What's this have to do with anything? Other than irrationally making Cubs fans scared of signing good free agents? Pure frustration. What I do not understand is if Ricketts gave Theo an open checkbook, why is he not making a serious play for either Pujols or Fielder? We have a glaring hole there. These guys help now and in the future. What makes you think he isn't? (More in regards to Fielder...as for Pujols, you can see where a 10 year deal might not be in the best interest) I hope he is. As I said, I thought we'd land one of the two and if we get neither knowing Theo and Jed have Tom's blessing to go after any player they want, It would be very disappointing. I won't be disappointed if someone else gives them 8-10 year deals. If someone gives Fielder a five year deal and he accepts, sure. But I won't fault Jed/Theo for not being stupid. -

And if they don't win in the next couple years (especially if they do), they'll trade these pieces off. I'm not the least bit envious of Miami. How could you be envious of a team owned by Jeffrey Loria? -
It's not just you. It's HUGE. If you're going to go ostentatious, you go all out. I'm surprised it doesn't have LEDs sewn into it. Honestly, the whole scheme is just disgusting. I can wait to see their HR statue/abomination.

The rational Cards fans I have talked to today are saying exactly this. This is the Cardinals. Pujols will take the big deal for ego purposes, then retire after five years just as his skills start to erode, taking them off the hook. Start to erode? That ship has sailed. I'd bet he'll be an .800 OPS hitter five or six years from now.

The rational Cards fans I have talked to today are saying exactly this. It's payback for all those years they got the best him him for well below fair market value. And it puts an end to all the "Albert loves STL so much he will overlook the money" nonsense. I also think that the Cards brass putting off an extension/expecting another hometown discount has gotten them to this point.

I'd be all right with a Stewart/Baker platoon at 3B. Headley would be better, though.

I'd much prefer it if Pujols left the Cards, but the price tag has gotten to the point where they'll be hurting themselves long term (barring a really creative deferment structure) by re-signing him.

Ryan was gushing over Fielder and the possibility of having him in the Rangers' lineup on Hot Stove last night. I don't by that they're not in. Nor do I buy that Seattle is the frontrunner. Given the conflicting, scattershot reporting over the past few days, I think we have to draw our own conclusions.

I don't know how many more times this needs to be said, but I'll quote it just so it appears one more time. The list of reasons the Cubs were bad the last two seasons, in order of importance: 1) The complete, horrific failure of the mid-2000s drafts. 2) The complete, horrific failure of the mid-2000s drafts. 3) The complete, horrific failure of the mid-2000s drafts. ... ... ... 998)The complete, horrific failure of the mid-2000s drafts. 999) Some bad luck in 2011 1000) Overpaying by a bit for some good but not elite free agents and contract extensions. Or the need to fill most positions via free agency/trade because the drafts were so bad. Combine that with the fact that Hendry wasn't a very good talent evaluator and you get an inconsistent mess.

Apparently the Rox and Padres are discussing Huston Street. I think the Cubs should step in and try and swing a Marmol for Headley deal before they get another closer. I think Marmol is probably the Cubs best chip in a potential deal, provided Theo and Jed want Headley. -
Albert's "down" season had an effect in and of itself, but it had the added effect of making people (myself included) take a closer look at his numbers, which have actually been in decline for 3-4 years. Combine that with his age and I think you get some reason. Frankly I'm still a bit surprised teams are still willing to give him 10 years.

He probably thinks we should sign him and give him to the Red Sox for free as Theo compensation. Seriously, how does a Red Sox beat reporter get this info? My guess is there isn't a single reporter anywhere who truly has a clue as to what's going on tonight. Anyone in the building with a Twitter account suddenly has inside info.

Don't they already have a 1b in Morales/Trumbo? I think Trunbo could be moved to 3B and Morales could just be moved (or DH). Room would be made.

10/220 would be fine with me. But, I think 10/275 is much more likely to be where this thing ends at. It's 33.33 mill over 6 or 27.5 over 10. To me, I figure it's easier to cover up or account for 6 mill less in spending over the 6 years than it would be 27.5 mill of the same for 4 years. I can't see it going that high. 10/240, maybe. And if the Cubs signed Albert for 10/275, I'd be elated for a short time (and for the wrong reasons, probably) before the horror set in.

You are asking if $70 million is a big deal? Over 5 years additional years before which you're likely already getting elite production and potentially more very productive years thereafter. Also, $70M in 2016 dollars isn't the same as $70M in 2011 dollars, baseball wise or in general. Or Cubs-wise, really, as we should have a lot more revenue at that point. 220/10 and 22 AAV isn't like some horror story compared to 150/5. I too easily envision Albert being a wreck by the time his age 39/40/41/42 years roll around. He's clearly declining, and the risk of paying that 70MM for essentially nothing would be very, very real. It is for the teams offering these 10 year contracts to him.

FTH!? Fielder is going to come down to the Rangers and Cubs, imo. I never bought Seattle as a real possibility.

No one is disputing what Albert has done, but what he will do. He's a player in decline and this is precisely the sort of thing Theo was talking about when he referenced not paying for past performance.

EDIT: The Nationals maybe? I'd guess Texas if I had to. Yea that would be my second guess. I say the Nationals because they've been oddly quiet so far despite being hyped as big spenders heading in. Really hope this isn't Hoystein. NO on 10 years, even if it is Pujols. I can't imagine it's the Cubs, for reasons I've stated.
