't think that the bullpen will be significantly compromised if Eyre is out for a while because we have other good arms.
