  1. To be fair, some of the key players on those Marlins teams were shrewdly acquired through signings and trades. They might not have had a huge budget, but they picked up guys like Dontrelle Willis, Moises Alou, Derrek Lee, Gary Sheffield, and Kevin Brown in those ways. True, they developed guys like Edgar Renteria, Livan Hernandez, Josh Beckett, and Miguel Cabrera came up with them, but saying their 1997 and 2003 WS teams were built with "their own players" is a bit of a misnomer. A quick look at that 1997 team shows that their top 4 hitters, top 2 bench bats, 5 of the top 6 starters, their closer, and main setup guy were the result of FA signings and trades. Essentially, Livan was the only homegrown player to have a truly positive impact. Renteria had an OPS+ of 80 that year.
  2. I realize that the IU search has created much more interest on the board, but South Carolina has a new head coach. It is Western Kentucky head coach Darrin Horn. For those of you giving Crean all the love for Dwyane Wade, it was Horn who got him to Marquette. No coach has ever won anything at a press conference, but for a 35 year old head coach, he crushed it. I am very excited about the future of South Carolina basketball. Today, Rivals.com's 9th rated player, Scotty Hopson verbals to Tennessee. Other rumors suggest Tyler Smith is staying at UT for another season. I am very excited about the future of Tennessee basketball. (Until we lose Asst Coach Tony Jones, that is...) I find it hilarious that this post had nothing at all to do with what was quoted. I don't care, we all love talking about our schools in good times, but the need to quote the current conversation was quite funny.
  3. Watching DC United play Pachuca, and DC's back line looks terrible. They're about to lose 2-0.
  4. I think it'll be tough for Beane to "sell high" on Harden considering he hasn't pitched a full season since 2004, and has 70 IP the last two years.
  5. Crean and Izzo in the same conference should be fun.
  6. This matters how? Granted, Soriano did look particularly horrible, especially in his second at bat that featured him swinging the bat 6 times at 6 balls. Very frustrating. At least with Theriot you know the exact outcome of his PA every time: "Ryan Theriot flies out softly to RF" Oh, come now. He grounds out plenty often. He couldn't even make contact half the time today. I kept thinking to myself, if he's going to strikeout, then will anyone notice if we replace him with the bat boy?
  7. He's not a rookie. He played professionaly in Japan. He knows better. It was bad luck, had the ball not hit Soto he would've had 3rd and we only would've needed a sac fly.
  8. haha, why the memphis hate TT? They're athletes before basketball players, as their shooting percentages show. Especially Dorsey though. He's Ben Wallace on a good college team, a goon that can't score if he's not a foot away from the basket. The main difference in the comparison being that Wallace doesn't think he's as good as Dorsey does, which makes it worse.
  9. Dorsey definitely deserved a T for that. It was borderline excessive even if he wasn't by himself with no Texas players within 40 feet of him. Of course, I'm biased because I hate him.
  10. Douglas-Roberts is a finalist for the Wooden Award? Is that a joke?
  11. UCLA is pushing how much they're allowed to bump, grab, and reach on defense.
  12. Here's a really in depth breakdown of Crow's mechanics. They liken him to AJ Burnett or JJ Putz, but also think he's a Tommy John candidate like Burnett.
  13. I want to punch Joey Dorsey in the throat. He and Dozier are a bunch of blunt instruments, I really hope Texas puts them in their place since Michigan State doesn't appear to be up to the task.
  14. They should probably look into him making decisions for the Twins as well as the Giants. This is bad news for my fantasy teams.
  15. Texas making me feel real secure about picking them all the way by dismantling a good Stanford team.
  16. That's the natural order of things. You don't mess with the natural order.
  17. Curry is just ridiculous.
  18. If anyone harasses you, let Roast protect you.
  19. If you're calling more than a foul a minute, you're probably calling a game too tight. 17 fouls in 13 minutes of the second half, 37 in 33 minutes overall.
  20. This Louisville/Tennessee matchup is like a pick up game on steroids.
  21. Do it. If Sabathia flops, your pitching is strong to compensate, plus there's a lot more pitchers that will come out and be successful that aren't claimed now than there are all around talents that steal a bunch of bases.
  22. Xavier is just reaming WVU in the early going. This is fantastic.
  23. probably not. am i the only one who is sick of hearing about ronny's "upside" without the caveat that he was horrendous for an entire year and is very unlikely to reach that upside? not nearly as sick as I am of hearing about how horrible Ronny is and how he can't hit ML pitching, without the caveat that he was 23 freaking years old. you say "23 freaking years old" like it's unheard of for a guy to come up at that age and perform well. i'd venture a guess that the average major leaguer breaks into the league around age 23. and i am still waiting for some examples of guys who have been truly horrible players for their entire first year of play, at age 22 through 24, and turned out to be above average major leaguers. Quick and dirty Rich Aurilla Michael Young. Using Cedeno's comparable players, you can add Davey Johnson, Jay Bell, Bill Spiers, and Eddie Taubensee to the list.
  24. What do you get if you take out his hottest (july) and coldest month (september)? I guess I can't argue taking out his hottest month since my original post made the point of Theriot's stats without September. But at least there is semi-logical reasoning for his September. What do you attribute his hot month to? HGH? His hot month and cold month are both probably fluctuations. My point is that Theriot was very similar to Cedeno for most of last season aside from July(490 PA's). Assuming Theriot is a safer bet because his hot month was hotter than hot isn't right. His hottest month is 245 points(OPS) better than any other month. He had another month almost exactly like his worst month(.202/.257/.263 and .224/.272/.276).
  25. Let's not pretend that Theriot was right around his final production the whole year, he's more than capable of being as awful as Cedeno in 2006. .245/.271/.339/.610 .250/.302/.325/.627 One of these is Theriot without his insane July last year, the other is Cedeno 2006. Also, career wise and compared to Theriot's '07, Cedeno is as good or better than Theriot against RHP.
