We heard 140 million over and over again, and if it wasn't 140 million it was speculation that it was higher than that. Again, not to be rude, but what you and I heard is not more accurate than what Hendry knows. They wanted another LH bat and DeRo became the odd man out. Remember that they started last year with a $118 payroll. They added another $3.5 or so with Hardens trade and Wood added another $3.5 in bonuses on his contract. They finished at roughly $125. I'm not positive, but like you said, $140 seems to be the hard line. They are already there, no. At some point another $3.3 mil (difference between Miles/DeRo) has to matter. Two important factors: Their payroll is set up to increase yearly for '09 and '10. And they had to make expensive FA moves (Demp and Bradley). Somebody was going to fall victim to those factors. Those somebody's are DeRo, Marquis and Wood. My head hurts. -

What I'm saying is they could've skipped the Miles/DeRosa difference and still been at an acceptable payroll.

The difference between DeRosa and Miles' salary is about the difference between our payroll and the 140 million mark that was widely reported as the budgeted payroll amount.

This isn't really the correct way to think about anything. Miles shouldn't be in the lineup over Fontenot, but Miles and Fukudome are completely unrelated. They don't affect each other. Fukudome (unless he starts crushing the ball and you can't take him out of the lineup against LHP) should only be playing against RHP to start the season, while Miles should only be playing against LHP... if that. If Miles and Fukudome are in the same lineup that means one is facing their unfavorable split while a guy who rakes against that split (Fontenot against RHP, Johnson against LHP) is on the bench. That's why they're related in this conversation. Kosuke had no platoon split last year.

As a big market team, I'm not sure much should be put into who the Cubs drafted but didn't sign. In most cases it seems to be guys who are nearly universally regarded as higher picks and the Cubs are hoping that money changes their mind. Wilson and Gray from this last draft are good examples.

Interesting, my first reaction when I saw it was that Missouri's pod was stacked. WVU doesn't have an impressive resume, but both Pomeroy and Sagarin Predictor have them ranked 6th. I'm not sure if they're that good, but I'd put them over the other 6 seeds. North Dakota State would also be pretty scary for a 14th seed if they end up that low. I didn't realize WVU was so well regarded by Pomeroy. Still, they're only 4-7 against the Pomeroy Top 50(including a win against Georgetown and excluding a loss to Davidson), and considering the other 6 seeds are Illinois(no thanks), Syracuse(again, no thanks), and Cal(yes please), it's a pretty good draw. Plus it's no west coast teams in Boise. I was more excited about being in the same half of the bracket as the worst 2 seed in Indy though.

I like this(RHP/LHP): Soriano Fontenot/Johnson Ramirez Bradley Soto Lee Fukudome/Theriot Theriot/Miles Although switching up Lee and Soto to protect Lee's ego or whatever is fine too. Kosuke and Fontenot can switch if Kosuke gets hot and/or Fontenot slumps. Same with Theriot and Johnson against LHP. Also interesting to note, with platoons in CF and 2B and Bradley being a switch hitter, we project an all right handed lineup v. LHP.

Cmon, Marte regressed in almost every way imaginable in 3 different AAA seasons(okay, his strikeout rate went down his last year). We're talking about being over 3 seasons removed from the last time he did anything positive to his value as a player. I'd take him with open arms with the alternative in the minor leagues being Josh Lansford right now, but let's not pretend Marte just caught a bad break or something, in terms of time he's as far removed from being good as Mark Prior is.

I really don't like seeing pods where Mizzou is the highest seed and their second round matchup would be in Boise against a west coast team. Stupid OU and Memphis are going to make it impossible for them to play in KC.

what does it matter? Because he wants people to visit his website to see the pictures. Yeah, in the future, a link, with an image or two to preview(like UMFan did), is much preferrable to hotlinking a bunch of images. It gives the site that owns the image the traffic it's earned, keeps NSBB clear from any dumb infringement arguments should the owner be protective of his stuff, and it makes the pages of this thread a lot easier to load and scroll. Thanks.

I did tell you about this on April 4th, 2008. And then I brought it up again on May 26th, 2008. Can you link me to it? I can't find it by searching your posts for Kosuke or Fukudome.

I agree that Kosuke is probably going to bounce back in some fashion, but where was this tempered projection for how he'd need to adjust to 2 seamers last year?
