    I don't see why there would be a big Chicago announcement surrounding baseball. Not today, anyway. He did say "as soon as" Tuesday though, mabye something for later this week?

    If Pax is working with 3rd teams, then that must mean he's not willing to throw the whole roster at the Lakers. I don't expect Pax to get fleeced in this thing.

BTW, what in god's name do you think Billy Joe and AROD talk about when they hang out? Pretty soon, someone's going to tell me that Jon Kitna and Carl Everett are going to church together. Absolutely - I did. Thanks for catching that. I heard Billy Joe is a phenomenal golfer. He missed his calling, hah.

    Wow, she understands! Wow, just kidding. Hehehe. I assume she said "if you're scratching your head" because she assumes a large portion of her readership doesn't understand the value of OPS -- which in 2007 pretty much means you either don't pay attention to baseball, or just don't care to understand much about it.

    Supposedly Cashman was the one who was advocating for Girardi. I'm thinking this is politics. Cashman greenlighted Girardi because he thought he could manipulate him and have Joe be on his side with any disputes with the Steinbrenners. Hank let Cashman have his way this time so in future disageements he could say, "but I let you pick Girardi, you owe me one". Its just so odd that one second Mattingly was the favorite and the next Girardi's getting the job. God only knows whats happening at those meetings. The power play on Torre backfired completely, the next thing they decide is to pick up Abreu's option when they have more important guys about to become FAs, they paint themselves into a corner on ARod and he opts out, and now this. BoSox win the WS and things are quickly crumbling in the Bronx. I guess it's about time the Yanks discovered the other side of the coin. I don't think Girardi's necessarily horrible, but with that ballclub it just seems like a terrible fit to me. Good. I hope they tank it.

    So which scene looks more crazy: seeing the Wrigley field turf torn up by bulldozers, or seeing Wrigley field with the bleachers torn to hell? I vote the latter. It will really look strange if they ever overhaul the grandstands.

    Wouldn't that be tampering? I don't know the rules, but yeah that does seem wrong. Mostly it seems like Rosenthal is popping off without a real clue what he's talking about.

    So I'm not clear: what happened to Mattingly, again? Wasn't he the fave for the position? I would also find it uncomfortable if I was a mega-star like Jeter and now I'm being managed by the journeyman catcher who rode my coat tails to a WS ring. But hey, if it loses more games for the Yanks then I'm all for it!

    It has absolutely nothing to do with the how the red sox finished their season. I know, but you know damn well if we signed Crisp you would start hearing the "he's a winner" crap. Kind of hard to call him a winner considering he got benched during the World Series in favor of a rookie with hardly any major league experience. We signed Marquis even though he was scratched from the Cards' roster I don't want to scare anyone, though. 8-) Surely the Cubs will find a better option than Coco.

    You could have said the same about the Cubs last year. Some organizations are just very reluctant to have a rebuilding year. I can't say I've ever seen the Cubs have one. The Cubs at least had talented players who are not all in the back half of their 30's. Omar Vizquel will be 41 and is coming off his worst season ever at the plate. Rich Aurilia will be 36 and Ryan Klesko will be 37 in April. Ray Durham is 36. Dave Roberts will be 36. Excluding Barry Bonds since he won't be a Giant in 2008, Randy Winn is the only player who had an OPS+ above 100 last year (105). I totally agree that they should blow it up and not even try to contend in 2008. I'm just saying that some teams make an attempt to contend every year, even when they'd be better off not trying. The Cubs have historically been really bad about that. I don't know about the Giants. They're Cubbish. Not exactly the same, but Cubbish.

    I'm not a fan of signing the bad players from a W.S. champion and then deluding myself into thinking I got more than what I got. A poor hitter is still a poor hitter, no matter if he has a ring on his finger.

    Peter is mad at A-Rod for announcing during the WS (you should have heard him ranting on that topic yesterday - he probably wouldn't have cared if it was the Indians in the WS). Yep, now we get to really find out the true extent of ESPN being the Boston network. I'll bet anyone who comes out with any MLB news at all in the next week will be hated on for trying to take away from the Red Sox's glory. Oh there's no doubt about that.

    It hasn't been brought up because it doesn't deserve to be brought up. The Cubs aren't even in the same league as the Boston Red Sox. Anything can happen? Sure, aliens might land on the White House front lawn tonight, too. The Cubs are in the National League, the Sox are in the American league. Very good. :lol: See? I'm a veritable fountain of baseball knowledge 8-)

    I'm told they "still have some work to do" on that. I don't know why. I don't understand how the team can pay Dempster and Wade Miller to rehab when they had about 1/200 of the upside that Prior has. My guess is the Cubs want to be certain that they don't rehab Prior, he returns in August, and then walks as a FA. My feeling is they don't want to pay him three million to rehab and then leave. The work could be convincing Prior to take a deal with a team option for 2009. I suppose. They're already rehabbing the guy, so why let him go now? I don't like the idea of my club providing rehab facilities for another club, especially with a guy who I think still has the potential to contribute. I agree with raw, we spent the money to rehab guys with far less potential, why not with Prior?

    That might be the one thing going for us. ARod has to know that the easiest path to the World Series is through the NL, not the AL. Of course, if he goes to the BoSox they would instantly be the prohibitive favorites to win it all next year. So I don't know. I still think the Cubs are an outside option, but not the most likely option, for ARod. Just imagine the ticket sales if he did come here. Cubs.com better buy some new servers for February to handle the extra traffic 8-)

    Yeah, this is ridiculous. Although I would prefer Boston to have a run like this and not New York. Still though, yuck. Watching one city dominate all the top sports is not my idea of a good time. I guess I'm a Colts fan this year then. Anything to stop the Patriots, now that Boston has the WS title under their belts.

I'd love Kobe, but absolutely no way in hell for that price. +1 There's no reason for us to make that trade, it's ridiculous. Without Kobe, we're still an exciting young team with a good shot at going deep in the playoffs in the East. On the other hand, without trading Kobe the Lakers are pretty much guaranteed of maxxing out at one-and-done in the West. It's the Lakers who are more desperate for this trade, not us. Let's not act like it's the other way around, 'cuz it isn't. Besides, I don't buy that we're done developing yet. I don't buy into this crap about Tyrus Thomas not having a good preseason. It's PRESEASON. He'll be improved this year, and even more next year. I'm sure of it. I also think Deng has more upside to explore. We could conceivably be better this year than last year, and I don't see anyone else improved in the East at all, other than Boston but I don't think they'll have the bench to compete late in the year.

    Face it, they were happy to have just gotten to the WS. There was never anything beyond a vain hope that something might happen to the Red Sox to hand it to them. Actually taking it to the Red Sox and beating them straight up was never going to happen. This was a horrible, horrible World Series.
