  1. They aren't consistent enough to be of any value. A player will perform out of his mind one year in one situation(say bases loaded) and abysmally the next.
  2. MJ is the perfect example of this. I don't know how anyone could watch MJ and say there's no such thing as as a clutch performer. As far as baseball: Bases empty: Manny .236 avg/.332 OBP David Ortiz: .275 avg/.353 OBP Aramis: .279 avg/.313 OBP Runners On: Manny .346 avg/.439 obp Ortiz .290 avg/ .381 obp Aramis: .327 avg/.397 obp These are three people I would consider clutch, and the numbers show they are different batters when runners are on. Aramis said as much a few years ago in an interview. Aramis in '05 Runners on: .327/.397/.628/1.025 Scoring position: .285/.367/.492/.859 Scoring position, 2 outs: .186/.314/.322/.636 Does the clutch go away?
  3. he WATCHES the games That's right, you ought to try it sometime. Of course he watches the games. Do you think that stat oriented people hate watching baseball? That everyone who doesn't subscribe to clutch is a mathmetician that's never seen baseball before?
  4. I think the success rate is about the same as those with college experience. Oden could very well not turn into a superstar, but I don't think it'll be due to a lack of college ball experience. I'll clarify my point. I don't think not going to college, or only going for a year will hurt Oden. My point is that he's X amount of time away from being as good as everyone says he will be, and I don't think he'll be there as a freshman, or as an NBA player after one year in school. All of this is IMO of course. That said, that doesn't mean I think taking Oden with that '07 lottery pick is a bad idea.
  5. The improved morale really helped results form 2004 to 2005. If Walker hurt the team's morale, and thus hurt their chances, a less stupid GM would have chosen to stay with that gutty team guy Grudz when he had the chance instead of resigning Walker. Yep, should have kept Grudz. Too bad Hendry went the Moneyball route. :( yep, grudz really eclipsed walker with his offensive prowess. Well Grudz had 156 hits & 26 walks last year compared to Walker's 121 & 31, and superior defense should count for something. Grudz also played in 27 more games. Walker was far superior offensively last season. I know. He would have kept Neifi off the field. That blasted Walker, getting leg-whipped and missing time. He and Prior definitely deserve blame for missing time.
  6. If you don't believe there's such a thing as a clutch player, you must not watch much sports, and you clearly didn't play many either. I watch a lot of sports and have played plenty in my time and I don't believe there is a "clutch player." The numbers don't bear that out. If being "clutch" is an ability, then "clutch players" would have good numbers in "clutch" situations from year to year or at least numbers that are consistent with their career numbers. They do not. It's all in how you define clutch. Bases loaded in a 8-0 blowout is not the same as bases loaded with your team down by a run or two in the late innings. You can't lump the two at-bats into the same category. I think on this one, actual viewing of the game is required. It doesn't matter what situations you narrow it down to, situational performance varies wildly from year to year.
  7. You have quite the imagination. Is Jamaal Charles going to challenge the draft rules too?
  8. Hater! Seriously though, I find it hard to believe Davis would be a C in the NBA, and he won't be a great NBA player.
  9. :( Hendry, Moneyball? I'm sure he never read it, and I know he's never filled his roster that way. He missed the bible of baseball? Hard to believe. Something compels me to believe you've never read Moneyball, and anyone who falls on either "side" of the argument Moneyball seemingly created will tell you it is not the "bible of baseball".
  10. I wonder how much the Angels really value Kennedy. They've seemingly been trying to deal him for a couple years, he's an impending FA, and they have short and long term remplacements for him. If you could get him for a pitching prospect or two(lower ceiling higher performance guys like Connolly or to a lesser extent Brownlie) then that would be a good use of resources to turn that into Kennedy and Wilson.
  11. I wonder if we can say that Restovich was the Twins version of David Kelton. A lot of promise that didn't pan out short term, but maybe a change of scenery re-energizes them to get back on their trajectory. Restovich's minor league career was much better than Kelton's. Kelton cracked an .800 OPS just twice in his minor league career(once in Rookie ball). Restovich was lower than an .800 OPS just twice in his minor league time.
  12. Robinson was never going to be drafterd as a QB anyway. he's simply not accurate enough. He's as much as admitted in interviews that in order to play in the pros he'd have to do something other than quarterback At least he has enough sense to realize this, unlike Eric Crotch, who didn't seem to get the drift that winning a Heisman playing QB at Nebraska does not entitle you to get a shot as an NFL QB. Robinson could play WR, RB, or even safety. I remember reading that after his soph year, a lot of NFL teams were hoping that PSU would move him to safety because of his size and speed. I actually expect him to be drafted late on the first day. Did Robinson play safety in HS? I wonder how good a hitter he is. Myself, I'm thinking that Brad Smith would make a nice Randle-El type NFL player, I'm interested to see how his skills translate to the draft.
  13. I watched some of one of his high school games on ESPNU, and his offense wasn't extremely impressive. He ran the floor very well, and was a nice defensive presence inside, but he didn't do much in the set offense(aside from catch passes for dunks after his man helped penetration) and he had probably half a foot on everyone else in the game.
  14. "If it doesn't matter, then why do you wanna know?" "Cause I gotta know"
  15. You may get more than you want. The Bears won in Tampa with Orton at QB. If we play Tampa, it will be in Chicago with Grossman at QB. I like our chances. The only way the Bears scored was b/c Simms fumbled on the 1. Don't kid yourself into thinking the Bears are great. I love this thinking. The Bears won because they FORCED the Simms fumble. It's one thing if it's 1 lucky break, but the Bears won 11 games by that same method. I can see using that excuse for losing to Cleveland, but that's the Bears m.o. You can't just assume that next time the Bears won't turn TOs into points, because they've made a habit of doing so. I don't think his point was about the defense. I think he was saying that the offense was only able to score a TD by having to go 1 yard. First and foremost though, the Bucs don't have a bye, and they need to beat a hot Washington team first.
  16. You may get more than you want. The Bears won in Tampa with Orton at QB. If we play Tampa, it will be in Chicago with Grossman at QB. I like our chances. The win was also a win because Bryant shanked a sub-30 yard FG. Chicago's better with Grossman, but they were evenly matched earlier in the season.
  17. I thought the same thing when I saw the lineups last night. The entire secondary is gone, QB is gone, half of both lines, among others. Doesn't look too promising.
  18. The trophy for the conference with the best bowl record/percentage is still up in the air. If USC wins, the Pac-10 takes it with a 4-1(.800) mark , with wins over Texas, Northwestern, Rutgers and BYU, and a loss to Oklahoma. If Texas wins, the Big 12 and the ACC both go 5-3(.625). Big 12 wins would be over USC, Oregon, Michigan, South Carolina, and Houston; losses are to Alabama, TCU, and Clemson. ACC wins are against Louisville, South Florida, Minnesota, Boise St., and Colorado; losses are to Penn St., LSU, and Utah.
  19. Isn't it a bit unusual to be taking shots at a coworker? Or does Silverman not work at 1000?
  20. They might fall to #4 with OSU at #3. After that everyone lost until to you get to #10 V tech. No. That won't happen. Not with OSU having 2 losses. Especially with one of those losses coming to Penn St.
  21. Another yard or two and he would've missed it again, too.
  22. I thought for sure it was getting blocked.
  23. LOL @ Herbstreit "Eye of the Tiger!"
  24. Place kicking across the country is at an all time low. Some embarrassing performances all over the country all season.
