  1. Were people expecting (or even hoping for) him to come into this game and dominate at 95 mph? All I wanted to see was improvement, and that first inning he pitched was definitely better than his last outing. His velocity and location both are better than last time. He's still topping off at 88-89, but he's working more consistently in the 87-88 range than the 85 or so we heard last time. Let's see how this next inning goes.
  2. Attack the post and not the poster, please. looool
  3. Yes. That's the whole "feel good story" portion of this. ohh...I'm not really feeling it. To me he is just another idiot who had the world at his figertips but couldn't lay off the nose candy. Can't say I disagree at all. Still, it'd be nice to see if he can actually make the best out of a second chance, since most usually never do.
  4. Yes. That's the whole "feel good story" portion of this.
  5. Looks better without, IMO. Actually, looks really good without. The big text just looks out of place.
  6. http://pressbox.mlb.com/pressbox/statistics/stats_06.jsp?content=chc_st06 Thanks, davhern. So keeping in mind that this isn't anything concrete and only just our first bit of available statistical information on the subject... Last spring the Cubs struckout 166 times and walked 87 through 31 games, about a 2:1 ratio. Through 10 games this spring, they have struckout 50 times and walked 38. So the early indications are good. Meaningless, but good. Although the samples are meaningless, I wouldn't approach the analysis that way. I wouldn't include strikeouts at all. 87 walks in 31 games = 2.81 BB/G 38 walks in 10 games = 3.80 BB/G A somewhat significant improvement, if not a significant sample size. Just for kicks, in 2006 over the regular season, the Cubs had 395 BB in 162 games, which comes out to 2.43 BB/G.. If the Cubs actually were to sustain their spring training walk rate (which I wouldn't count on, at all), they'd walk about 616 times over 162 games, which would've been good for 2nd in the NL last year, just behind Philly's 626 and just ahead of Cincy's 614. Again, though, take ST numbers with less than a grain of salt. I just figured it out for fun.
  7. He's growing that creepy cork-era goatee again. I'm convinced that that thing was the cause of his lost ability to hit the low and outside pitch.

  9. Would Izturis (last year of contract), Cedeno (or Theriot), Jacque (to get rid of some salary), Guzman, and get it done for Tejada?   Soriano Tejada Lee Ramirez Floyd/Pie Barrett Murton DeRosa Thats an awful trade. You're giving up 2 middling level middle infielders, a mediocre outfielder, a middling pitching prospect and another pitching prospect for a bona-fide star? What? How did that make sense in your head? First, a pitching prospect who throws 95 mph with command and nasty breaking pitches like Gooz is more than just "middling." Second, bona-fide stars get traded for crap packages around a couple of prospects all the time. They're called salary dumps. Now, whether or not Baltimore would do such a deal is definitely in question, but the point stands.
  10. Did Hamilton ever actually play for Lou? That might've had something to do with them not being interested in him for our purposes.

  12. Except they offer no speed or defense and combine to block two of our best prospects. How exactly is Ward blocking anyone? Care to respond to my statements about what they actually CAN do? You know, something that has been definitively proven rather than merely hoped for? Well, Ward is blocking Cliff Floyd's spot on the bench for one...and looking at these guys' recent history I don't see them as any more proven than top AAA talent. They wouldn't be hanging on if it weren't for experience. Ward's recent production shows he was one of the best pinch hitters in the Major Leagues. [sarcasm] Yea, but we need speed and defense, man. [/sarcasm]
  13. Dang, I should probably be more clear with the sarcasm. Now that I read it, it definitely isn't that easy to tell. My bad. I think Sarcastic made a good point and it didn't get much attention. Prior definitely did throw the two seamer in the low 90's. Not 89, but 91-92, usually. It was his 4-seamer that he would hit the mid 90's with.
  14. I don't feel like reading all the new posts, so maybe someone has already mentioned this, but maybe he was throwing the two seamer (which he generally threw low 90's) at 85-86 and he was throwing the four seamer (which he threw in the mid 90's) when he hit 89. Would seem to make sense.
  15. Looks like the wrist straps may or may not say "Soriano," also.
  16. There should really never be another Cub referred to by this name.
  17. He did have a pretty nice rebound in 96, though.
  18. I've made that comparison many times over the past few seasons. Great, now I'm confused all over again.
  19. Angel? Whoops....Freudian slip! Angel Guzman. Yes....Angel, that's the man. Ahh, too early in the morning for me. I should've realized that. Here I was Googling Juan Guzman to see if there were any stories of him recovering lost velocity or something.
  20. If they did, Woody was nearing 100.
  21. Aren't the apostrophes in "Matthews'" being used incorrectly? I thought it was only on a plural posessive that you didn't include an 's' at the end, but when the subject actually ends in an 's,' you do. Have I been wrong all these years? i.e. The boys' bags were lost. (plural subject) vs. Gary Matthews's contract is a joke. (singular subject that ends in 's') EDIT - I've looked it up, and, apparently, informally, people generally don't use the extra 's' if it's awkward in conversation/pronunciation. I don't like that answer. I want the formal rules, damnit!
