  1. The most important person on the field at all times is the hitter. He has more control over the outcome of the play than any other individual on the field, including the pitcher. Unless you want to look at intentional walks.
  2. If that's all we do, we won't have Giles in RF for 2006. That will need to be a player option to even come close to getting it done. How about 3/39 with a vesting option based on plate appearances? what does everyone else think bout that?I have asserted for a long time now that without a guaranteed fourth year we don't get him off the west coast.
  3. I'm disappointed. I've seen so many people claim Farnsy imploded (or exploded or flat out sucked) in that game that I wanted to see someone justify it in the face of the play by play. I guess giving up one hit means you stink on ice these days.
  4. There's only one Giles that can be signed. The other would have to be traded for. And no, I don't think the Cubs will sign Giles and I've never put much hope into it. I simply believe that it is an absolute no-brainer that it is what they should do.
  5. As Craig points out, HR's are Lowe's weak spot. So why not send him to Florida in place of Nolasco with the Cubs picking up part of that contract. They're going to need pitching this offseason with Burnett moving on, anyway. That ballpark would suit Lowe very well.
  6. But it's not like the Crawford boxes are only there when the Astros are up. The visiting team can also take advantage of the short porch there. Mel Ott hit most of his home runs over a wall that was 275 feet away. Should we take him out of the hall because he probably got a few "cheapies" in his career? It works both ways. There's a difference between making excuses for a loss based on the ballpark, and complaining about the stupidity of the design of the ballpark. It is the same no matter who is batting. But you wouldn't put the fences 150 feet away, or 600 feet away in any new stadium, and it's not because it would be unfair against one team. It's because it's dumb. The short left field porch is a joke. The insane cut-out area in left center is stupid, the center field is pointless. It was a poorly designed ballpark. The stupidest thing of all is that hill. Flag pole in the field of play.
  7. Oh yeah, I forgot to add: Dusty's logic in giving the pass to Holla also escapes me. Farnsy was and is just as tough on lefties as righties. Holla was no bigger threat than Mordecai, who was on deck. But because of the L/R thing, Dusty put extra stress on his pitcher by taking away the open base. Ack. Going through this inning again drives me insane.
  8. I'm curious to have someone say how Farnsworth imploded in Game 6 for the Cubs. Here is what happened after he was brought into the game with runners on second and third: - intentional walk to Lowell - Sac Fly by Conine - Intentional walk to Hollandsworth - Double by Mordecai - Remlinger in for Farnsy Farnsworth was brought into a very tough situation -- and immediately asked to throw four wide. You know, just to help him get his confidence, focus and control, I guess. Or to take away the extra time to warm up since Baker didn't have him warm to start the inning. He gets an out on the next batter. Then ha's asked to walk another guy and still keep up his confidence, focus and command. Then he gave up the double to Mordecai. So, he was ordered to walk two guys and pitch to two guys. He got one of the two guys he actually faced out. That's imploding?
  9. The PCL wipes out most any pitcher that can't keep the ball in the park.

it'll be tough in st. lou. but i have faith that clemens can beat morris in game 7 if he has to. I would love nothing more than St. Louis to win game six to get the hopes of cards fans around the world sky high. Then have Morris (my least favorite player in sports) get absolutely shellacked in game 7. It would truly make my week. no matter who you hate more, that play is what makes baseball great. no taking a knee in baseball. That was a great baseball game. No doubt. It was very fun to watch.
  11. That might be testament to XZero's post; enough Astros fans/trolls don't post enough? Tough to hate a fan base that isn't there? That last sentence sums it up for me.
  12. But we hope the good posters make up for the bad ones. This is just another chance for me to thank you for a great forum Tim. No worries. I should also say that there are an awful lot of very thoughtful, insighful and respectful Cards fans out there. The bad apples ruin the bunch for me, though. I do still try to treat everyone as individuals, though, even if you are Cards fans!
  13. Is it really fair to categorize fans based off of "trolls" on a message board? I think it's a bit silly to base your opinion on a team off of fans you've never met. Not that trolls are the only reason you dislike the Cards. Just sayin. That said... my GOD was that clutch from Pujols. Simply unreal. As the owner of the site, I think it's pretty easy for me to have my perceptions of a fanbase colored by having to deal with a literal invasion of trolls as we did last August (2004). For a while, it caused real problems for us on the admin/moderator side. Plus, having gone to college in Champaign, there were plenty of face to face encounters with arrogant Cards fans to cement the bias long before I ever started up the site. I really enjoy having our current Cards fan contributors. But in general I don't think there's a more arrogant fanbase in baseball than "Cards Nation". Except, perhaps, for Yankees fans.
  14. It's odd, but we've never had an Astros troll show up here. On the other hand, we've been inundated with Cards trolls at times. This tends to color my perceptions of who I'd like to win.

I got him back by trading him!
  16. go figure, who knew that Lidge is a choker like Farnsworth? Yes, that is sarcasm.

happy to have Pujols + Berkman both as keepers for 2006. :D
  19. He needed a good outing as he has been horrible thus far. 4 hits and two walks in three innings is horrible. And darned lucky.
  20. And you have a history of being able to find CF's on the scrap heap that can lead off, post a good OBP and play at least credible defense out there. Now that you've built up Brady Clark's trade value, would you move him and try to get as much value as you got for Podsednik? Clark is 32 years old, has played in parts of six MLB seasons and has been productive for the past year and a half. While Clark was definitely an asset, the same could be said of Scotty before they moved him. As another part of this, I'm not sure if Nelson Cruz is CF-capable. He's a five tool guy that merited a Sept call up this season. If he could play CF (he's been on a corner, but has good speed), this would seem like a relative no-brainer. They've also got Anthony Gwynn, Jr. who played at AA this season and posted a .370 OBP in the southern league with 34 steals. I'm not thinking of Brady as a Corey replacement (I don't think he'll repeat his numbers), but just looking around baseball at what might transpire and who might get moved.
  21. Oh, then I'm sure Tim's proposal will go over well :P As good and fair of an idea Tim has, I just don't see an MLB player taking a pay cut before they hit FA. Even one as bad as Corey was last year. He has to face the reality that if the Cubs non-tender him, he's not going to get a $3M contract elsewhere. But I did forget about the Boras factor in this plan. You don't think, say Colorado, Detroit, the Yankees, Red Sox or Dodgers wouldn't pay him $3m if we cut him completely loose? $3m isn't a lot of money, especially for the latter 3 teams. Maybe I'm overestimating how much his horrendous 2005 will depress his value. It's possible Boras could put together one of his infamous "booklets" on Corey and show that last year was an anomoly along the way to him being a great player. Can't see Epstein or DePo wanting to throw $3M his way. Detroit got much better production from their CF's in 2005. The Yankees will target a name like Hunter. Colorado or Washington might be dumb enough. But I think they're too cheap.

  23. Just to clarify -- the only way I'd want Corey in CF next year is if Giles (or other stud) is in RF and the infield has very solid pieces in place. In that case, I'd go to Corey and tell him that I just want him to play a great CF, concentrate on his defense and take anything he gives on offense as a bonus.
  24. I'll take Wilson over Lofton, but that's not saying much. BTW - regarding Patterson's salary: if I were in JH's shoes and couldn't get a good value for him at this point, I'd sit down with him and his agent and explain that based upon his production in 2005 it isn't feasible for the team to give him a raise. I'd then talk with them and say that the team has by no means given up on Corey, but that paying him close to the $2.8M he made last year just isn't going to happen. I'd then see if I could get him to agree in advance to re-sign with the club for $1.5 - 2.0M after being non-tendered. He wouldn't likely make any more than that as a free agent after his disastrous season, anyway. It's a fair approach for both sides. If he agreed to it, I'd move forward that way. If he didn't agree to it, then I'd consider that bucket of balls that someone else is offering. But I don't think I'd risk going to arbitration and paying $3M for him at this point.
  25. If I thought he was going to repeat 2005, no doubt I'd be very much anti-Corey. Also, if the concern is how Baker will use him, then perhaps the focus should be on ridding the team of Dusty before the renewal can begin, rather than one of his misused players. I'm all for an improvement in CF, if they can find it. But I'm not currently 100% anti-Corey. A small part of me wants to see one more try (with Hairston ready to fill-in if need be). What I wouldn't want is dumping Corey and then going hard after a guy like Preston Wilson. I'm cool with Preston Wilson playing CF, just as long as one of these guys is playing corner OF: Manny Ramirez Brian Giles Pat Burrell Bobby Abreu Gary Sheffield Adam Dunn Cliff Floyd I'm not okay with gambling my season on Cliff Floyd staying healthy, myself. He, Aramis and Kerry can have a "race to the DL" contest if they're all on the team.
