  1. He currently has 108 on the season which puts him on pace for 189 on the year. Dunn holds the record with 195. I think with a little luck, or lack thereof, Dunn can break his own record. Note: This is not intended to be a pro- or anti- Adam Dunn thread but one to watch his rising strikeout totals.
  2. ESPN says he's gotten 1 hit, a double after being down 0-2. He's also hitting .349 in the 6 spot, as opposed to only .260 when batting 7th, and we all know the crazy lefty/righty splits. Another interesting (but small sample size) stat is his .063 BA (1/16) when being up on the count 3-1. Stupid Mets stats! Regardless, his splits are pretty extreme. He has a 189/208/322/530 line when the first pitch of his AB is a strike and is not put in play; when it's a ball, his line is 355/408/618/1026. Basically, he's got twice as good of a chance fo do something productive after a 1-0 count than with an 0-1 count. His numbers when putting the first pitch in play are spectacular, too: 23-39 with 4 HRs, with a line of 590/590/1026/1616. So, when he swings at the first pitch and puts it in play, he's in great shape, but if he misses it or fouls it off, he's screwed. Wow on all of Jacque's splits but especially the bolded part. 1.616 OPS. Wow.
  3. Every so often when my dad is bugging me about the Cubs I'll ask him who the Dodgers got in return for Pedro Martinez. He just shakes his head every time. Not quite the same as 97 years of futility but it usually shuts him up.
  4. 1. Z actually stole second base? Wow. That has to be a highlight of the year. Anybody know if there is video of this somewhere? 2. I make it a point to try to watch all of Z's starts because of how well he is pitching right now. 3. If Z would have got a 2-3 wins in April, he would be at the head of the Cy Young race this year. With 2 wins he's tied for the NL lead and with 3 he has the lead. He also has the seventh best ERA in the NL. Even still, he is on the short list with Glavine, Penny, Webb, and Arroyo. Note: I realize that wins aren't a good stat for realistically evaluating pitchers but in the Cy Young voting that is the #1 criteria that is used which is why I brought that stat up.
  5. If you bring up Bartman in your speech w/o laying the vast majority of the blame on Gonzalez, I will be very, very upset. Agreed. I don't blame Bartman much anymore. Let's just say that hypothetically, Alou doesn't make the catch and nobody interferes. Gonzalez is lucky that Bartman pulled his little incident or he would be known as the guy who killed the Cubs in 2003.
  6. Yes. Playoff appearances since WWII: Red Sox: 1946 1967 1975 1986 1988 1990 1995 1998 1999 2003 2004 2005 Cubs: 1945 1984 1989 1998 2003 I'll gladly take the Red Sox "suffering." Heartbreaks for the Red Sox like 1986 and 2003 are preceded by full seasons of success. World Series Appearances since WWII Red Sox: 1946 1967 1975 1986 2004 Cubs: 1945
  7. Yes. As if 1969, 1984, 1989, 2003 were any easier to take than the ball going thru Buckner's legs?? IMO that was the worst, b/c the Red Sox were 1 strike away. Yeah, the Sox choked often, but really, who in their right mind ever thought of them as a "bad team?" The Red Sox regularly made the playoffs and went to the WS a number of times...they just couldn't seal the deal. But they were still respected as a good and often great team at the end of the day, season after season. The Cubs, on the other hand, have had some flukey good seasons, and that's it. They're not respected at all. They have had respected players...they have a respected stadium. Hell, the scoreboard is more respected than the team itself. The team is a joke, year in and year out, with a few exceptions here or there...not that those exceptions matter, since they faithfully enforce the joke the next year, without fail. Cubs are known as the Lovable Losers. Red Sox were known as the team that couldn't beat the Yankees.
  8. Not exactly a new theory.
  9. I thought there's no way the Sox don't win the division... I'm not a full fledged believer yet but I'm running out of reasons to doubt Detroit. Would a Tigers sweep of the White Sox this week do it?? If the Tigers sweep the White Sox it will make me a believer that the Tigers can win the AL Central. And not just because the Tigers will be 7.5 up on the White Sox after the series. If the Tigers take 2 out of 3 then they're just doing what they are supposed to. I am still waiting for a slump and I still think the White Sox will win the division.
  10. The Red Sox are my favorite AL team, and I am spending more time supporting Red Sox Nation. So you've been rooting for the White Sox to beat the Yankees this weekend? I have to. The Red Sox will pull thru and win the division. Wow, the White Sox basher pulling FOR the White Sox. Anarchy will now ensue.
  11. I'm sure Todd heard the clock ticking before the season started.
  12. I don't see Jones being traded before the trade deadline in 2007.
  13. Alex Sanchez career: .296/.330/.372 Is Alex Sanchez a class A FA? No. Does Juan Pierre's last 2 years compare with Sanchez? No. The only 2 things Pierre has on Sanchez is AB and a clean bill of health. That teams are dumb enough to continue hitting such a poor hitting hitter at the top of the order does not make him a class A free agent. If the Cubs want to fill CF next year, they could get the same or better effects by trading for Sanchez. No thanks. The Cubs have somewhat identical options in their own minor leagues if they want a fast, low OBP lead off hitter who will make really fast outs. I don't want to keep Pierre. Please don't mistake my post for a desire to keep Pierre. In fact, I'd personally try to deal him prior to July 31. On the other hand, if he's still on the team, I think the Cubs have to risk the arbitration offer. If he's had a half-way decent second half, I think he'll reject the offer in favor of negotiating a multi-year deal which will help the Cubs recoup a draft pick that will likely be spent when we sign a FA of our own. Agreed. I believe that some team will offer Pierre a multi year deal. Not sure who that is, but I don't see Pierre signing a one year deal especially if he continues to improve.
  14. But as was stated, there are so many teams that still have a shot to make the postseason which means few teams will be willing to trade big league players. There will be some trades, and there have been a couple already, and it's unlikely that this years deadline will be as dead as last years, but I don't think there will be a ton of trades. Soriano will get traded but I think Willis stays in Florida.
  15. I don't think that will be a problem.
  16. That Italian team are World Cup champs. I don't think anything else matters to them. That seems to be apparent, considering the way they went about doing it. Yeah, their defense was stellar throughout the whole tournament.
  17. You make a valid point but I think Zito's going to get at least $12 mil a year on his deal and could be up to $15 mil a year. His agent is Boras now and the Yankees and Red Sox will be going after him. Forget it. Yeah, the only way the Cubs get him is if he really wants to come to Chicago and will take a $2-3 less mil a year to come here. So like CBB said, forget it. For that matter, I think we can forget about Jason Schmidt too especially if the Giants want to keep him, which I think they do. San Francisco has a TON of money coming off the books this year and will probably have over $30 mil to spend. If they want Schmidt in a Giants uniform in 2007, they'll have him in one.
  18. You make a valid point but I think Zito's going to get at least $12 mil a year on his deal and could be up to $15 mil a year.
  19. Yeah. I should have said that Jones has a right to be angry. If he wants to rip the fans, he should do it though to press and not start an argument with a fan while on the field. He could have strongly voiced his opinion that the fans weren't treating him well and that he wasn't pleased with it. In that case, Jones has a right to be mad for being booed while somebody like Neifi or Glendon doesn't because they're having horrible years.
  20. yeah, that 2005 era of 4.51 is a spitting image of this year's 3.47. I think he was talking about personel... Still may not be true, just pointing that out. Justin Verlander and Joel Zumaya have gone a long way in helping this club out. Ditto Chris Shelton coming out of nowhere at the beginning of the year. We'll see how they do down the stretch. Some of these guys have never played this many games before in a season. I'm waiting for the Tigers to go into a bit of a slump. I think the White Sox will end up winning the division and the Tigers the Wild Card but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Tigers missed the playoffs altogether. Don't think the latter will happen but it is a possibility.
