  1. Sure it's a difference maker, especially multiple ones. You're talking about an OC of a good offensive ballclub coming off a super bowl win, and a bad quarterback who was putting up unprecedently bad performances coming off a flukish all defense no offense decent season that went to crap in one playoff game. That may have been the most fun season for you, but Pittsburgh fans don't even have fun watching their teams actually win Super Bowls. Yeah, there wasn't much whining going on in 1985. Steeler fans think everyone's out to get them, everything sucks, yada yada -- and they're winning the Super Bowl. They're pretty much tops in the crybaby factor category.
  2. I find it more likely the play from Vinny wasn't designed properly. Hinrich isn't that stupid. No, imbs right. He's an idiot that looks like a hobbit. http://www.nba.com/media/rockets/frodo_hinrich.jpg
  3. Yeah, but the Steeler fans I know are really whiny. I wouldn't put all that much stock in that. Fassel's another guy who I would like, but again Bears probably can't lure him here for just a season. They'd need to lay some kind of post-Lovie scenario on the table. And if you do that, you're saying Lovie's gone. That's not what I heard yesterday.
  4. Yeah, after reading that article, I'll be rooting for Veal. I can't imagine going through all that at 25 years old. Despite Cedeno's problems, he'd still have been better for us than Miles last year. In fact, the whole sequence of trading Wuertz for nothing, effectively trading Cedeno and Pie for an older, worse, more expensive version of Wuertz (Heilman), and then signing older, worse, more expensive versions of Cedeno and Pie (Miles and Gaithwright) continues to leave me scratching my head. The DeRosa trade and the Bradley signing I can wrap my head around. This other thing... not so much. These are the things that really bother me about last offseason. I was behind the Bradley move and still think it was the right one at the time given the options available. When we picked up Miles I knew something had gone horribly, horribly wrong.
  5. 100% behind this move. It's why I'd have preferred keeping Fox instead of spending him on another right-handed middle reliever. Heck yes. I didn't know Branyan was available.
  6. The fact that Mariotti is one of the people that determines baseball's HOF should tell everyone something.
  7. PFT says they fired the O Line coach, but are keeping Arian after all. Apparently ESPN Radio Pittsburgh spread some bad info. Bummer, one of the reports was that he was making fun of Tomlin behind his back, which is something I love to picture. Wow, that one made it all over the country yesterday.
  8. The vote for Segui might have been a statement from that voter that they aren't opposed to voting for players with a history of PED use. Segui openly admitted to using HGH. That seems so ridiculous, but I'll bet you're right.
  9. Hey, that's baseball. The Cubs have a new owner and Hendry isn't going to be around for much of this decade and even his crappy contracts can't be used as an excuse to be saddling the team after a couple of years. What happened over the last 10 years isn't any kind of sure thing to happen again over the next 10 years. There are no sure things, other than that chick from that movie Sure Thing, but the Cardinals organization has earned the benefit of the doubt much moreso than the Cubs organization has. It may be new ownership, but they haven't done anything yet, and management in completely intact. Just waiting for Hendry to be gone, that's all. Then we'll see if the Cubs can start building up more of that "benefit of the doubt" that the Cards currently have.
  10. If Dawson had been the only player who I think didn't deserve it, I'd be more vocal about it. As it is, I'm glad for Hawk.
  11. Vinny wins 4 games to torture us for more months, and then.......RIGHT BACK IN DA TANK. Ahh yes.
  12. Well of course. He doesn't get hit in practice. So I guess this means Jay will ~gasp!~ call an audible or two. Oh, the horror!
  13. There's that too. Turner is the only assistant they've hired with previous NFL experience at the position. They usually go for new people, which would seem to point more in Bates' direction.
  14. The Cards may end up running away with it, but I wouldn't hand them the title to them. They could, yes. But they are also one injury away from being in serious trouble. If someone like Carpenter goes down for half the season or more, they simply don't have the resources to overcome it (though poor play from division rivals could help), and could end up looking way up at the Cubs. They are a top heavy team and the Holliday signing does not change this. What it does do is make it likely they remain top heavy. I don't see them as being clearly superior, and talk that they are going to dominate the division for the foreseeable future is patently ridiculous. I try to stay away from predicting anything in January, but it does seem that the Cards have the upper hand as of right now.
  15. I find it more likely the play from Vinny wasn't designed properly. Hinrich isn't that stupid.
  16. I was thinking of the fact that it's a QB who Weis is familiar with, and also because it's generally accepted that the Bears is a one-year job.
  17. Weis >>>> Bates. It's easy to see why the Bears are Weis' second choice though.
  18. The Cubs had injury prone guys get injured. Zambrano isn't injury prone, neither is Soto, Ramirez is injury prone. Lilly isn't injury prone. Hmmm. Zambrano perhaps isn't "injury prone," but its no secret he's been getting tweaky in recent years. I don't think it's a stretch to have predicted significant time out of action in '09 for him. He's been putting a lot of mileage on his arm. Lilly hasn't been injured with us, but missed time with the Blue Jays. It could be argued that he was due.
  19. The Boys are going to beat the Eagles again. Other than that, I think I agree with your picks.
  20. This deal does remind me an awful lot of Soriano. Although with the Cards' luck, they'll get more out of it.
  21. Huh. I really thought Iowa would lose, but they played a good game and got the win. Nicely done. As for field conditions playing a part in the Big 10's success: so what? Bad field conditions happen. Teams that are able to take advantage should gain an edge. Teams that need a perfect track to succeed should suffer for not being able to adapt. There's no reason that should be painted as some kind of "bad" thing.
  22. It's kind of an interesting dynamic with Weis in Chicago. Many ND fans are in the city, and while they definitely wanted him gone as coach of ND, the feeling is he's still a decent fit as a OC. I wonder if Weis would be a good PR pick for the Bears in light of that. Yesterday's press conference was a complete disaster. They need to move on someone who will make people forget what a bunch of incompetent morons they are. Martz isn't going to do that -- he would be seen as just another Lovie "buddy hire."
  23. Well, the Steelers apparently made it official earlier: Arians is out: http://kdka.com/steelers/bruce.arians.fired.2.1406516.html He'd have to be better than Turner.
  24. Well, I think of it this way. I can use the 2 vacation days for something other than Bears camp this year.
  25. No chance. Yeah, I know.
