  1. Does it matter for us? I was under the impression he just had to sign to max out our compensation. Yeah he just has to sign for the Cubs to get a pick. Doesn't matter what the amount is. The amount determines the round. If it's over 50 million it's the comp round between round 1 and 2, less than that it's the comp round between rounds 2 and 3. It's the approximate difference in getting pick 33 or 73.
  2. Maddon has said that immigrants were 'saving' his home town and pissed off that town in the process. More recently he said 'it doesn't make any sense' to own an automatic rifle. I don't believe or expect Maddon to be a paragon of progressive politics, but the extrapolation that some folks have done to one of his comments is silly. More to the point, I think Joe Maddon is a great manager. I am also getting tired of his 'always on' method of being a great manager since the media eats this stuff up and reports it at every turn.
  3. This is it, this is the year that Maddon's personality starts to wear on me.
  4. That something also almost got in a fist fight with Bama's strength coach after the game. [tweet] [/tweet]
  5. It's certainly not good, I gave up Facebook a few months back and even then it's way harder to get onto a TV than other options. But it's not unprecedented, and it's also only wednesday afternoon games, so I'm not exactly going to be treating as appointment TV either.
  6. The Cubs probably won't be involved in more than a couple of these, though, and it's not like you have to pay for them, so I guess it's fine. fine? No, that awful. If I pay for the season I should get the season. No different than Sunday Night Baseball or certain Fox Saturday games. It's also the same frequency and volume as Sunday Night Baseball.
  7. Worse bat, better defense/flexibility Also, LaStella is a borderline second division starter as a 2B.
  8. On one hand, that is not a good omen for the players and actually moving towards a better system for paying talent/avoiding a labor stoppage down the line. On the other hand, Mike Moustakas is not very good(8.3 combined fWAR the last 5 years, 3 years under 1.3 fWAR) and by at least some accounts is a bit of a tool, so I'm sure not sad that he in particular got the squeeze.
  9. Still working for me.

  11. you serious clark
  12. The anecdotes in this Steve Francis story are incredible. https://www.theplayerstribune.com/steve-francis-i-got-a-story-to-tell/ A sample:
  13. ZiPS says Dallas Keuchel would make quite the 5th starter for the Cubs.
  14. Tommy Pham's eventual flameout is gonna make Carlos Gomez look like Sean Casey.
  15. goodness gracious Joe Corona [tweet] [/tweet]
  16. MLS starts their season today. If you've wanted to follow a team more closely, now's a good time to start. MLS Live is moving to ESPN's new ESPN+ streaming platform, and until ESPN+ launches later this spring, MLS Live is free. All you need is to sign up(no subscription required) and start streaming, though local blackouts still apply: https://live.mlssoccer.com/ Once ESPN+ launches it'll only be $5/month for programming that includes MLS Live, so the streaming package is discounted(it used to be $70 for a single team subscription) on top of other programming ESPN+ might have.
  17. am I crazy or didn't this happen last spring training too, it might have been Scherzer exactly but if not another good SP
  18. I haven't been following along, but doesn't ST Gameday only show decisive pitches in pitch counts since there isn't reliable pitch count/location data? Either way, love to see Wilson and Edwards set down the side without walks even at the start of spring.
  19. Yeah, I know this is kinda my thing, but I seriously have no memory of this person from last season. He was the guy who was only on the roster because he had played shortstop before, that also couldn't stop making errors at shortstop when we put him in. This was also around the time of peak Vaunted-Brewers-Anxiety.
  20. Jim Hickey now my new favorite coach after this story throwing shade at Matt Garza. https://theathletic.com/254355/2018/02/26/why-cubs-believe-jim-hickey-is-the-right-pitching-coach-at-the-right-time/
  21. I actually turned it on just in time for Brooks' outing. He gave up two hits but they were a bloop to short LF that Burks dove and missed(Russell/Baez makes the play easy) and a 4 hopper through the right side. No velocity readings so I can't be sure how hard he was throwing, but the slider looked pretty good to my amateur eye, maybe a touch loopy compared to other wipeout RP sliders. Got a swinging K with it and caught another guy looking with the fastball. Competition wasn't that high at that point like you might guess, but he did face Nick Franklin(he was the bloop 1B IIRC).
  22. It's like he's in an old video game where they only have 4 different body types to choose from so he gets shoehorned into one that's obviously wrong.
  23. Torn UCL for Honeywell.
  24. I'm gonna have to start keeping a list of the players that are inexplicably ranked in front of Rucker. Erling Moreno? Erling '64 IP in 14 injury-plagued and walk-filled starts' Moreno?
