  1. OK so who thinks that was the wind, and who thinks that was Kemp shocked that Jim can only hit it that far anymore?
  2. Am I the only one who thinks Bob has been pretty unprofessional lately in regards to Soriano? Ever since the dropped ball he's been ridiculous. He has been. The whole "you could throw a dart in the dugout and find a better defender than Soriano" was completely uncalled for and sort of soured me on old BB I didn't hear it, but I agree it sounds over-the-top and uncalled for. At the very least he could temper it a bit. Everyone knows Soriano's not a good defender, but on a Cubs broadcast I don't expect my own announcers to openly bash Cub players like that.
  3. Come on Jim, channel your 5-years-ago self.
  4. These hit & runs on 3-2 counts are really starting to piss me off.
  5. Save yourself the wasted time and just read the first comment. It says all anyone will ever need to know:
  6. The Tigers would need to do something to improve their pitching. My understanding is they've got key components who are out, and may not come back at all. I think we're looking at a case where the AL Central is simply not as good as expected, and the White Sox are pouncing on it. It's interesting because it looks like the exact opposite is true in the NL Central. The division is looking to be better than expected, and the Cubs aren't able to run away with it despite a hot start.
  7. Any possible chance CPatt might have had in salvaging a career was dealt a crushing blow when he was put right back under the wing of the manager who presided over his demise in '04 and '05.
  8. He's not trading that pick. If he does he'll never make it home, there will be millions of fans out to burn him at the stake. I think he realizes this is his one, best chance to change the fortunes of this team for the next 10+ years. I'm almost certain he's picking Rose. He just wants to do his due diligence on Beasley. I've been wrong before, but that's how I see it.
  9. I thought Neyer was being sarcastic with CPatt comment, but he wasn't. It might not help to keep Pie in the minors to change his swing. But it didn't work to keep CPatt at the major leagues and give him at bats, either. So I guess there's no way that will work.
  10. Nick in Chicago was probably like,
  11. I didn't witness much of Beasley playing so I'll have to defer to those who know. I'm sure he's a great player based on what people say. I do wonder about the PG situation though, Hinrich's not close to what we would need to be a great team, everyone has to realize that now. You can argue we need a scoring threat inside, but how much of that would be provided by Beasley at the NBA level by just being Beasley, and how much of that might be provided by having an outstanding PG running the offense with what we currently have, or after a package deal to pull someone in? You could go crazy thinking about all the possibilities. So, I'm not going to. I'm just going to sit back and see what happens. It's a good position to be in. At least we won't be watching in horror as Miami picks Wade just ahead of us like they did when we had to settle on Hinrich.
  12. Jimbo should just keep his mouth shut. Saying something like that to the press just isn't smart. It's always easy to come up with examples where you contradicted yourself. Most GMs realize this, and keep quiet. Jim doesn't really seem to get that.
  13. It bothers me that all the losses we had on our last road trip were winnable games, with either a sizable lead in the earlier innings or a lead heading into the bottom of the 9th. I hate to say it, but if we would have just got beat that would be easier to take. But blowing two leads in the 9th in a row, and having 3, 4 run leads in Houston and blowing them. Difficult to handle that crap.
  14. We need to figure out why we can't win on the road. 2-4 on the road trip, all 4 losses were giveaways. Anyway, it's good to be home.
  15. That was a pathetic loss. You better win today cobs.
  16. Torres should be able to pick up right where he left off. The incredible news here is that the Brewers are *STILL* holding out hope he will be a miracle. They're not even DLing the guy. He should be relegated to the deepest, darkest corner of Miller Park. But Yost is intent on giving his club the least possible chance to win, so he'll be trotted back out there again, and sooner rather than later. It's getting to be quite comical. I like the "holding out hope" part. They should be holding out hope that Gagne's shoulder spontaneously explodes. I'm still holding out hope the Yost will be given a long term extension this coming off-season. Hope is a wonderful thing in baseball. Especially when it's your rival that is relying on it.
  17. The darkhorse in that equation is Kevin Hart though, who the Cubs left at AAA instead of Ascanio because they wanted him to keep starting. If Hart has another good start in AAA and Gallagher struggles the next time out, they may keep the merry go round spinning. I'll give Gallagher another spin. It was really that one bad inning that got him. He didn't look terrible. I was just disappointed to see us give away the game basically in a single inning for the 2nd night in a row. There's no excuse for scoring that few runs off those horrible pitchers in that joke of a ballpark. So there's some blame to go around.
  18. I'm not much of a college basketball fan so I cannot comment on the Coleman Beasley thing, however low graduation rates are somewhat of a red herring. When I was at OSU the graduation rate (within 4 years) for ALL undergrads averaged around 35%-45%. At most of these big schools graduation rates for all undergraduates is pretty poor. Graduation rates are always going to be worse because many times the athletes come to college unprepared to succeed at college. I know some of the people who work with the athletes at the University of Memphis, and they are working hard with the athletes even before the athletes formally take classes. I think it is a bit unfair to make blanket statements about programs. Good point, but just judging on what I've heard about Beasley, I think the complete picture reveals at least some concern. The last place I want to be as a fan is 3 years down the road after Beasley busts and hearing reports that the scouts really didn't look closely at his past shenanigans. I think we've been down this road too many times before. It's a really painful place to be, both as an organization and frankly, as a fan.
  19. Oh so you're the reason we've been losing. Good job! Time to pick it up pal.
  20. Its not even about athleticism - I don't question his ability to deal with strong and fast NBA players. I worry about his desire to be the best and to do the necessary little things. I keep coming back to Derrick Coleman. Same height and weight as Beasley. He dominated at 'Cuse and could have been one of the best PF's of all-time. Instead, he was happy to do enough to keep getting a paycheck. He drank and partied too much, was poorly conditioned for the vast majority of his career, ran Butch Beard out of NJ and caused Chuck Daley's head to explode. He was also allergic to playing defense and averse to taking on a leadership role after Drazen Petrovic's untimely death. Beasley screams Derrick Coleman to me. The same red flags have been raised in terms of his ethic, desire, and goofball tendencies (how many schools did he go to?). Plus he was recruited by Bob Huggins. ( I know I should not paint with a broad brush in this respect, but recruiting good kids with strong work ethics has never been one of Huggin's priorities. IIRC, his graduation rate at Cinci was less than 10%, and for a while was zero. And what happens when those kids get to the pros?: Kenyon Martin, Nick Van Exel, Dontonio Wingfield, etc.) Now you're scaring me about Beasley. Please draft Rose.
