  1. and theriot, and ramirez hitting great and playing most of the games, and hoffpauir and koyie hill, and heilman and marmol and lilly and marshall. And Marmol being hurt, Theriot with his usual crap brand of baserunning and defense. Lilly has pitched pretty much to expectation, as with Marshall. And aside from his homer in Milwaukee (which was a loss in the end), Hill hasn't contributed a whole lot. Hell, he didn't even play for a week. Hoffpauir has been good, I'll give you that. But the bad things that have happened to this point far outweigh the positives. I don't think too many non-neurotic people envisioned the Cubs playing as poorly as they have to this point. Even though they got off to an 8-4 start before the recent bed crapping, the Cubs hadn't really played that well at all.
  2. I'd hardly consider his one decent season a basis for expectation. With the rotation they have now, I can't imagine them maintaining anything close to their current pace for much longer. If the Cubs pull their heads out of their arses, it's conceivable to me that the Cards could be 8-9 GB by the time Carp returns. Let's not forget that aside from Fuku and Sori, this is pretty darned close to as bad as we realistically could have imagined for this point in the season. Soto's been nonexistent, Fontenot hasn't hit, Bradley has been a complete non-contributor, Z hasn't been good, Lee has been bad, Aramis has been battling his back, the bullpen has been bad, Dempster has looked more like old Dempster, everyone and their cousin has been injured, and even the bench has been bad. Not that life has been perfect in STL, but everyone not named Ankiel and Greene has hit, and losing Carp seems to have made them better. I am not dismissing the Cards, but I think it's a whole lot more likely that a few of the things that have gone bad for the Cubs correct themselves than things continue like this for the Cardinals.
  3. All four of those pitches looked like balls to me. Not thrilled with Reed's approach there.
  4. But who expected him not to, really? If we're going to waste time booing every sucky ex-Cub who sucked, we're gonna be really hoarse. Booing underachievers in one thing, but booing all the dregs that Hendry ever brought in is just stupid. I think booing in general is stupid, but saying it's okay to boo certain guys but not okay to boo glendon Rusch seems pretty stupid to me. People get booed when they tie up a considerable portion of payroll and a roster spot and aren't good. I get upset when my expectations aren't met, personally. When someone like Rusch comes into a game, I expect him to suck. I don't feel compelled to boo when someone sucks who every reasonable person would expect to suck. If they make too much money, my beef is with Hendry. Maybe I'm crazy.
  5. I agree, but I can understand the average fan doing it. I blame Dusty for LaTroy's issues. He was proven setup guy who had been historically terrible at closing. He was brought in to be a setup guy. Dusty put him in a position that he had repeatedly proven he couldn't handle. And yes, his numbers were good even in spite of this. I was furious when watching Hawkins blow all those saves, but my vitriol was directed more at Baker.

  7. They even booed Harden when Bruce got the single to drive in the second run. :banghead: :flame: I remember when Theriot got booed after his first ML AB, which was a PH AB at that.
  8. I think you're way off. The fanbase, if anything, has changed for the better. They expect more from the Cubs, and aren't just happy to sit there, and enjoy the beer and sunshine, regardless of the on field income. If someone is booing Latroy Hawkins, that means they paid enough attention over the past few years to actually know that Latroy played for (and sucked) with the Cubs. What you're saying is that you liked the stupid fans that weren't even watching the game. Booing is part of the game. It has been for a long time. Don't suck, and you won't get booed. What did Rusch and Hairston do to deserve it? Hawkins, sure, but not those two. Just mediocre players being exactly what you would expect them to be, I don't see the cause for angst. I think some fans are doing it just to do it. My point wasn't to say that the fans booing them are intelligent. Just that they're more attentive than the fanbase was pre-2003. If you dislike booing, fine. But to say that the fanbase has changed for the worse? I think that's just not true. But personally, I think booing is just part of being a professional athlete. Booing people who deserve it is one thing, but they're booing everyone. It just makes us look ignorant, not attentive.

  10. I'm sure the juice helped Sammy's HR totals, but laying off the pitch down and off the plate and taking balls on the outer half to the opposite field are what made him a different player. Prior to '98 Sammy could be made a fool of by throwing stuff outside (and particularly down), a la Soriano. His selectivity is what made him great. If Sori could condition himself to just let breaking balls low and away go, he could put up some scary numbers. I'm not holding my breath, though.
  11. And neither of them are A.J. Pierzynski, so they have that going for them.
  12. No. You can say what you want about Bonds, I dont think his effort has ever been in question. I dont think you can make the same claim about Sheffield That makes him unprofessional. Bonds is still a bigger douche. Shef has his issues for sure, but Barry is a deluded, narcissistic, racist, ego maniacal piece of crap. Who is 2x better than Sheffield ever wished to be. Racist? lol. Yeah, racist. And this isn't about who is better. Being great doesn't diminish what a spectacular ass Barry Bonds is.

  14. Well, he asked for it. And fwiw, the comments sections on you tube are the strongest argument for eugenics.
  15. It's more than baseball. The issue is getting that worked up over something that is not really that important in the grand scheme and more importantly, something that you have absolutely no control over. It's hard and sometimes it really ruins my day (or about a month after the 2003 season ended), but I have never in my life approached what this guy does, and if I did, I sure as hell wouldn't want anyone to see it. The bolded part is the big reason people get worked up in the first place. BINGO But it's also what makes it so stupid. At some point you just have condition yourself mentally to let it go. Spending your life agonizing over things you can't help would be a miserable existence. Especially if you are a Cubs fan.

  17. no comment. It's just too fitting that she's wearing an Iowa Hawkeyes shirt.shes evil, and evil, and likes EVIL. whats not to like? Fixed. Now someone wearing a White Sox garment needs to show up and I'll be totally convinced.

  19. Population size matters to a degree, mostly because the larger the population, the higher the percentage of minorities, generally speaking. For a number of reasons, minority populations are higher in more urban areas. And greater numbers leads to more interracial exposure, which leads to a relatively higher degree of tolerance. It just happens that Chicago seems to have resisted full integration more than the other big cities. I used to live in Hyde Park, so I have seen first hand just how stark the contrasts within the city (and even a very small area) can be. I also spent time in NYC, and didn't get the same feeling, at least not to the extend I did in Chicago. In smaller cities, it is easier to shove the minorities off into a corner and ignore them, so to speak.
  20. Not even close. Among the really big boys (NYC, LA, Chicago, Houston, etc.) which is worse? I'm not sure what major means, but let's just go with cities with professional sports franchises. Just off the top of my head Atlanta New Orleans Houston Memphis Boston Philly Dallas Detroit Cincinnati Columbus Jacksonville Miami That doesn't even include places like Baton Rouge, Lousiville, Grand Rapids, and many other major metropolitan areas, But the really sad fact is that most anywhere you could through a dart at that has a population greater than 100,000 will be terribly segregated if there are a mix of races. I was referring more to the really big cities. Places like Memphis and Columbus don't really qualify. And I would argue that Houston is more segregated, along with a couple others on your list. How much time have you spent in Chicago? You expect it to a degree in most places, but not so much in cities with populations way up in the millions. At least not so much clear segregation and overt racism.
  21. Not even close. Among the really big boys (NYC, LA, Chicago, Houston, etc.) which is worse?
  22. Yeah, the racial dynamics in Chicago are nowhere near as developed as in places like NYC or even Los Angeles. That's not to say things in those cities are peachy, but Chicago is very compartmentalized.
  23. Stop that. LOL'ing about Carp's injury with Harden on the mound is bad juju.
  24. He threw mostly entirely changeups that inning so i honestly wasn't paying much attention. The Rockies guys said his FB was between 92-95 in that half of the inning.
  25. True, but never underestimate Dave Duncan's ability to shine a turd.
