  1. THAT IS A THING THAT HAPPENED? Yeah, I seem to recall this, though the memory is vague.
  2. My daughter was eight when I started the site. Now she's a college freshman. My daughter had just turned two when I joined, now she's in junior high.
  3. I don't live in Cards country or anything, so there aren't many of their fans to deal with. But the guy who owns/runs my favorite grocery store is one. One time I was looking for a second job, and I applied at the grocery store (it's a health food-type store, and I could use the discount, plus he gives his employees full benefits, even if they're part time). So this guy, who seemed like a nice old dude, says halfway through the interview "so your're a Cubs fan, huh? (I may be the most obvious/visible fan of a team in the whole town, I am constantly adorned in one type of Cubs apparel or another) I'm a die-hard Redbirds fan", to which I replied "well, we all have our faults, I guess." I was clearly joking, but his demeanor changed, and I did not get the job. Starting that fall, he started wearing an old Cards cap during the playoffs, which I had never seen him do previously. Not only that, but every time he saw me, he'd adjust it/tip it at me, and give me a smirk. Yesterday I went to the store and he tipped a nice new 5150 at me and chuckled. The moral of the story is [expletive] the [expletive] Cardinals. They can go to [expletive] hell.
  4. every baseball stadium in america is built out of steel and concrete. what materials are you suggesting wrigley be rebuilt with, exactly? Unobtanium
  5. I went to high school with a guy who killed his own child by shaking it. He was always soft spoken and seemed cool, but a few years later I picked up a paper and saw he had been convicted of murder for it. It was kind of jarring. You just never know, I guess. I can't fathom it. When my daughter was a baby/toddler I handled her like she was made of glass.
  6. They should lock the guy in a room with AP and ignore what follows. EDIT: I read a story earlier that implied that Peterson had previously known about his son before I read the story above. Either way.
  7. Yeah, I'm with N&G here. Saying he should be "held accountable" clearly implies some kind of punitive action. I'm pretty sure everyone has noticed his picks. In lieu of firing, maybe a pillory or stocks could be erected outside of Halas Hall where Emery could be shamed and pelted with rotten food.
  8. I don't know who that is, but I'd bet he's related to Tom Crean somehow
  9. This is why I said I'd fire him. If you look only at the W/L over his tenure, you'd say that he maintained a winning team, and was probably doing a good job. But if you look at where the club was when he took over, the resources he was given and how he allocated them, and then the results (and where the team is today), you can see he pretty clearly screwed the pooch.
  10. It sure as hell worked really nicely for a while there. Clearly it did, but Amaro's fiscal irresponsibility is going to make it difficult to sustain.
  11. Three division championships and a pennant? God forbid. You really think that those were the expectations of the fanbase/ownership/management? I sure as hell don't, and that window is now cemented shut. And will open right back up in a year or two if they continue to willingly spend money. I wouldn't be so sure. Even with Halladay coming off the books, Amaro has concentrated a lot of payroll into a handful of players, many of whom are old, declining, injury prone or some combination thereof. Lee is probably the only one who is movable. And the problem now, even if you're willing to spend, is what are you going to spend it on? The days of being able to overhaul your team through FA are over (or at least on hiatus). And their farm system is nothing special, either. I think it's going to be 3-4 years before the Phils are a consistent threat again. There's being willing to pay for talent, and then there's spending like an idiot. Amaro has done much of the latter, and he's going to be paying for it for at least 2-3 more years. In fact, if I were Phillies' ownership, I'd fire him.
  12. Hendry told Sandberg he had to pay his dues in the minors then hired Quade over Sandberg after those dues had been paid. Theo ruled out Sandberg right away using the excuse of lack of big league experience. I'm guessing the real reason Theo wouldn't touch Sandberg at the time is because it was very possible that the fans would have either turned on Theo for giving Sandberg the rebuilding rosters or it would have hurt Sandberg's legacy and Theo didn't want any part of that potential mess. Can you imagine the outcry right now if we were replacing Sandberg instead of Sveum with all the people crying about how Sandberg never got a fair shot. I'm pretty sure the primary reason Theo didn't want Sandberg is because their ideologies were incompatible. The potential for a mess like you've described could well have been an ancillary factor, though.
  13. I'm in favor of putting it in a sticky. In every forum. DO IT
  14. Truth, every word of it.
  15. If the Cards were willing to pay that, I'd almost like to see it happen. Almost. That's an absolute haul, a good chunk of their near-term rotation and two of their three best young position players. As other worldly as Trout is, I'd have to think the Cards would lose a good chunk of WAR in that exchange. Then again, others would probably magically ascend from the minors to fill the gaps. Pixie dust and all that nonsense.
  16. They should begin construction with Tunney added to the foundation.
  17. It'll never happen, but I wonder what it would cost the Cardinals? If I were Dipoto and the Cards called, My asking price would start with Miller, Martinez, Wong and Taveras. And I'd want another couple of their top 10 prospects on top of that. At least.
  18. After he was canned, Sveum was bemoaning not having opportunity to be here when these prospects arrive, so it's not as if it's an afterthought to these guys. And I think it's entirely possible that these kids start showing up in late 2014-early 2015. Like I said, it's certainly not some kind of trump card or lynch pin to their sales pitch , but if I were looking at the job, "there's a ton of talent in the upper levels" sure would sound a lot better to me than "there's not much help on the way", particularly when the big league team is so bad right now. It's definitely not a non-factor. I mean why wouldn't you be at least intrigued by the fact that the system is positioned to dump a bunch of talent in your lap over the next few years?
  19. gross I hope that isn't true Yeah, what an idiot, being all happy knowing that our top prospects are going to be awesome major leaguers. Makes me wanna puke, what with his confidence that we'll have a better future than the stinking Yankees. Bring back MacPhail/Hendry, they are true pros. yeah, on a day where two NL central teams played for the right to go to the NLCS and the cubs were apparently spurned by their top managerial choice, I would be kinda grossed out by theo walking around with his chest puffed out about a 19 year old's 4-5 day in a glorified scrimmage. I mean, i'm pumped about the farm system too, but I bet girardi gives zero [expletive] about albert almora. and I understand that if theo did say this (which I really doubt) he was likely joking. 1) It wasn't just Almora 2) I pretty much guarantee you that the Cubs having the best collection of positional talent in the minors is very much of interest to whoever they pitch the job to. It's not the end all or anything, but it's a big selling point, make no mistake about that. And of course Theo (if he said it) was at least half joking.
  20. I honestly can't choose between the Dodgers and Red Sox. I'll pull for the A's or Tigers in the ALCS and despise the Cardinals, but fair weather LA band wagoneers versus Boston fans...guh. Tough call. I'd prefer the Tiger or A's, but I'd take any of them over the Cards or Dodgers, and it couldn't be particularly close. The Cards are the Cards, and I loathe bandwagoners.
  21. I'm officially a fan of the AL this year, it appears.
  22. not necessarily after soler was solid but not eye poppingly spectacular in high A while puig made MLB his bitch for 3 months in swaggerific fashion To be fair, he "made MLB his bitch" for about one month, and was merely pretty good after that.
  23. If that's the case then they're idiots because this was completely out of the Cubs' hands. There was nothing they could do with Girardi until the World Series is over, it's not their fault he opted to re-up with the Yankees before the championship series even begin. If what we've heard about the Cubs making it known that they'd be willing to top any NYY offer is true, there's absolutely nothing more they could have done.
  24. I think a very, very strong case could be made that the Cubs have a better near to mid term outlook than the Yankees do. And apparently this came down to family/location, not the job itself.
