  1. can't wait to tell my kids about the olden days when the Cubs held a team scoreless in the first
  2. This is unscientific, but spot checking a couple recent Wrigley starters on their Fangraphs Pitch f/x velocity charts, Hellickson and Nelson had similar velocities to other starts, and Velasquez had a season high on Monday.
  3. If you look at the last 11 months instead of 12 he's at a .775 OPS/101 wRC+ which is plenty valuable with the defense/positional value he provides. I'm probably never going to want to just hand him an every day position, and I'd like to see him used as a trade chip before he hits arbitration and folks no longer dream on the what if's, but he's great for the role he has.
  4. Brett's crew quoted the relevant rules for NCAA Softball: http://www.baseballisfun.com/2017/05/02/alabama-catcher-misses-home-plate-during-game-tying-hr-celebration-gets-tagged-out/ Basically, the fact that the live ball is over the fence doesn't matter, because it's an appeal play. Same way as if you appeal that a runner missed 1st base by throwing the new ball and stepping on the base, it's a gesture implying the appeal rather than the literal act of tagging/forcing the person out. I think the Bama folks might have an argument considering the hitter was on their way back to the plate to touch it, but there might be some language similar to how you can't go halfway to the dugout on a dropped 3rd strike and then break for first.
  5. the scouting report certainly doesn't say 'watch out for him spraying line drives to the opposite field on outside pitches from RHP', I tell ya what
  6. how was that not a swing, that ump from the other day would've called that two strikes
  7. Even a runner with a preposterous lead is still further from second than Lester is on the mound, and Lester has no problem with underhanded tosses. All he has to do is repeat what happened every time, it doesn't matter if he does it underhand or by lollipopping an overhand throw. That seemed to be generally close at second, though, didn't it? And that guy doesn't have great speed. But I'm sure I'm wrong. It was extremely unclose, Baez had the glove waiting for his slide at the base, and Lester didn't exactly rush his way through the process.
  8. Just my opinion, but that was big. Because if that guy keeps running and Lester can't even get a toss to second, that would have shown you could literally just start running well before the pitch and there would be nothing to stop you. Even a runner with a preposterous lead is still further from second than Lester is on the mound, and Lester has no problem with underhanded tosses. All he has to do is repeat what happened every time, it doesn't matter if he does it underhand or by lollipopping an overhand throw.
  9. Let's just say that they lowered it today. Just in case it's not clear, that is not a joke.
  10. It is a long season, and players slump. Like Duke mentioned, Schwarber was doing just fine until about a week and a half ago, and as a high K LH hitter with a platoon split he'll probably have deeper valleys than average. If that continues until Memorial Day then that's naturally a cause for concern, but otherwise I don't see any reason to worry too much. I sure wouldn't be upset if he got a day off(especially against a LHP or two), but I get that one of his best characteristics is his grinding work ethic so he might be a guy who does better by working his way out of it by playing.
  11. Eddie Butler? He and Mills have a combined two healthy ankles, so not yet.
  12. move Anderson to LF, just have him and Duensing alternate innings until the game ends or MLB makes the Cubs forfeit the franchise for making a mockery of the sport
  13. gonna set up a bot that posts Start Montgomery in the game thread every 5 days
  14. Greinke is the name that piqued my interest. Some interesting considerations with him but could turn out very well if they line up. EDIT: This is also a topic better for Transactions, I'll move it there.
  15. Montero and his wife became US citizens today. https://www.instagram.com/p/BTkH_iXFYmS/
  16. Longenhagen said something along the lines of some scouts thinking he can handle center. oh nice: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/daily-prospect-notes-425/ https://streamable.com/4215o
  17. Burks is 3 for 7 with a 2B, HR, BB, and K on the double header too, his continued flirtation with a .900 OPS is nice because below Iowa the position players aren't doing much. Has anyone seen any reports on his defense?
  18. Nice to see some K's out of Hedges: 6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 6/1 K/BB Still would like to see some more hit suppression out of him(27 H in 28.2 IP), but only 1 HR is real nice and he looks like he's on track to at least be partially useful while he can be optioned.
  19. Yeah I'd expect his LHP line to regress and his RHP to progress given more time. It's also noteworthy that he's probably seeing a disproportionate number of ABs against RHP that are against RP v. SP which makes things a little tougher on him. His 6% walk rate and 20% K rate against same sided pitching is on point, so with some better matchups, BABIP progression, and just luck I'd expect him to look more normal.
