  1. OH YAY!! does that run mean the season's not over anymore?
  2. This thread is the perfect mix of hilarious and embarrassing.
  3. That very well may be the reason but plenty of spanish speaking guys joke around and seem to have fun all the time. Papi and Manny immediately come to mind. Papi and Manny are huge stars who always have the spotlight on them. Ronny is a backup SS who is never going to be the guy the media goes to for a soundbite. And is Theriot really a guy who jokes around and seems to have fun all the time? He's not the first guy that comes to mind when you think of the Cubs' resident pranksters/comedians, or the best guy to go to for an interview. But it's definitely a prevalent illusion surrounding Theriot, adding to his long list of "intangibles." Luckily, this year, he has done enough to please both the intangible-loving crowd, while being very productive and providing real value to the team, rather than just the "intangible" "little things" qualities that are ascribed to guys like him. As long as he keeps hitting and getting on base, I don't care what mythological attributes are assigned to him, be it resident comedian, lover of all things baseball, or spokesperson of the team.
  4. the cubs should package hill, marshall, and pie for a 4-month supply of mystique
  5. This part confuses the hell out of me. This is his 21st season managing in major league baseball. We know what kind of manager he is. And he didn't do well with what last year? The only thing close to a "collapse" was the hole the team dug itself into at the beginning of the season, and they climbed out of that, obviously. That's not even the most confusing part. He calls him "an awesome manager" earlier in the paragraph. haha.
  6. Theriot and Soto were pretty out of nowhere. Dempster? I'm not sure if I would call Edmonds rugged, but he's been pretty valuable this year. But yeah, this part of the argument is also strange to me.

The only thing close to a "collapse" was the hole the team dug itself into at the beginning of the season, and they climbed out of that, obviously. I think he's referring to the playoffs last year, but I don't really know what Lou did wrong except take Z out early in game 1 Maybe. But if he's referring to the playoffs as a collapse, that was what? the sixth inning of Game 1? Not really indicative of how Lou reacts to imminent disaster.

  9. That's kind of what I'm getting at. Lou has made his fair share of comments over the past two seasons indicating that Marquis was in danger of losing his spot. However, the fact that he has not lost his rotation spot after numerous strings of poor performances makes me think that Lou does not actually mean what he says about Marquis being on thin ice. He has given Hill a much shorter leash. While Hendry seems to support Hill, I'm not entirely confident that Lou would allow Hill to just step into Marquis' spot when Hill is ready to come up.
  10. Has there been any comment by Jim Hendry or anyone else about what the plan is for Hill for the rest of the season? I mean, now that he is doing well, is there any indication of a time frame when he could be back up, or is it all just speculation at this point? I'm hoping they are looking to get Hill back into the rotation sooner rather than later (after a few games in AAA, of course), but Marquis has been given unlimited chances this season, and I have a hard time believing they will finally yank him from the rotation.
  11. I heard the Cubs used the money they got for Hamilton to sign Soriano and Fukudome, and to help pay for Rich Harden's contract, making it the best deal in baseball history.
  12. yeah, definitely a mix-up. http://boisehawks.com/team/roster/index.html?player_id=63
  13. Weak Division? In the last 5 seasons, when we haven't won the division (2004, 2005, 2006), a team from the NL Central has played in the World Series. The Central's the best division in baseball this year. You can't really blame Hendry for 2004 either... you definitely can for 2005/2006 though. That really doesn't mean all that much. Doesn't mean the division was strong those years. It may have been (in 2004, it certainly was), but the fact that the teams from the division made the World Series doesn't mean the division was strong. That said, the NL Central is certainly a very strong division right now compared to others. How do you determine the division is strong? What other criteria can you use? The All Star game (an exhibition game)? Best record (with unbalanced schedule)? East Coast media bias? The bottom line is that the winner of the WS is the best team and the loser in the WS is the 2nd best team. false.
  14. Yeah, he was. That was his first off-season as general manager.
  15. not that i disagree that hendry could be a candidate for exec of the year, but i'm not sure what theriot and dempster have to do with it. there was basically zero doubt that they were going to make the 25-mean out of spring training, it was just a matter of how they would be used, which seems like more of a credit to lou than anything. fukudome, harden, edmonds i can agree with, and gaudin could probably be added to that list. re-signing wood for relatively cheap to be a reliever could also be a notch on his belt for exec of the year consideration.
  16. A-Clown, He still showboats, he still watches his home runs, and he's probably still a primadonna. The only difference is that Edmonds now plays for the Cubs. BTW, Rodman never played for the Cubs. wait no i like this option because its the one that's true.
  17. Nah, Edmonds has probably just toned it down in his old age. (That could be option number 4.)
  18. except, in real life, mackowiack has sucked against the cubs.
  19. OMG you can't be serious! How are we supposed to win anything with a hot dog like Ramirez in our lineup. Derosa at 3rd or bust.
  20. i can't think of anything more idiotic than signing a 38-year-old who's been on a steady decline since 2004 to take time away from our promising top prospect. i feel the need to use the word idiotic in this post again just to hammer the point home. idiotic. yep, i think that should do it.
  21. I love this organization. I love the part of that quote that says he needs to be more consistent. Consistency is not the problem. He has been bad in at least 4 of his 6 starts, and had a lucky night in Colorado considering all the fly balls he gave up. It's not like he's been alternating back and forth between good start and bad start. I don't get it. In spring training it seemed like he had one foot out the door. What happened? How did he go from that to having a leash so long that it probably has a place in the Guinness Book of World Records? With Gallagher, Hart, and Marshall (and even Lieber), I was so confident that Marquis would be removed from the rotation at the first sign of trouble. This organization hates making sense.
  22. Apparently you haven't seen next offseason's free agent list. It's starting pitcher city. Really? Who's available aside from Sabathia and Burnett? Sheets is, but I wouldn't want the Cubs getting involved with such an injury risk.
  23. For all the (well-deserved) criticism Dusty received about his handling of young players, Lou has been just as bad. Pie, Cedeno, Marshall, Hill...it's amazing Soto wasn't benched in favor of Blanco after his K streak. ETA: His handling of Murton last year was terrible as well, and it took for too long for him to give Soto ABs over Jason flipping Kendall.
  24. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/925768,CST-SPT-cuban01.article This same theory is mentioned in a few other articles about Cuban's visit last night, too. Mariotti - http://www.suntimes.com/sports/mariotti/925764,mariotti050108.article Even though a lot of (most?) Chicago fans hate Mariotti, I have to give him credit for really pushing the Cuban story and putting it out there as much as possible. The more public support for Mark, the better. Trib - http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-080430-mark-cuban-chicago-cubs,1,1187833.story This visit also seems to be coinciding with the time around which the Cubs were said to be opening up their books to prospective bidders.
