    Look, I know a lot of you think being a baseball robot is the thing that all the cool kids do, but it's more than a little odd to be talking about how you could afford the guy you just signed because the guy you traded for the year before is on a VERY team-friendly deal. Like, everyone knows it's true and he's right, but it just seems like one of those things where you don't talk it up to the press. What's the point? Similarly, I know it's en vogue to be on the lookout for exploitation of players given the current offseason(and to an extent, political) climate, but I don't see a big issue in clarifying the logic behind the moves when there's a direct correlation. Quintana is on a team friendly deal, and part of that is a function of the arbitration system, but he's on a team friendly deal because of a conscious choice he made to lock in tens of millions of dollars that were far from certain at the time. I'd love for the Quintana's of the world to get a larger share of the pie in the future too, but I don't think it's gauche to point out that the contract he signed with another team facilitated other moves.

    I'd feel the Quintana comments come off worse if he would have been FA eligible but was getting like 5 mil a year, or if he were just 1st year arb eligible or something. He signed an extension after his first good season in the big leagues that even with his best possible outcome realized, will cost him about 25 million or so. That's a perfectly fine trade off to make for a SP of all people, and especially considering he'd still be arbitration eligible without the extension, it's hard for me to get too worked up about Quintana feeling like a pawn.

    I assume that Sullivan is making notes for his next column on the huge blunder of Darvish wearing a plaid shirt that clashes with the pinstripes.

    It is just absurd that for as good as the 2016 team was projected to be, 2018 is projected one win better in the rotation(when you add Darvish), one win better for position players, and one win better in the bullpen. I don't think anyone should count on 100+ wins as a rule, but I think if that happens it's gonna be apparent pretty quickly. A lot of people have labeled last year's performance as regression to the mean instead of potentially being a WS/injury hangover, and there's a whole lot of potential for a pop-up 5 win season from the likes of Contreras/Russell/Baez.

    I hope that is true for Jake's sake because I would like him not to be the avatar of this CBA by waiting until June to sign.

    I won't be naive enough to think that no one will do something stupid at some point, but I do think there's a difference in the novelty. Fukudome was coming to MLB from Japan and was the first major player the Cubs have had from Japan, Darvish has been here for 6 years and pitched in Wrigley in the playoffs last year.

    Might they also land a high quality arm with the compensation pick for Arrieta? Maybe, but that guy isn't going to be a factor at the MLB level until 2021 in all likelihood.

    The distinction is that they're trying to stay in the green this year so they can fly into the red next year with less worry. Depending on their tolerance for total payroll and the penalties for luxury tax they might have to make a tweak to fit in Harper's deal(like selling off the last year of Zobrist's deal by attaching a prospect), but already being in the red for 2019 is not a large concern.

    Also, an opt out given to a 31 year old SP for 2+ years into a top of the market contract might as well not exist. I don't care if the Luxury tax magically goes up by 50 million tomorrow and he wins the Cy Young the next 2 years, Darvish isn't opting out.

    An understated result of this offseason's moves is the SP depth being built up beyond this year. The 2019 team has: Quintana Darvish Hendricks Lester Chatwood Smyly Montgomery All under contract, plus Alzolay, Mills, Tseng, and an outside shot at at one of the college pitchers making the leap. Even considering the toll the '18 season will likely take, that's way better a starting point than this offseason. Combined with there being no current gaps or departures on the position player side, it really lines up for next offseason to be Harper and miscellany moves.

    There's an off day every week until the 3rd week of June, so they'll be halfway to a 6 man rotation on that alone until nearly the all-star break, plus the early months are more rainout prone. That said, as founding member of the Start Montgomery PAC, I do not object one bit to him getting more innings.

    As long as it's not after 1 year he can have an opt out every year starting after 2019 for all I care. And I don't even care all that much about an opt out after 2018.

    The Cubs now have 4 starters projected by ZiPS to be worth at least 3 wins. The rest of the NL Central combined has 2.

    Depending on your definition, Clark is the first former player to head the MLBPA, the only other possibility is when Bob Feller was President of The American Baseball Guild, which was pre-unionization. It's been labor lawyers running the show for the 55 years between Feller and Clark.

    I would imagine because Travis wants to make guaranteed money in 2019, and the Tigers offer wayyyy more opportunity for innings that he can use to make his case.

    Other NL competitors: Dodgers - 49 WAR Arizona - 34 WAR Colorado - 32 WAR Nationals are the one team with ZiPS yet to be released. And in the AL (which has an extra spot on the depth chart for DH): Houston - 52 WAR Cleveland - 48 WAR Boston - 46 WAR Yankees - 46 WAR Angels - 36 WAR In other words, the Cubs are a Darvish away from having the best on-paper team in baseball, maybe even if they *only* added Arrieta too.

    Hendricks is definitely going to be underrated by FIP-based WAR, but that probably balances out that Lester is probably a longer shot for 4 WAR himself.

    Depth chart comparison to the rest of the division: Cubs - 50 WAR Cardinals: 40 WAR Brewers: ~35 WAR (theirs came out pre-Yelich and Cain, but that 35 is probably the optimistic number) Reds: 32 WAR Pirates: ~30 WAR (theirs came out before the Cole/McCutchen trades, 30 is definitely the optimistic number)
