  1. Yeah, pretty much. I'd think things should move pretty quickly now.
  2. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Gamel is pretty much 1B or corner OF material at this point.
  3. Should have given him 3/15, imo.
  4. I'm asking questions, not espousing any theories. I think a manager and coaching staff can have some influence on the on-field results, but certainly not the kind of swing we saw in the Indians and White Sox from 2012 to 2013. And that's really far too small a sample size to infer much from, anyway (at least with regard to the influence of the coaching staff).
  5. Yeah, I definitely think the Yanks are bluffing a bit on that part. They're not going to completely pull their offer to Girardi just because he listens to the Cubs' offer.
  6. Saying "she's a pretty girl, I'm sure she'll be an attractive woman" would have a much less lecherous vibe to it, I think.
  7. Yeah, the most notable of the recent "up and coming" coaches (Stevens/Smart) were odd in that regard, but Alford is a reclamation project at best and a complete waste of time and resources at worst. He had his shot at Iowa and came away from that looking like a failure and a scumbag.
  8. Cubs apparently aren't interested despite him showing interest. Hadn't heard about that, then BN popped up on my Facebook feed with this article, for those who are interested... http://www.bleachernation.com/2013/10/04/obsessive-new-manager-watch-mike-maddux-reportedly-more-interested-this-time-around/ Gordon Wittenmyer ‏@GDubCub 55m Source: Despite a local report on Mike Maddux's interest in Cubs' job, he's not a candidate this time around. Not surprising. The emphasis seems to be on established track record this time. If the reports of the FO and Sveum getting of the same page are true, perhaps they want someone whose philosophy is more clearly established/evident.
  9. Even worse than my extremely low expectations thus far. Dan Guerrero is just an awful AD. That much is becoming quite clear. I mean it's UCLA, why all the settling for mediocrity? The more time passes since the school was elite, the less weight the name will carry with potential recruits. While I agree, in the last 8 years they produced 8 Final Fours and produced 2 of the top 10 players in the NBA. They aren't what they were, but I don't think anyone can be that now. Well no, obviously no one is going to be the Wooden era Bruins, but UCLA is a program that should be on the Duke/UK/Kansas level far more often than not. It just seems like it's been hit and mostly miss lately. And like the elites, they should be poaching the top coaches/coaching prospects in the sport, not hiring guys like Steve mf'ing Alford.

  11. Yeah, as much as I hate Dusty, I have little doubt he's telling the truth.
  12. I was really glad to see Stockton (I literally have no idea why he's still employed) was doing the STL series, which I wasn't going to watch anyway. Stockton is the worst. He has no earthly idea what the [expletive] he is talking about. And the way he says "error" makes me want to break something.
  13. Lol, he has to be trolling, right? I wish. When MLB network has he and Williams on set at the same time you can practically feel the ignorance radiating off of the TV.
  14. What is Maddon worth? Would you give up a Vogelbach to get him? It's a difficult question because all we can really judge a manager's worth by is on field results, and there are so many variables that go into that. But with Maddon, his results (doing so much with so little, almost all young, internally developed players) are so compelling that, yes, I would give up Vogelbach to get him. I'd probably give up another prospect in the 10-20 range along with him, too. I mean if we're talking about a player development manager, which is what we should want above all else at this point, Maddon has to be the gold standard.
  15. I don't have a lot of reason to like Girardi, but I don't see a compelling reason not to like him, either. Truth be told, I'd be all right with many of the names mentioned, and the only name I'd be thrilled about isn't available.
  16. I cannot believe they hired Steve Alford in 2013. 1999, maybe. Neither can I, it was pretty shocking. And I think Alford is going to regret it, too. He had a pretty good thing going in at UNM. All he had to do was keep the Lobos relevant and he'd have been in a pretty good place. I have a feeling his name is going to mud (all right, muddier) by the time he's done at UCLA. But yeah, UCLA isn't a school that needs to be hiring Steve [expletive] Alford.
  17. This turning into something of a disaster for UCLA, isn't it?
  18. And yet almost always quite predictable. It's an amazing thing, really.
  19. That's exactly what we said when Epstein was hired. No *way* he'd be hired just to gut the payroll and run an expansion-style rebuild. I could've made this post for you; I was so sure it was coming. Kyle being rote and predictable? Inconceivable.
  20. Knew that was coming as soon as I saw he had been waived.
  21. Do you think he'll have five more? You can't fall too much in love with what a guy has done in the past, especially when they're going to be on the wrong side of 30. I'd be in on him at 5-7 years, but beyond that and I'm not interested. His numbers dwarf what Soriano has posted, but so will his AAV. Theo has said they aren't interested in paying a premium for past performance that isn't likely to be repeated, so unless the market for Cano is surprisingly tepid, it's not going to happen.
  22. They have to request permission to talk to him if it's before Nov. 1st, which they would likely allow. If there's really mutual interest, it shouldn't take long.
  23. Vanilla and boring is not exactly a negative attribute. I didn't think "vanilla and boring" when I thought about Dale, I thought "stupid". Not in regard to what he did, but just in general. I was kind of surprised the he was hired, I figured Jed/Theo would have preferred someone more...cerebral. That said, I didn't have a burning desire to see him fired, but I'd definitely prefer someone who doesn't come off like a neanderthal (or drunk/brain damaged). Articulate, at least, would be nice.
  24. So... It's our fault were losers but we can't play with a manager who is a loser, so he's collateral damage for our failings and/or strategy to suck. Ok. So he was probably always a placeholder. I wouldn't call him a placeholder. More of an audition. If he'd turned out to be the kind of manager the FO wanted I'm sure he'd have stuck around. He didn't. I agree. How hard was it for him to manage the last week knowing he was getting fired? This happens all the time with managers/coaches in pro sports. I'd bet 90% of the time they know they're getting fired well in advance of the axe falling.
  25. That statement makes it clear (imo) that they did not like how Dale handled the young players, and that was the primary reason for the firing.
