  1. I think the Padres have a legitimate playoff shot, if Cashner stays healthy, Gyorko rebounds, Spangenberg breaks out and Alonso discovers some power. Middlebrooks doing something would help, but going to SD isn't generally a move that gets your offensive career going. Either way, I think the Padres are jockeying with the Giants for second place in the NL West. The problem is that L.A. may run away with it and it's a distinct possibility that none of the wild cards come from that division.
  2. I'm beginning to wonder if Woodbury is Moe Howard reincarnated.
  3. Yeah, this almost certainly started as a tactic to simply get more money out of San Diego, but some of the competitors may have gotten a little more serious than the Padres anticipated. It's hard to say, but if Shields to SD was such a certainty, it seems like it should have happened by now.
  4. Norris is in no way "a serious hole at C." Also exactly ONE player in their starting 8 is 30+ (he is exactly 30) and that is Matt Kemp. Please stop. You need to do your research. Quentin and Venable are 30+. Norris had 2 HRS in the 2nd half of 2014 and now you put him San Diego's huge park. His defense was so bad, GSoto started for him the playoffs against KC. Please go away. Quentin and Venable are going to start?
  5. I noticed Harry before the 90's, but knowing what he was before makes what he became seem even worse. 89/90 was the tail end of "good Harry". As far as Kasper goes, I think the only thing tempering his disappointment has been that he was on board with "the process". If it were a no light at the end of the tunnel scenario like the 90's was, I think his attitude would have been much different over the past few years. Even so, I've heard a ton of disappointment and frustration from Len, but he's a pro, so he stifled a lot of it, imo.
  6. And it owned I hate to agree with mojo on this, but Harry really was just a hot mess for the last 5-10 years, getting progressively worse each year. It wasn't charming by the end, it was embarrassing. Hearing his broadcasts now evokes some warm childhood nostalgia for sure, but listening to him in the 90's just made me wish for it to end. What Harry was during that time was a perfectly apt embodiment of the whole "lovable losers" identity. It may sound like heresy to some people, but there it is. Everything about the Cubs in the 90's made me wish for it to end. That wasn't Harry's fault. Oh, I wasn't blaming it on him by any means. But he didn't help, either. That he was such a mess just echoed the abysmal product on the field. It was a comprehensive disaster of a decade. The only glimmer of light in the 90's was Sosa, and that was at the end.
  7. Even if Baez completely flames out, which I think is a distinct possibility (if not probability), you still have Alcantara/La Stella for 2B. As has been mentioned, Bryant's OF potential and experience (albeit limited) combined with Russell's IF fielding ability superiority makes moving Kris to the OF the most likely and sensible move. Obviously you want to keep potent IF bats on the IF to maximize their value, but if circumstances dictate that one of them has to move to the OF, Bryant looks to be the guy, imo. Of course much of this depends on how the LF platoon and the 2B options perform this year. If the platoon is doing well and Arismendy and Baez are struggling, then Russell to 2B makes more sense.

  9. Given his age, an accident is the most likely cause of death if not natural causes.
  10. I think anyone who was really familiar with him knows that there was no reason feel anything negative about him. If you didn't like Ernie Banks, you'd have to be a cold son of a bitch. For whatever reason, I find this far more upsetting than Santo's passing, even though Ernie at least got to experience his induction into the HoF.
  11. [expletive], what a major bummer. I know he wasn't young, but part of me really felt like he'd be there when it finally happened. Depressing.
  12. Eh, I don't like the gold. I don't like gold anywhere, though. Or cream. I love the M's regular unis. They have one of the best color schemes, imo.
  13. I read that Papelbon will only waive his no trade if the Brewers pick up his 2016 option ($13MM).
  14. What is Lake's appeal? He's completely changed his stance at the plate and has been a walk machine in winter ball. I'm not convinced it's going to have any real effect on his MLB performance since he's still striking out a ton, but it changes the possibility of him being more than worthless to non-zero. hitting for significantly less power too Is that possible? He had an ISO of .140 last year, which is right about average. Hitting for power is one thing he did...not abysmally.
  15. Not thrilled about the inclusion of Valbuena, since losing him reduces the impact that Fowler's plate discipline brought to the lineup. That said, Fowler in CF is more valuable to the team than Valbuena at 3B, especially with the potential glut of IFs. I doubt Theo & Jed were keen to give Luis up, but if that's what it took, I'm all right with it.
  16. That was glorious. Also, I made a couple ill-advised bets with Green Bay fans at halftime, and the Seahawks saved me from my own foolishness.
  17. They're keeping the SEC out of the NC game, they've done their job.
  18. If Alabama wins, he might be their MVP for the game.
  19. If OSU holds on that'll make the SEC West 0-2 versus the B1G and 2-5 in bowl games overall, no? That'll toss a wrench in the hype machine.
  20. This is glorious
  21. I hope the Ducks keep their foot on the gas.
  22. The Padres are gonna bring in a haul when they trade half of these guys.
  23. That seems the obvious answer, but iirc, the Mariners don't want to trade Walker for Upton. They may have changes their minds, we'll see.
  24. My guess is the Rangers. Upton would have a hell of a contract year in Arlington, too.
