  2. He was on normal rest on Sunday, he’ll be on normal rest tomorrow and he’ll be on normal rest if he has to pitch in a Game 5. It literally changes nothing for them. Plus it kept him on his normal routine and meant he didn’t have 9 days (or whatever it would be) between starts. I thought rest between Game 2 and Game 5 in the DS was short rest always? Somewhere between 2005 and 2010 they changed it. 04 there was a 3-2 series where they played 3-4-5 on consecutive days. 2005 had one also but there was rain between 3 and 4 so I’m not sure. There wasn’t another 3-2 series until 2010. There was a day off before Game 5 in Tampa so rain couldn’t have affected that one.

  4. The Twins won 101 games this year and it’s possible that they could make the World Series and not have home field advantage in any of the three series.
  5. or, conversely, real rally My bad, I was used to watching the Cubs all year.
  6. Solid fake rally by the Nats here.
  7. Right, because, shocker, they DO value things like optics/PR with moves like this. Maddon is widely liked by the fanbase because of the WS, hence why they didn't actually fire him and are trying to ride this out as smoothly as possible. Simply signing his backup doesn't work for both the people mad to see Joe gone ("If they're just going to promote the bench coach, then why not keep Joe?!?!" etc.), and not for most of the people who were also looking for the Cubs to move on and try something different. It's a lose/lose proposition PR-wise that makes almost nobody happy except the FO and a tiny, tiny, tiny sliver of fans that would be creepily pumped over Loretta managing the Cubs. I'm pretty sure less than 10% of the population realizes Loretta was the bench coach, so the PR thing won't really come into play. I had no idea until a week ago when the gambling odds on who the next manager would be came out and I had to google him to find out where he was coaching this year.
  8. Why? If they win this one they go directly to the DS and Flaherty can still pitch twice in that series if it goes 5. He’s on normal rest also. Facing Holland, Brewers still need to win, just throw someone else out there and save Flaherty for a 163 or WC game potentially. But likely get to use him game 1 of the DS. Also if he went game 2 and 5 he’d be on short rest for game 5. He'd be on normal rest for Game 5. Thu: Game 1 Fri: Game 2 Sat: Off Sun: Game 3 Mon: Game 4 Tue: Off Wed: Game 5 By pitching him tomorrow it allows them to pitch him twice in the DS. If he goes Game 163 or the WC game, he'd only pitch once in the DS since he wouldn't be available until Game 3.
  9. I know it’s only been a few games but boy am I sure glad that Pulisic went to Chelsea.
  10. Why? If they win this one they go directly to the DS and Flaherty can still pitch twice in that series if it goes 5. He’s on normal rest also.
  11. As for the DS, Flaherty starting Game 1 or 2 doesn’t really matter. Unless they were going to bring him back on short rest in Game 4, he’ll pitch twice regardless.
  12. I mean, what do the Brewers expect? KB, Rizzo and Javy are all hurt so I’d course they’re not going to play.
  13. I want them to do whatever needs to be done to make St Louis and Milwaukee have a game 163 on Monday (so win at least one of the three in St Louis). That would make them travel more and play an extra game. Would also make the Cardinals use Flaherty which means he’d either be unavailable for the WC game if they lose or unavailable until Game 3 of the NLDS if they win. Cards cost us the division last year by getting swept by Milwaukee at home and then winning one against us in the last week. The least we can do is repay the favor.
  14. The Giants used 13 pitchers in a game, which tied a record held by them a week ago and the Rockies. Arizona also used 13 pitchers yesterday. The Giants and Rockies combined to use 25 pitchers in the game which is a new record.
  15. Lucky for Flaherty that he didn’t get drafted into our development system There’s an alternate universe where Jake Stinnet is pitching great for the Cards this year and Flaherty is stuck in High A right now.
  16. Bruce Bochy special in progress! Bumgarner goes the first 7 innings and Bochy then uses 8 relievers to get through the next 4 innings. He's brought in a 9th reliever for the 12th inning. For comparison, in the same game, Colorado has used 7 relievers to pitch 7 2/3 innings.
  17. My main issue (in all sports) is how long some of these reviews take. I know we’ve discussed it countless times in game threads. Cap it to 60 seconds and if you can’t tell, you go with the call on the field/court. In this case, 60 seconds and if you can’t tell if he’s offsides, then the goal stands. Like I said about this specific one, I’m also dubious as to VAR’s ability to factor in exactly when the ball was kicked, where the attacker was and where the defender was. Maybe they can tell. I’m just not 100% sure. Related note, when they review for offsides, is it when the ball is initially touched or when it leaves the foot? I honestly have no idea but if we’re trying to determine offsides down to the millimeter, this is relevant.
  18. Fangraphs and 538 give us a 2% chance to make the playoffs.
  19. Jorge Soler had 38 homers in 1132 PA's coming into the year. Jorge Soler has 45 homers in 659 PA's this year.
  20. Oh look, three games the Cubs actually have a chance to win!
  21. 97, 103, 92, 95 wins. I’d say that’s a pretty damn good run. EDIT: Most wins in the majors in that span. 1 of only 2 teams to win 90+ all four years (Dodgers) and only the Red Sox and Indians won 90+ in 3 of the 4 seasons. where did the cubs win total from 2012-2014 rank? those seasons count too. Now you’re moving the goalposts.
  22. So the culture of the last five years is gone, replaced by a 5 game stretch? This is miserable/morbidly entertaining, but get the horsefeathers out of here with this big picture meatball stuff. the last 5 years have been good? I see 3 good to great years sandwiched in between 5 years of dog horsefeathers.
  23. But I was told there was no chance this game was going to get played. What happened to Bryant? EDIT: That doesn’t look good.
