Gameday has put 1 of Walters' pitchers squarely in the strike zone so far, and it was a ball.

I'm not a fan of the players' union, but I wish they would push for more player rights when situations like this occur. It's like MLB is in lock-step with the umpires' union. As somebody who umps very competitive youth baseball I understand the idea that you can get chucked for any arguing of the zone, but sometimes in situations like that on what I'm sure Vanover thought was a border-line call you have to use your judgment and let the guy give off some steam. I wouldn't make a report on a player who barely, incidentally touched me when I made a "borderline" call in his opposition in such a big situation. To be fair though, the rule is in place so umps don't have to/aren't allowed to be subjective on the arguing of balls/strikes. Everyone knows that rule, if you break it you get thrown out. Similarly with having to file a report if there is contact. From what I understand its not the ump to determine if it was incidental or not, but I could be wrong. And on a side note I've really never understood how you get around not arguing balls/strikes. Sure seems to me that theres a lot of bickering when a player is upset with a call and not everyone gets thrown out. Yeah, guys can get a word in about balls and strikes if they want, they can't stomp over to the umpire and yell in his face about it. -
They did get one, but he has options and Guzman and Patton and don't. They also got a future LH reliever that actually is hard on LH hitters.

There isn't a single member of the bullpen to have pitched 6 innings yet. And yet, still the only members not to be better than Howry, Eyre, and Wuertz were last year are Gregg and Cotts, who have combined for 6.2 IP. Also, Samardzija wasn't any better than any of Heilman, Guzman, Patton, or Vizcaino have been so far. The bullpen has walked way too many guys, that's been its only real problem. It won't continue at this rate, and they will be fine.

Fontenot has 39 PA's and has a .775 OPS with a .385 OBP(numbers rounded cause I closed the calculator window) Bradley has had 25 PA's. Soto has had 15 PA'S. We haven't even played 10 games yet. -

Out of curiosity, what are those numbers without Marmol? I'm very sorry, I forgot to click the relief split when I looked at the team page. Those are the team numbers without Marshall's start today. Bullpen as a whole: ERA: 3.77 WHIP: 1.41 K/9: 8.42 BB/9: 5.80 Without Marmol: ERA: 4.44 WHIP: 1.52 K/9: 8.55 BB/9: 6.15 The same point remains, except the walk rates are even more flukishly high. The relievers need to throw more strikes, and I think there's little doubt they will do that. Our perceptions are colored by the 10 innings they've had to throw in the last 48 hours. -

The Cubs bullpen now has an ERA of 3.92, a WHIP of 1.39, a K/9 of 9.75, and a BB/9 of 4.75. They're walking way too many people is the main problem, but those numbers don't paint a picture of disaster. They're even more influenced since we've played only 9 games and have had our starters throw a combined 8 innings the last 2 days meaning more work for the worst of the pen. -
Vizcaino now with 2.2 IP, 2 K, and only a single to Pujols given up.

Guzman is about the best bullpen guy we have right now outside of Marmol I keep hearing that, but at some point the man should, you know, get some people out without giving up hits and walks. 7 baserunners(2 XBH) in 5.2 IP with 7 Ks

The TV guys weren't really complaining, Ankiel looked back at the bleachers with a grin on his face after he caught a fly ball and they pointed out that you hear some creative stuff with Wrigley putting fans so close to the players.

??? How is Chris Duncan a trash player? Plus he has exceptional power. He's hit like 50 home runs in 900 career at bats. You're probably best off not trying to start rational debate about these things in a game thread. That said, Duncan is a career .203/.260/.350/.611 hitter against LHP with just 5 HR before today.
