  1. Not quite, the Bulls get $8M in cap space next offseason if they trade Tyson for Brown, about half the cap space they started with this offseason. Sam Smith reported Wallace's deal is frontloaded (starting at $17 million in the first year of the deal and steadily decreasing to about $12 million in the last year). In that case, at least $1 million more can be added to that original figure of $8 million. That's a pretty decent chunk of change to plug whatever holes are discovered this season.
  2. Agreed, I want Harrington. Harrington would provde the offensive weapon that the Bulls are lacking, buthow much is he looking for? Would his presence combined with Wallace make extensions for the core difficult?
  3. I would love Ben Wallace to become a Bull, but I just hope that doesn't hinder future extensions to Nocioni, Deng, and Hinrich. I would also hope the Bulls can deal Tyson if they sign Wallace. Is there any truth to rumors that the Bulls could acquire Boozer or Marion for Tyson?
  4. Can someone please explain the stat VORP to me? I feel so behind in the world of stats when these terms are thrown out there that mean nothing to me.
  5. Indeed, I believe his brother has something to do with pharmaceutics and may have been involved with supplying the "goods" to him. They are both in deep doo-doo His brother will lose whatever license or job he has... aside from that, they may get off light since apparently Jason has been squealing like a mouse. I don't blame him at all for quitting and I can't figure out why anyone would. He's disgraced....not only professionally but also with his colleagues. If the Diamondbacks were the mob, he'd soon be sleeping with the fishes in davy jones locker. I suppose. But I for one am sick of all the overt drug use in this sport and am glad that more cockroaches will see the light of day because he's ratting them out. Don't like it? Too damn bad. Shouldn't have used roids then. Meh. It's not like Grimsley is doing this to better the sport. Not at all. He's ratting people out to try to convince prosecutors to go easy on him. Do I have any sympathy for the other players who used performance enhancing drugs? Absolutely not. But it's hard for me to cheer Grimsley on considering that he used performance enhancing drugs too and that he's only doing this to look out for himself. Sure, the his motive is sketchy, but the outcome could be productive in cleaning up the sport. It is a bit strange to see quotes in the Trib from Ozzie Guillen and Jeff Nelson irate that Grimsley named names. Why not stay out of it, because defending accused steroid users does not reflect well on anyone. [aimless fingerpointing] But then again, Grimsley and Nelson did pitch together, and Nelson seemed awfully pissed off, so Nelson was probably one of the guys named [/aimless fingerpointing]
  6. When does Pagan return? Has it been discussed what will happen to the roster when he and Lee do return? 2 spots would need to be cleared. Bynum would probably be one, but would that mean Aardsma goes back down too? Of course, there is always the possibility of another trade.
  7. If he starts at 1B for the next few weeks before Lee comes back, and Walker moves to 2B, his ability to hit home runs alone should be at least a small improvement over Neifi, Hairston, Bynum, Mabry, etc.
  8. Maybe he just needed a change of scenery... Oh wait, he already tried the "change of scenery" card. Nevin had a pretty solid April but has been absolutely awful in May. EDIT: Does this mean Bynum is a goner? Or Hairston maybe?
  9. If the biting incident is true, it would not be the first time for Cora. Hawk and DJ were talking about their favorite baseball fights and one of them mentioned a time when Cora was a player. Cora was found at the bottom of the pile biting someones ankle (I forget who the recipient of the bite was.) I think Joey Cora has a problem keeping his teeth to himself.
  10. Nothing has come up yet on Google news our Yahoo news. I'm going to wait and see, but for now I just don't see this being true. The infatuation with [bad] second basemen has to end somewhere...right?
  11. With Wood returning tomorrow and a possible addition of Tony Womack, I'm psyched! We're recapturing the magic of 2003. Are Troy O'Leary and Dave Veres available?
  12. That highlight reel misrepresents the Cubs as a team with power. Unfortunately, there weren't too many home runs besides the ones in that sequence.
  13. A quality start is achieved when a pitcher goes at least 6 innings, giving up 3 or fewer runs.
  14. I was with some Philly fans this weekend and man, have they given up on that team. They are truly sick of it, and want to blow the whole thing up. And I think ownership is sensitive to the lack of interest in the team now. I think Burrell or Abreu could be had. Why is this the case? They are only 6 games back, and it is early. They seem like they could just as soon be buyers as they can be sellers. As they stand, they aren't a real playoff threat, but they have a solid lineup. They seem too close to just tear the team apart. But, if it can benefit the Cubs, I can handle their mentality.
  15. So...it's nice to see that 100% of the current rotation is a product of the farm system. :D
  16. I think at this stage you have to bring up guys like Glavine, Smoltz and even Wells or Mussina. I thought about Glavine, but with regards to Smoltz, it is hard to compare him to the rest because he spent 4 seasons in the bullpen. Although they were successful, was he not originally put in the bullpen because of longevity/injury concerns? Would that put him in the same boat that Pedro is in? Also, how do his stats as a reliever stack up against starting pitching statistics? At the same time, though, Schilling took a long time to launch his career as a starter and it wasn't until his late 20's that he became an elite starting pitcher. After looking closer at the stats, they are comparable, but Glavine has started his entire career and been the healthiest of the three over the last 20 years. He also has the most wins out of the group.
  17. So does that leave Schilling as a definite #5? I don't think anyone would argue that he was better than one of those top 4 pitchers, but outside of them, I don't think there was anyone better than Schilling and I thought his name deserved mention in this thread.
  18. That leaves the Sox with only one LHP in the bullpen now, though. Filled one hole, but created another. But Mackowiak is a good player and I'm sure finding a second lefty option won't be hard.
  19. Well, Murph's on now. I'm sure he'll have some intelligent insight on what's going on... Well, at least we know he was ok with trading "Dontrelle Willis for Derrek Lee."
  20. I guess this is the first deal in which Dave Littlefield has taken advantage of the payroll increase he was granted. This is at least a step in the right direction for the Pirates' offense. I do agree that it's weird to see the Pirates do anything that does not involve shedding payroll.
  21. Has there been any steroid suspicion surrounding Thome? It seemed to be popular to go down that road when a big slugger sustained an injury last season. Was there any talk that Thome's injuries were related to steroid use?
