  1. Yeah, anyone who got first round money or a big IFA bonus is going to be difficult to extend if they're worth extending. Contreras is the closest, but he's the least proven and plays the most physically demanding position. I could see something with Hendricks happening, assuming he doesn't completely crater like the last couple starts have been.
  2. The Rockies, who you might recall from such hits as 'what if we gave up the number 11 pick to sign a middle infielder to play 1B' and 'why are all our players breaking their bones', are now 5 games clear of the Dodgers and 7 clear of the Giants in the West. Fangraphs' projected standings has them set to tie the Cardinals for the 2nd wild card.
  3. Cease getting hit around: 4 IP, 6 H (5 2B), 3 ER, 5/3 K/BB
  4. Eric Thames has 10 home runs, 7 in 5 games against the Reds, and 3 in 14 games against everyone else.
  5. Catching up on the first inning, that's not the first time that Cervelli has kicked out at a baserunner while 'receiving' a throw to the plate, which seems to have no other purpose than to spike said baserunner.
  6. Being able to stay hitting, whether it's DH or position on non-pitching days apparently is a big deal to him. No team should be stupid enough to offer that, by almost all accounts I've read he's a non-prospect, essentially, as a hitter. He's producing at a pretty high level with the bat, and non-prospect as a hitter is much harsher than I recall, but given the swing and miss and risk to his health as a pitcher, I don't think you'd see him as a 2 way player. It might take him time to realize it, but he would be ideal for this iteration of the Cubs roster, where he can basically help lengthen the pen and shorten the bench by being an early pinch hitter that's better than the Arrietas or Travis Woods of the world.
  7. Caratini is 13 for his last 29 with 4/3 K/BB
  8. Seattle struggles to get goals or even dangerous chances for weeks, replaces Shipp with Bruin and pushes Morris out wide, and gets 3 goals in the first half at LA.
  9. what was that shotput throw to first by Peralta
  10. Heyward had a .344 wOBA this year entering today's game(.329 at this instant). His career total is .336, including .346, .329, and .344 in the years before joining the Cubs. He's snagged a couple singles from BABIP luck but the rest of his peripherals are not abnormal. Treating Heyward's 2017 as if it is flukish or out of the ordinary for him is strange.
  11. welp, they finally got to teeth-for-brains Lackey
  12. And that's with something like a .220 babip The BABIP 'progression' would probably come in the form of a couple homers turning into doubles and a few BIP to K's, but even then he'd be doing very well so it's nice his hot start isn't at all flukish.
  13. The Dodgers, Giants, Cardinals, Pirates, and Mets are all under .500.
  14. Entering today Schwarber leads the NL in pitches seen, 3rd in MLB behind Bautista and Haniger. Also entering today, Schwarber trailed Almora in pitches per plate appearance, 4.42 to 4.41.
  15. Not him, 15 runs (11 earned) in 8 IP over 2 starts.
  16. Very glad Butler is preventing runs and largely getting ground balls, but I would really like to see even mediocre ability to miss bats from him. Hopefully that's just the next step in the progression, but otherwise his performance thus far looks like his 2015 in AAA. In happier news, Caratini is up to .321/.377/.464.
  17. If I'm putting on my serious hat, it's really dumb to grade fandoms like this of people just sitting and watching a game. Like if someone who can't tell you who plays first base for the Cubs and wants to trash talk an opponent, sure, but a team insulting its customers for simply being there is lame. If I'm putting on my snarky hat, I might point out that the Cubs have had legions of fans in Cincy for years, or maybe do something like this: [tweet] [/tweet]
  18. I was on the road last night and couldn't mention this in real time, but anyone else notice how hilarious it is that Price can't do bullpen management right even when he's trying to steal Francona's schtick? Leaving Lorenzen to throw pitch 41 to Rizzo when he had struggled in both innings while a power lefty was warming in the pen is quite something.
