  1. I can't see Pena accepting. He signed a 1-year "pillow" deal to prove 2010 Pena wasn't the real Pena and to a large degree, he succeeded. He'll be looking for a 2-3 year deal, and he'll get it from someone. I really like Carlos, but you can't hold on to him with the options available. It's too bad he can't play 3B.
  2. I think it can look good, like the example Vance posted. I don't think I'd like to see that as a regular uni, though. I actually love when the Bears do the navy/navy combo. It's my favorite look for them.
  3. He wouldn't help immediately, but Jorge Soler wouldn't be a bad Cuban consolation prize if the Cubs miss out on Cespedes. But Sizemore is pretty intriguing and I really hope the Cubs can nab him.
  4. Wait, you guys are arguing about the short/long term ramifications of trading Marmol? Trading Marmol is a no-brainer,imo. Trading him does little or nothing to hurt the team right now, as there are in-house candidates to replace him, because he was fairly bad at his job last year and because his arm may well be ready to fall off. Virtually anything we get for him will be a net gain. Trading Marmol and trading a guy like Garza are completely different scenarios that need to be assessed differently. Just because you apply a line of thinking to the trade of one asset does not mean it has to be applied as the approach to all trades. And yes, the notion that Theo and Jed are at the mercy of whoever calls and makes an offer is ridiculous. They can and likely would seek out a trade partner who matched up well.
  5. This "you can either spend in FA or focus on player development" garbage going around is some seriously stupid [expletive]. Does no one see what Theo did in Boston? That's right, both. It's what the Yankees do. It's what the Phillies have done. It's what the really good teams do. If what people are hoping the Cubs can become are a team like the Rays, they're morons. Not that the Rays are bad, but the Cubs have resources the Rays can only dream of. The Rays are a great example of a well run small market team. The Cubs are a large market team with a ton of assets. Would the Rays operate the way they do if they had a $130MM payroll? Not a chance in hell. And the notion that Theo and Co. should wait for the perfect moment when the system is turning out the right players to pounce on the perfect complementary FA players who may or may not be available is patently stupid. That's the sort of approach that'll have you sitting around with your thumb up your butt and accomplishing very little.
  6. The most prolific corpse-producing team in the majors. I'm a little disheartened that Albert would only be of use to the Cubs in 2012, though. He must have a "use by" date stamped on him somewhere.
  7. http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/7247477/bobby-valentine-meet-boston-red-sox-soon-according-source This tells me that Larry Lucchino has taken this thing over. Ben Cherington's going to be a puppet.
  8. Its a [expletive] bleacher report rumor. Stop yourself. It has absolutely no basis in reality. I'm not basing anything off the bleacher report article. Perhaps I worded that wrong. I meant that it would make sense that the Cubs would be interested in trading for Loney, given that he's a lefty and a nice defensive first baseman. You know who else is a lefty and a nice defensive first baseman? Carlos Pena. Plus he takes walks and hits for power. Trading for Loney would make no sense.
  9. He's been an elite starter for two seasons now and has just 700 MLB innings on his arm. He's as good a risk as you're going to find on the pitching FA market. He's been very good, but I wouldn't pay him like an ace. I'd give him five years, but not for more than 15-16MM per year.
  10. This is the first I've heard of it.
  11. Maybe, maybe not. Pujols and Reyes are two of the top 3-4 FA this offseason. And even if it is just because they're Latin, it's not as bad as what Omar Minaya was doing with the Mets, imo.
  12. We really don't need to be wasting money on Varitek or Hill. Keep Soto and make Castillo the backup on the cheap. Castillo or Clevenger, whichever. I can't conceive of a reason Hill would be on the team next year with Jimbo out.
  13. To take it a step further, I'd shop him (not aggressively). What I saw last year leads me to believe he's damaged goods. If the market for closers is hot, I'd definitely try and cash in. We have in house options to replace him.
  14. I disagree - interviewing him would have given away the fact that it was just a charade. Theo doesn't need to interview a guy he's worked with for years to know how that guy thinks. Yes, I heard Theo say that too. Well it makes sense. I would find a Francona interview to be a waste of time regardless of what Theo said. Why would you interview a guy you know backwards and forwards? Only for show.
  15. Like I said, a lost season may be a really devastating blow to the NBA. You're right, they're not the NFL, not even remotely close. And I may be wrong, but I was under the impression the NBAPA had a pretty favorable deal. This whole thing is an exercise in stupidity.
  16. And with that Kaplan initiates [insert depraved solo sexual act here].
  17. I was thinking of that last night, when I was waiting for one of the Lions d-line to pull out a gun and shoot Cutler.
  18. It is odd, seeing as how it was said that they wouldn't be able to sign any FA until the sale process was complete. Obviously Kemp isn't a FA, but you'd think the no-FA thing was meant to prevent McCourt from committing resources that won't be his. Then again, MLB may think that locking up the team's best player asset will make the team more attractive to bidders. A lot of mixed messages being sent, though.
  19. Funny, because he said in an interview yesterday he wouldn't even attempt to be as funny as Maddux was.
  20. that has been discussed by some media members. I heard it on the radio while driving back from bears/eagles, plus some others. Of course if even the media knew, that makes the football staff and admin look much, much more guilty.
  21. I know he tends to hold the ball, but for people to just dismiss the number he takes as a result of that obviously aren't watching enough. He's definitely not perfect, but if you give Jay a solid line and a legit #1 and people will be referring to him as an elite QB.
  22. Bayless only like Cutler because they both went to Vanderbilt. yeah, i knew that. which also means he probably watches cutler play and then generates opinions from there instead of formulating his usual lazy analysis, which seems to permeate the boo ya network, even and especially among the former players. I wanted to strangle Mangini the other morning when he was arguing with Bayless that the primary reason Cutler takes so much abuse is because he holds the ball too long. I don't care for Skip, but I really hate Mangini. How can you be so smug while being so wrong?
  23. you want them to get their lynchin' ropes and rassle up a posse? If enough people wanted him gone for long enough, he'd be gone. A posse isn't necessary.
  24. Yeah, but how much of that rage is bypassing Paterno on it's way Schultz, Spanier and Curley? Quite a bit, I'd guess. Don't forget the receivers coach/ eyewitness, who will apparently be on the sidelines Saturday. Sure, it'd be easier to place all the blame on the faceless suits rather than to assign appropriate amounts to the local heroes.
