    LOL, 5/55 for Lilly. $11mil/yr for basically what amounts to 12-12, assuming the team hits decently for him. You gotta wonder what's going to happen when the ever-fidgety Trib decides spending $160million was the wrong thing to do, and now they've got 5 or 6 long-term bloated contracts on the books.

    All I'm saying is, some players, who really love where they play and want to stick around, are willing to act on more than just financial interest. Latest example of this would probably be Chris Carpenter. Drew's always moving from team to team for a guy with top-flight skills. Maybe it means nothing, maybe it does. carpenter? dude just got what equates to 50 mil over 3 years. I thought the deal was 5/65. There were a few people on the radio earlier saying he gave the Cards a home-town discount. In this market, $13mil/yr for a Cy Young is probably fairly cheap. That's why I singled Carpenter out.

    Part of that is because of this year's playoffs. Mediocre pitching ruled. Next year it will be something else that gets a bounce. But Lilly can be more than a servicable 4 at his best. In his best seasons, he's been more than a servicable 4. In this market, if you make all your starts and are have at least average results, you will get paid. But that's partially because there are so few guys out there who make all their starts with average effectiveness and are free agents. Teams need 5 startings pitchers, and if guys get hurt, they need more. Hendry, coming off a year where they were starting guys who had no business on a 40 man roster, was desperate for people who could go close to 200 innings and be okay. But that's how Maddux was compensated the past two years. He was just a 200 IP guy who didn't suck, and he got $9m the last two years. MLB teams are willing to pay a premium to pitchers who make all their starts. In years past they've given huge deals to very talented guys who couldn't make all their starts. It's a constantly shifting market. I totally agree that durability was undervalued in starting pitchers for a long time and it was due for a price correction, but we're seeing way too big of a correction. I'm on board with that. Overreaction is the American Way.

    Thats more likely, instead of gettting at least 1 good starter we are going to get 1 mediocre and 1 sucky and over pay for both. I know it. I'm getting that feeling when this whole thing is over Cub fans are going to feel like they've been punched in the gut.

    I don't doubt him either. And I can imagine he had no idea it was going to happen, since everyone probably told him how "great" Cub fans are. Nice going bleacher bums.

    That's $14mil/yr. Just $3mil less than Soriano. If he stays healthy, he'll be great. I still wonder why it always seems JD Drew is trying to get away from the team he is currently playing for.

    I'll believe both when I see them. I think there's a decent chance we don't end up with either of them. Yeap. This is all very typical of the first couple days of winter meetings. To be fair to the media though, they are basically down there to uncover and report any bit of info they can. It's really a "listener beware" situation-----there's an expectation that everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

    Do you have the quote? The is a strong distinction between saying "he will be traded" and "we'll explore our options". The 'desperation' associated with trading Jones should be attributed 100% to reporters unless someone can put up an exact quote from Hendry demonstrating otherwise. I'd have a tough time describing the Jones situation as desperate on day 2 of the winter meetings, in any event. Or really anything close. Desperate is being 2 games up in the division and watching your #1 starter blow out his arm 1 week before the trading deadline.

If we get Tommie back by game 15, he should be fine for the playoffs. Vasher's injury also not serious. Still, we will be thin this week on D, and Stl. can run the ball. Not sure how they can stop Jackson, but they better figure it out.

    I like how Skiles is starting to work Sweets in more. Even Big Ben sounded more positive in his post game comments. Noc is underrated.

    I think we're going to have to count on Rich Hill at some point. His minor league numbers are incredible, and his 2nd half in the majors was, as you said, good. He's got it in him----there's something to be said for giving a guy the reins and saying "you can do it, so go do it."

    Hendry keeps saying they do, yet he is hot to trade Jones. This is what confuses me. My best guess is, Jones has asked to be traded and they just aren't making that fact public. Ahhh. Was it always known that Jacque wanted a trade, or is this new? Either way, that makes sense. Hendry's got to look elsewhere for LH hitting. Not sure where he will find it.

    No kidding. This is where the throwing around of $2-4m deals to mediocre (or worse) replacable players hurts you. If a far superior pitcher costs only $5m more than the other guy, go with the better pitcher. I agree with both of you, but I think the stiking point is years not money. i'd take 3 typical years of schmidt + 1 year were he completely falls apart over 4 typical lilly years. co-sign I would without question take the 3/1 of Schmidt over 4 Lilly. Me too. Not sure if Hendry is seriously looking at Schmidt anymore, especially with the Jennings trade rumor. Sounds like Lilly/Jennings with Meche as a fall-back option. Kinda yukky. Not totally yukky, but kinda yukky.

    i figured rams fans would've given up after getting embarrassed at home by the Cardinals. I think the Rams have quit. I don't know how the Rams will respond to Bulger's comments. I can never gage a team's response to something like that. Personally, that sounds to me like a team that's finished. But just when I think that, a team will respond and come out gangbusters. The interesting thing is, with Carolina's bad, bad loss last night the Rams are still in this thing. They have something to play for.

    :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: funny stuff :lol: :lol: Is it? How often do teams win games when their offense puts up 107 total yards and turns the ball over 5 times? The "If" game is always going to result in these kind of arguments, because everyone can play it. If the Bears have a quarterback close to league average, what happens then? If If If... Yep yep.
