  1. I refuse to say they will or can't be better overall or on defense because the NFL is insanely unpredictable from year to year. Obviously, going into 06 the defense looked a lot better. By the same token, though, our offense was supposed to be trash going into the 06 season and people were trashing the Hester pick left and right ("He's not an NFL corner or WR, why waste a pick on a return specialist"). That said, if I had to guess, I think the offense should be much better. I should add the disclaimer that I'm talking beyond just points scored.
  2. Take it FWIW, which isn't all that much, but a little while ago, Mulligan said he's never seen a better Bears team overall than the one he's seen in OTAs so far. I'm going to just assume he's only covered the Bears since the mid 90's or so, which would still make it a pretty good compliment.
  3. This is true. The line obviously has to improve for any of this to matter. Hopefully, Marinelli can get improvement/resurgence out of Tommie and maybe Anderson and maybe Gilbert can make an impact.
  4. As for the bolded, definitely. It's a June fluff piece. But it's not just about the time on the field. It's the situations. Yea, a quick TD puts the defense right back on the field. But leads also = putting the opposing offense in passing situations. Bigger leads (obviously) do this even more so. Whenever we'd build those leads, we'd tee off later in games and get flurries of sacks/picks. That's our specialty. Pressuring the QB and getting turnovers. It's much easier to do that when you know what the other team has to do. This is all pretty obvious, though. Can the season start already?
  5. http://espn.go.com/chicago/story?columnist=bonkowski_jerry&id=4250022 Fun to read fluff piece. Also, I don't think this gets talked about enough... This defense was extra dominant in 06 when we scored a lot of points early in games. When we had leads, we had the chance to really pressure the QB and get big plays like picks and sacks. Our defense isn't ideal for a grind it out type game where we try to run the ball a lot, play conservative on offense and win 10-7 or whatever. It's at its best when the offense and ST give it a cushion and give it a chance to play riskier. Then, when we have those leads, we can grind it out on offense and run down the clock more. Just my .02.
  6. I think it's got more to do with the way he left Denver than his W/L record. But anyway, I'd take Cutler over Rodgers every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
  7. Good to hear.
  8. I don't think they just conclude these things (I say they because Zaidman reported something similar last week) based on what they observe on the actual field in practices in terms of quality of play. It's not like they are experts. Most likely they're basing this on things they're told by players, coaches, etc. They're (Zach Z and Dickerson) around those people a lot.
  9. Hell, I'll toss in this one too, for those too lazy to click.
  10. http://espn.go.com/chicago/columns/blog?post=4246249&name=dickerson Let's not forget that JA pegged Steltz as being the closest to being able to start among last year's draft picks. Just a little more info on the safety situation. There's some notes on other players in that blog entry, but I didn't want to post the whole thing.
  11. Yea, and him... can't remember his name.
  12. Willie McGee begs to differ.
  13. I do agree it makes sense in certain aspects, but what those Cubs fans who can't get the prosposed Cubs channel? Would that mean we're SOL every yr? If it wasn't for Cubs games, Scrubs reruns and Corner Gas, I have no use for WGN. Take the Cubs off WGN and I prolly won't watch WGN all that much. I'd take 50 Cub games a yr on WGN over none on a new network. That's the Tribune's problem. Not the Cubs'.
  14. This might shed some light on what we were discussing earlier...
  15. So we're going to quibble over whether or not he had an ear infection? I just read several articles which stated he did indeed have an ear infection, which caused problems with his equilibrium. But you must understand it better than most of the reporters did. How are we quibbling over that? I never said he didn't have an infection.
  16. I'm not sure about that yet because Owings looked like he had pretty good stuff and he wasn't missing the strike zone by a lot. The Cubs didn't really have a good swing against him in the 1st. If he gets locked in with throwing strikes, it could be problematic. Of course, the 1st inning will also make him tired faster which is where the team might be able to take advantage of him. That's what I meant. Plus, he's not all that good to begin with.
  17. The "official" reasons for DL stints are often very vague. And it wasn't for an ear infection. He was having just random dizziness problems that they couldn't figure out the reason for. Then they figured out that he had an ear infection and gave him meds. As I understand it, the ear infection cleared up and the dizziness didn't.
  18. He has had continued dizziness. They thought it might just be an ear infection but he was still dizzy after the infection cleared up so they DL'd him to be safe. Is that your personal opinion, because I just searched him in google news and they say it is stress. No, that's not his opinion. That's what happened. How could that even be his opinion?
  19. We should score some runs this game. Made Owings work quite a bit early.
  20. When it wound up being bases loaded 2 out with Fontenot, Hill, and Blanco coming up, yes.
  21. So, apparently, Plax's attorney (same guy that got Diddy off years ago) is working hard at either getting a plea deal done or, if it goes to trial, getting it pushed back till after the season. He says he'll know more on Monday. Obviously, even if he gets in the clear legally, the NFL could still decide to suspend him. As much as I want to prove that our receivers will be good enough with Cutler throwing to them, I really want them to get this done. Plax's absurd ability to make catches + Cutler throwing to him just seems too amazing, as does getting the defense's attention off Hester.
  22. Beautiful pass from Rex to Clark there.
  23. Even Moss was basically invisible with a horrible enough offense around him.
  24. Actually, I'm pretty sure we let Graham go after 95 (his and Kramer's big year) and Kramer got hurt the following year. He was decent but nothing special for a few years after that.
