  1. Because Major League baseball teams can obviously will their ways to victory.
  2. You answered your question with that first concession. Cub management seems to have an affinity for guys whose OBPs are very BA heavy... Add that to the fact that the team is collectively not hitting for much power (for whatever reason), and there's your explanation. It certainly doesn't have much to do with luck. I'm pretty sure the Cubs have happened to hit for a pretty high average with RISP this year.
  3. To be fair, the Red Sox (in particular) and Yanks are much better teams. But I suppose this battle of mediocrity in the Central should be more exciting with the closeness of the race.
  4. I was hoping we'd hear something, seeing as how he's been with the team for this AZ series. I really hope he isn't non-tendered this offseason. Anyway, here's a link and a few quotes. Sounds like he's doing well. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-070825cubsbits,1,803980.story?coll=cs-home-headlines
  5. Same guy. EDIT - Whoops. That's what I get for not refreshing.
  6. I remember a video montage that (I believe) WGN did to that song after the Cubs clinched in 2003.
  7. At least it's not Chad Kroeger.
  8. This gets quoted a million times with no proof or evidence. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=3766 http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/constructing-lineups/ if you read that of bp you'll notice that power hitters should not lead off  Case in point: Sori should bat fifth with Riot leading off. The point isn't that there's no difference; it's that the difference between optimal and non-optimal lineups is almost completely insignificant and not worth worrying about.
  9. This gets quoted a million times with no proof or evidence. Bill James Link #-o I don't have a link. I read the books. Essentially, lineup order has a minimal effect on the total runs a lineup would score. The main concern, obviously, is having the right people in the lineup. Where they are positioned doesn't mean that much. Logically, you would want your better hitters toward the top of the order (and your worst hitters at the bottom) because the hitters at the top inevitably will get the most at bats, but over the course of the season, the order means little in terms of traditional ideas regarding lineup construction (i.e. having a "leadoff" guy, a "number 2" hitter, etc.).

  11. This move is a surprise to you? All in all, it doesn't really matter. Lineup order is almost entirely irrelevant (barring extreme examples).
  12. Funny. I'm an advocate of a new stadium (as it becomes more and more necessary), but wouldn't really want a retractable roof at all.
  13. I love Theriot and all, but that lineup would be better off with DeRo at 2B and even an average producing RF. Maybe long term, you'd rather have Theriot at 2B than DeRo, but yea. DeRo at 2B and average RF > Theriot at 2B and DeRo in RF That lineup is a wet dream though, either way, with ARod at SS. I'll take it every day of the week.
  14. LOL.. just spotted this guy 10 runs on MLB and won 16-11.
  15. Thats kind of hard to do with the current state of affairs. True. Playing Murton more would at least help, though. Hopefully, he can perform now that he's going to have more opportunities and have RF locked up when Sori comes back.
  16. This debate is pointless, anyway. Lineup order is almost irrelevant (barring absurdly extreme cases, i.e. batting your worst hitters first and best hitters last). What we need is more good hitters.
  17. Yea... switching a couple guys' spots in the order isn't going to take a mediocre lineup and turn it into a dominant one.
  18. 2/8?? Sorry, I'm a moron. It's early in the morning. He was 2/8 before the 0/16, not after, duh.
  19. So you're saying he's 2 for his last 8? Well, that's a lot better than 2/22....sample size be damned.
  20. Hilarious timing with what Len and Bob were saying.
  21. No, he's busy being the hitting coach for the nationals. Seriously. Dear lord, who thought of hiring him as a hitting coach? dude's the all-time leader in pinch hits! All-time. And why was he pinch hitting so often? Because he wasn't good enough to be a starter. EB was definitely just joking right there.
  22.
  23. You want Prior to come back as a AAAA power hitting corner OFer?
