  1. I don't know why anyone would think that. They are 100% certain that Bryant is going to play a position he has never played even though he just spent an entire minor league season at 3B? That doesn't make any sense. It makes sense if they r trying to win games and maximize value. Valbuena 3B+Bryant LF > Bryant 3B+Coghlan/Gomes platoon The Cubs aren't going to be that short-sighted with their top prospect. If Bryant can play 3B, which they seem to think he can, he is much more valuable there than in LF. Again, it's not just a matter of Bryant's WAR being more valuable at 3B, the question is will the net value of Bryant at 3B + whoever in LF be more than that of Valbuena at 3B and Bryant in LF. Unless we acquire someone better than Jonny Gomes, the answer to that question looks to be no.
  2. I don't know why anyone would think that. They are 100% certain that Bryant is going to play a position he has never played even though he just spent an entire minor league season at 3B? That doesn't make any sense. It's left field. You don't need experience to play it. You do need some to play it competently. Which is why he'll get LF reps in ST, and getting him more experience will be the pretense for keeping him in Iowa for a couple weeks to start the season.
  3. http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lyt6q89igv1qdato8o1_250.gif Yes, this. Nostalgia colors our memory, but Caray was a hot mess, there's no two ways about it.
  4. I know some don't like what he brings to the table but he's only 28, has been up and down enough that he's worth a gamble on the upside of his talent (and wouldn't cost much because of the down year), and if they decide to use Baez to get a bigger piece would allow the Cubs to move Alcantara back to 2B where his bat plays a whole lot better (and where I'm sure his defense is better, too) I have no problem with taking a chance on Rasmus for the right price. Yeah, he's been up and down, but he has two 4 WAR seasons and as you said, is only 28. Maybe he'd take less from us for a chance to get back at the Cards, lol.
  5. I sincerely doubt we're interested after adding Lester. But it never hurts to hint we might have interest. It can only drive up the price for our rivals. Yeah, I don't think Theo & Co. were very enthusiastic about the prospect of giving up the talent it will take to get him before they signed Lester, now I think there's a near zero chance the'll make a serious run at him.
  6. I don't think there was much doubt that this was Loria's thinking. I know that's exactly what I thought his idea was, that Stanton will opt out after one of his patented fire sales. How many of the players they are acquiring this offseason do you think will still be on the team 2-3 years from now? The entire thing is a sham, and Loria is an unscrupulous piece of [expletive]; that's not a revelation. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, and I was pretty shocked that Stanton didn't see through the pretense of Loria's "commitment". It is somewhat surprising that he would come out and say what he did.
  7. Noticed that the first time, and made it me literally lol at work.
  8. Didn't Theo essentially tell Wittenmeyer he didn't know what the [expletive] he was talking about on some issue while on Kap's show once? Gordo seems to have a particular ax to grind, though as David has said, that has been the M.O. at the Sun Times for so long that they probably don't know how to turn it off.
  9. I should hope that they would. I have some friends back up in Eastern Iowa who are none too happy about this, to say the least.
  10. OK. I'd take Johnson to fill in the role Olt played last year, but it would be to a lesser extent because the team is better. I'd still try for an Upton + Upton trade because it better fits our roster needs, and having B.J. beyond next season couldn't hurt if you try and extend Justin.
  11. Any conversation that leads to hockey has gone terribly wrong.
  12. His numbers are undeniable, but the obvious issue is that he can't stay on the field. And like CarGo, their ownership loves him. Word has been that no talks involving Tulo ever get past the very early stages. I suspect that for all that inquire, the risk is simply too great to pay the price that would be necessary.
  13. Yeah, that's what I thought I typed. Oops.
  14. Do they really care who they're starting at 3B after trading away 2 of their best players? They also signed Markakis and made a half-hearted run at Lester, so it's difficult to tell exactly what they think of themselves at the moment. The Markakis move is really puzzling when viewed in the context of everything else they're doing. I don't think the Lester "flirtation" was anything other than a cursory check-in with a local guy. So yeah, trying to assess their full intent is difficult, other than they seem to be otherwise shedding payroll. That said, given what the Marlins have done, it's going to be even harder for them to justify not just seeing this rebuild (that's what it appears that they are doing?) through. But I would think that they would be more interested in prospects than a guy like Valbuena. Probably more even in a guy like Travis Wood, since they seem more interested in pitching. I still think taking on B.J. might help. Would the Braves go for Wood/Alcantara/Blackburn/Coghlan for Upton and Upton deal, provided the Cubs pick up B.J.'s contract? Given the uncertainty of Justin beyond 2015, that's about as far as I would go, except maybe adding another 15-30 type pitching prospect. I think it would work out; you could utilize (hide) B.J. in a platoon with Sweeney in CF, and you have your LF power bat for 2015.
  15. It's interesting that all of the local guys seem pretty certain that the Cubs are basically done at this point outside of adding Gomes and Ross. The national guys, on the other hand, have been fairly consistent with the reports that the Cubs are still looking for a big outfield bat. Hopefully the national guys are right. I don't think the local guys are as connected as they were under the previous regime, and I don't think that they know much more than the national media. It may just be me, but the only Chicago media guy who seems to know anything is that asshat Kaplan.
  16. I don't think Wittenmeyer has any reliable sources and just throws [expletive] at the wall at this point.
  17. Yeah, that system is seriously tapped out.
  18. So they traded Lester for Porcello. Obviously not as simple as that due to contacts and future value but interesting. That rotation isn't going to get them very far unless there are some bounceback performances.
  19. So it's Kemp, Federowicz and 30MM to SD and Grandal to LA, apparently.
  20. I wanted McCarthy pretty bad, but that he got four years surprises me.
  21. Didn't Richards blow out his elbow? It was his knee, iirc.
  22. Only if we don't have to give up Bryant or Russell. I'd be far less hesitant to give them up for Trout than Harper.
  23. Giving 4 years to McCarthy is some kind of win? It's a high risk contract that he only gave out because he has a massive payroll to work with. It's certainly not some sort of shrewd move.
  24. If it's Gomes or Ross, I can live with that. Just not both. I might prefer Gomes, tbh. Not that he isn't terrible, as a bench OF, he wouldn't be displacing anyone, really. I can live with one but only because I'm bargaining in a "please don't do both" way. Well, yeah.
