  1. Like Vance said, the thing that makes the deal horrible what Izturis is owed next year. I would have been content with anybody owed less than $1 million next year. Obviously this was a seller's market and Maddux isn't a great pitcher anymore so we weren't going to get top prospects in return for him. But trading for somebody that is owed $4.5 million next year doesn't help the team be successful. This means that the Cubs will have almost $10 million wrapped up in Neifi Perez, Glendon Rusch, and Cesar Izturis next year.
  2. This is absolutely depressing. Why not take the prospects? UGH.
  3. I don't think there was any way we could have acquired Abreu because I doubt he wanted to come play for this disaster we call the 2006 Cubs.
  4. Izturis 2004 is basically Juan Pierre 2006 except with more strikeouts and less stolen bases.
  5. I'm not sure what's more surprising: the Cubs actually winning four straight games or the fact that the Cubs are not the last team in the majors to achieve a four game winning streak in 2006. Baltimore is the only team that has yet to have a 4 game winning streak this year.
  6. Z pitching decently against the second best team in the NL coupled with Carpenter struggling against the lowly Cubs should vault Z ahead of Carp in the NL Cy standings. Hopefully the Cubs can help Z out more by hitting Webb hard tomorrow.
  7. 6 out of 7 against the top 2 teams in the NL is amazing.
  8. I'll tune in to see how Prior is doing when I get off of work.
  9. Acquiring Soriano would definately go against what everybody thought the Marlins were trying to do this year and would increase their payroll by about 66%.
  10. *raises hand* I was stoked when the Cubs acquired Barrett. I knew he wasn't a .208 hitter like he was in 2003 and I never dreamed he would be a .330 hitter either but I figured he would be a solid hitting catcher for the Cubs.
  11. Beltre got his contract because of one monster year which was better than anything ARam has come close to doing. ARam has had a better career than Beltre, but Beltre had one MVP-type year and parlayed it into a huge contract.
  12. Not really anything one can do about it. A few years ago Sidney Ponson was traded from the Orioles to the Giants because he would be an FA at the end of the season. Everone knew he'd re-sign with the Orioles the next winter - and he did. That may be, but Fat Boy Ponson did not have a deal lined up. He simply decided he'd come back over the winter. Having your mind set on it is one thing, having a pre-arranged deal is another How do you know he didn't have a deal lined up? Ponson could have said all the right things to the media and then "decided" to resign with the Orioles. Not saying that he did have a deal in place, but you don't know whether he did or not.
  13. Fixed. As has been discussed on this board, don't rule out ARam opting out solely because he wants more money.
  14. I agree that I don't think Abreu would have agreed to come to Chicago.
  15. Ohman, if you're going to walk Pujols, please plunk him.
  16. Z is a switch hitter as well so you could pinch hit him in any situation.
  17. He'll be 26 on September 7.
  18. He's on pace for 50/151 for the year along with a 1.000+ OPS. I really wanted the Cubs to trade for him in 2004 and try to sign him after that season and was extremely disappointed when they didn't. Even with his down year last year I figured he would bounce back. I didn't think he would put up numbers like he is doing this year though. Make that 32 and 94 on the year.
  19. how do we figure out what type he would be and what each type fetches? even if a type B they get a sandwich pick, no? Probably all a moot point because in order for the Cubs to get picks, they would have to offer Walker arbitration after this season, possibly putting the Cubs in a position to bring him back next season (assuming of course so one else signs him). I'm not so sure the Cubs would be willing to do that. For what ever reason, it seems like Hendry had been looking to trade him ever since he picked up his option before this season started, but just couldn't get a deal he wanted. Actually, I think that's a gamble the Cubs might take because Walker doesn't seem too keen on staying with the Cubs either. At this point, it's probably going to be worth more to keep him, offer him arbitration (if you have to, do what Tim always says - tell him you'll make him a bench player if he accepts) and get extra picks. As a Type B, the Cubs could get a 2nd or 3rd round pick. That's probably going to be worth more than any prospect(s) the Cubs can get for Walker now. I would think that Walker returning would hinge on whether or not Dusty returns to the team next year.
  20. Hendry is probably on the phone right now asking MLB if they can schedule 40-50 games against the Cards next year.
