  1. My question is: does that make Upton available for the right price? I'd send them a REALLY nice package to get Upton, who I think can move past his defensive issues and remain a SS.
  2. The ability to carry a fifth outfielder is entirely dependent upon whether or not the cubs carry seven relievers or six. But the fourth OF should be someone that can hit lefties and supply at least a little threat of a home run. I'd really like Restovich, myself.
  3. I see Theriot as a Ryan Freel type player with a bit less speed and much better defense. My fan-dom of him over the years is well documented in the archives around here. I actually wouldn't mind if the Cubs got him a few innings in the OF this year at Iowa and plugged him into the Jose Macias role for 2007. I'd love to have Greenberg on the team as a backup OF, but unless the Cubs go back to an 11 man staff, it just isn't going to happen.
  4. With this number of years behind him, I'd say that ARod is the second best shortstop of all time, behind only Honus. (I believe Pujols will end up being the best first baseman ever, but I want to see a few more years out of him before I put him ahead of Gehrig. After all, Jimmy Foxx was headed for being the greatest ever, too. Longevity matters) btw - am I the only one that would have moved Jeter to 2nd, left ARod at SS and then found a decent 3B to stick in there?
  5. Assuming the project I'm working on right now doesn't interfere, I'll be there the last week of ST.
  6. If Veal is ready, I don't have any problems with sending him to Daytona. If he's not ready, then it may still be okay if he has the type of personality that will respond favorably to a challenge. If he's not ready and he doesn't have that type of personality, then it's a problem.
  7. I though King Felix wasn't going to pitch for Venezuela. And Johann is traditionally very beatable until around May-June. The DR should let Liriano pitch.
  8. I just think he is fake, that is all. I never saw him around until they win, his comments make him sound like any random person trying to fit in. And his show sucks... I just think there are better celebrity fans than him. How dare I propose something different? Early 90's I went to Second City and Belushi showed up in a Cubs hat. I remember thinking that was pretty cool at the time since he was showing support for a team that stunk so bad.
  9. All Bill Murray, all the time.
  10. Source And people accuse Corey of not listening to his coaches.
  11. Just an opinion formed from the universal reactions of scouts who have watched Upton play. He's been under a microscope for years now and has impressed everyone who has reported upon seeing him play. Upton may not have yet played pro ball, but he's hardly imaginary. Young has holes in his game that minor league pitchers have been able to exploit. He's a very good prospect and I think he'll be fine in the long run. But I have a theory that players with that kind of strikeout rate in the minors adapt more slowly when they hit the bigs.
  12. I had fully re-enabled search and the board started crashing again. I've either got to remove more posts or reprogram the search mechanism to only retain certain keywords. I'm leaning towards the latter, but it will take time. Given that I'm working about 80-90 hours a week on my current project, I haven't had a whole bunch of spare time except on weekends, when I'm spending time with family. I will do it as soon as I am able.
  13. Because you put every prospect where they can succeed the best independently of who else you have at the position. When they get to the pros, you make adjustments at that point if they're blocked. Besides, Upton's going to be a better player than Young, who faces a difficult adjustment to the pro game given his strikeout rate.
  14. Upton's future is in the OF, probably Center. not if the rays are smart so yes, it's in the of They were talking about Justin Upton. I think BJ is going to stay at SS. But the DBacks are talking about switching Justin to CF right away to get him to the majors faster. Though my guess would be that they let him stick at short for this season to play his way into or out of the position.
  15. I don't think Atlanta is gonna be that good. They have a lot of questions. Can Chipper play 120 games? Can Andruw carry them again? Can they keep finding lightning in a bottle with guys like Langerhans, Laroche, McCann, and Sosa? How's the pitching without Mazzone? They'll still win the division (because it's a law or something), but I don't really see them as a 90+ win team. I really hope Chipper plays more than 120. He's a fun player to watch and one of the most consistent hitters in the game when healthy. They'll score enough and Hudson is a really, really good pitcher when he's not battling his obliques.
  16. I think when I look back at this year, I'll look to the same thing as last year -- the pitching health. If we get fully healthy years from Prior, Z & Wood I think we'll be very happy at the end of the year. If we don't get healthy years from those guys, I don't think the offense is going to matter much. The best reason I can think of for stressing "guys who can catch the ball" is to reduce the number of pitches those guys have to throw per game.
  17. I've just got a feeling about Hudson this year. I think he's going to rack up a whole bunch of W's and get a lot of consideration.
  18. Willis isn't as good as those three, despite his results of last year. If I were going to add to the list of Cy favorites, though, it would be Prior, Peavy, Pedro, Webb and Hudson.
  19. BA likes my prospects. 8) #6, 8, 10, 14, 21, 41, 54, 98 And Callis says BJ would have been #2 if he still qualified.
  20. If you look at stats in college baseball, what you find is that the overall league averages are about the same as pro ball. However, you have the great players of college ball stand out with much, much greater clarity than you have in the pro game. That is because the disparity of talent is so big between the best players there and the average players there. However, that does not mean that the best players in college ball are necessarily going to make a great player in MLB. It just means that when competing in a shallower talent pool they can stand out.
  21. If he convinced Jacque to use them, Juan could perform a great service to the team. ...by either: A) enhancing Jaque's performance or B) getting him baninated from the team My thinking exactly. Not a big Jacque fan? :D What was your first clue?
  22. I think it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Are you trying to put together a predicted 2006 NL-C all star team by the position they are going to play this year? Or are you trying to put together the best possible team using players form the NL-C at positions where they are capable of playing? Both are valid questions.
  23. Dude, but those pitchers only threw like 40 mph! And they only had like one or two pitches. Is it necessary to belittle the position of others like this to make a point? Mischaracterizing someone's argument so that you can demean it does nothing to make your position stronger.
