I agree that the biggest mistake is inserting PCA to begin with. He hasn't shown himself to be a productive baserunner at this level in limited time, and while you get the defensive upgrade it strikes me as absurd to do that after Tauchman's 2nd at bat when you are up 4 runs in the *4th*. Plus there was a runner in front of him to blunt the benefit of PCA running to begin with. Also if that's a thing you're considering then you really ought to consider not putting Mastrobuoni right before Tauchman, because this is twice now that has made for an easy late inning RP decision to go after those 2 lefties in succession. If Gomes is straddling those two then you either never get to PCA or he's inheriting a different situation with a more clear PH/don't PH decision.

I didn't see anything in particular, and thinking on it I doubt it's a singular thing. Outside of the matchups bit that you mentioned, maybe he's battling some fatigue, maybe they want Taillon and Stroman to stay on consistent schedules, maybe it's a hedge that if Steele has to pitch Sunday that Hendricks can still start WC game 1(since he only has 1 start either way as you said)

Adding on to the Canario->Tauchman->PCA decision, is Mastrobuoni that much better a defender than Wisdom that it was worth it to set up an almost certain LHRP facing him and PCA?

Absolutely not, even on zero pitches his command is a tossup and he'd likely face PH + top of the order. Leiter/Cuas/Smyly/Merryweather should all be available, gotta trust 2 of those to get 6 outs (plus the chance of more offense)

No, baserunning isn't counted in OPS+ or wRC+ (the most common '100 = average' metrics you'll see quoted. Fangraphs' 'Off' counting value does include baserunning, and Hoerner is 62nd of 135 qualified hitters.
