  1. Yea. We have a little more money to blow. Denver is responsible for his whole signing bonus.
  2. There's no stat debate. It's not about gut feelings. Do you see what I'm saying here? I'm not arguing with you about the fact that the possibility exists that the Cubs could lose and the Cardinals could beat us out for the division. I agree with you on that. It's a fact. They could. That says nothing, however, about which team is better. The Cardinals are not better than the Cubs. That's blatantly obvious.
  3. alright, you want to talk stats wise, or do you want to talk actual team wise performance...? stats wise...yes...the cubs have the best rotation and best lineup... however...if harden should go down...it wouldn't shock me to see the cubs falter...and i think it takes away any advantage we currently have in the division... this team has some serious question marks right now 2nd base...question mark center field...question mark right field...high potential question mark short stop...can he do it again? 1st base...will he get locked into his head again? harden...how many times does he step on the mound? patton...? vizciano...? Instead of presenting all the what ifs (we all know what they are), try defending your argument that the Cardinals are better than the Cubs (or that the Cardinals have a better rotation than the Cubs do without Harden). Yes, the Cardinals COULD outperform the Cubs. There's a decently significant chance of it (not nearly as good a chance as vice-versa, though). That doesn't change the fact that going into the season, the Cubs have the best team and best chance of winning it. What is your argument for the bolded above?
  4. do you REALLY think the cardinals are anywhere near as good as the Cubs? Really??? I think the baseball season is a long & winding road. I think it's April. And I think the hubris about the Cubs is fun & cool, but given the two other factors above doesn't really mean anything. The Cubs are the best team in the NL Central. That doesn't mean they are guaranteed to perform the best. Nor does that mean that the team that may wind up outperforming them is better. People should be able to separate these ideas. Flukes can even happen even in 162 game seasons. Nobody saying that the Cubs are the best team in the division is denying that. The argument isn't that there's no way that the Cubs won't win the division in 2009. It's that the Cubs have far and away the best team in the NL Central in 2009.
  5. Anyone can surprise. What you (anabiono) said is the Cardinals either have a better lineup than the Cubs or have a better rotation than the Cubs (sans Harden)
  6. If you had said the Reds, I'd be more willing to listen.
  7. you're saying they have a better starting lineup than the cubs? or that their rotation is better than the cubs' minus harden? one is slightly less laughable than the other. Does it matter? Both statements are wrong. Brendon Ryan is their leadoff guy today with Khalil Greene hitting freaking cleanup. Like I said... both are a joke. The lineup one is about 10x worse, though.

  10. I need that SlingPlayer app to come out for iPhone already. That will be key.
  11. Harden looked good in his starts before the simulated one too. And Bruce was the one who reported to us (don't know if he saw it first hand or not) that Harden was in the mid-90s. I tend to trust him. It's not that big of a leap to think, given his innings load (or lack thereof) this spring and his history and the history of pitchers in general that he was going through typical dead arm stuff that pitchers go through around this time of year (well, usually a little earlier). Lilly has sucked lately too and started last year throwing in the low 80's. It's not that uncommon. I'm not saying there's nothing to be concerned about. I'm just saying it's not worth reacting much to until we see what happens in the next few weeks.
  12. lol... screamin A I'm so conflicted right now... I can't wait for the season to start but there's little I hate more than fall/winter. Part of me wants to skip forward and, with summer around the corner, part of me never wants to get there.
  13. Not really. The Cubs are massive favorites for a reason. What's the deal with people who worry about/warn against fans getting ahead of themselves and taking things for granted, anyway? We're not the players. We don't affect the outcome.
  14. Didn't we get enough this with Prior/Wood in '04 and '05? I'm not sure what this even means. So we shouldn't have an extremely high upside guy who is an injury risk in our rotation because we've had pitchers who have gotten hurt a lot before (a lot of teams have histories like this, as pitchers tend to get hurt a lot)? As you noted, we're not even relying on him that much.
  15. Harden had starts last year where he was mostly in the upper 80's. I don't know why some of you guys are so surprised at this. Concern is understandable, but his velocity was up and down last year, even more so toward the end of the season. Not more than 2-3 weeks ago Bruce reported that he was averaging 93 in his simulated outing. This weekend could've just been a dead arm start.

  17. That said, I wouldn't be in favor of a new park in the suburbs or something. A lakefront park would be the coolest thing ever IMO but it wouldn't work due to weather and crap. We have this conversation every year.
  18. Very good to hear. Let's hope it sticks or improves.
  19. nice touch on the shirt/tie combo
