Who do you put in CF then? When Murton was up Floyd outproduced him. The problem isn't whether Murton is ready or not, it's the fact that he has nowhere to play and he's better off playing everyday at AAA then sporadically at the ML level.

There is no doubt in my mind that Frank Thomas is a HOFer and should get in on the firs ballot. It's not so much about whether his size changed or not but rather his consistency as a hitter. Right off the bat he was a very good hitter. He had a 1.006 OPS in his first full season.

I kind of think that reporters are idiots and don't have a clue about much of anything. I dont disagree when it comes to general baseball knowledge. What I am saying is they are closer to the individuals than we are. They probably have a better idea what players are doing. This is why Ripken was always reported as being a great guy and Eddie Murray as being a wanker. I also think they kind of know who is doing and who isnt. This is why I think some players get the rep and some dont. Eddie Murray was reported as a wanker because he wouldn't give the reporters good copy. Ripken would. Reporters are kind to the guys that are kind to them and unkind to those that don't give them a story. Offense has (jokingly) been taken to your first post. :wink: As for your second post, you hit it right on the head. If you are nice to a reporter, they're more likely to write good things about you or turn a potentially negative story into a positive. But if you're a dick, they aren't going to do you any favors. It's human nature.

willingness to give the kids a chance, plus the awareness that sometimes pitchers get tired and should be removed from the game (starters) or given a day off (relievers), are the two things I like most about Lou. Or I guess I should say, like about Lou over Dusty Baker. Not to mention that if you expect your reliever to be effective that they should sit on the bench for a week in between outings (obviously 2007 Eyre is an exception here). I remember when Dusty gave Guzman two outings in a week and a half at one point last year and he was just sitting in the pen.

I agree. Maybe nothing has changed from last year and he's really a AAAA player, but I think he's earned 1 more chance (and I don't mean a handful of sporadic ABs or a "if you suck for 2 weeks, you're out" chance). I mean call him up and given him the starting job basically every day for 1-2 months. If he's terrible, you know what you have (nothing). If he's average, you know that you have a cheap SS that won't kill you. If he's good - that's one less hole we have to fill. I guess part of the reason I'd like to do that now, rather than wait for DeRosa and/or Fontenot to cool down a lot, is if he's up now we can get a month of ABs before the trade deadline. If the Cubs can get on a little hot streak and have a shot at the WC by 7/31, I'd like to know if we should look to add a SS or whether we can live with Ronny. If we wait 2-3 more weeks, we will know no more at the trade deadline about our SS position than we do now (I don't think Fontenot is the answer there - if he can be a 2B, great, but I'd prefer to give the SS role to Ronny from a defensive standpoint). I learned my lesson with Rich Hill last year. Obviously they aren't the same player and Ronny got way more time (a full year as compared to a handful of starts) at the ML level but both tore up AAA. Hopefully if Ronny gets called up he can tear up the majors like Hill did.

He lashed that one today... well, yesterday... into the stands. Frank Thomas did, Sheffield still in the 470s. He's another tweener between this year and next... probably next. Sheff's needs 45 HR's this year IIRC to get 500. He's got 18 right now which would mean he needs 27 in the second half of the year which I don't see him getting. He'll finish with about 490 (assuming he doesn't get hurt this year) and get to 500 early next year.
