  1. Maybe he forgot that he traded Freddy Garcia and thinks he still has set rotation? Nope. He knows what he's doing. He's putting himself in perfect position for the future if any one of those prospects works out. And at least one of them likely will. The White Sox are going to have so much flexibility in '08 and '09 it's ridiculous. They'll be competing for the division title and looking sweet on payroll. Cubs may compete, but we're setting a window for ourselves, beyond which all the lengthy, bloated contracts will begin to hamstring what we can do.
  2. what about hospital jello jokes? There's always room for jell-o. There's sugar-free jello too :)
  3. Kenny Williams is smart. He's busy stockpiling young, cheap arms while the rest of the league is chasing after aging, injury-ridden ones. Although I thought he would stick with Garland----still young. Maybe there's some mileage on that arm that we don't know about.
  4. Wow, Hendry has to go to the hospital and that's all it takes for Meche to turn tail and run to the Royals. Well.....that and a 5 year deal for big bucks.
  5. Will you bet $10 million on that? J/K couldn't resist 8-)
  6. Kenny has a way with these deals. I'm sure he knows the players he got have some good potential. That and the fact that Freddie is owned a ton of money(for them) and the White Sox can afford to wait on young pitching.
  7. I assume you mean Meche. While I fully realize the comparisons don't necessarily translate, when you can say the guy compares with Schmidt, Carpenter, and Clement at 27 I don't see how that means he's terrible and has no shot.
  8. Yanks throw money around like candy too. They get by. Cubs are tossing cash because they can. Always could----this whole idea of "budgets" and "spending limits" always seemed a little strange to me when applied to the Cubs. They've got so much cash it's ridiculous. We're finally seeing it. No correct that, the league is finally seeing what this organization can bring to the table if they want to.
  9. chris carpenter through age 27 is terrible and about to have a major injury. http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/carpech01.shtml And look what happened. Little NL cookin', little decent lineup around him, and wa-la good pitcher. yes, after a major injury in which he missed a full season and completely rebuilt himself as a pitcher. seems like a good bet. I always thought *not* needing surgery would be a positive thing. Thanks for setting me straight.

  11. I'll take him. Heck, he's trending better and he's only 28. Similar pitchers through 27 contains these names: Chris Carpenter Jason Schmidt Matt Clement That's not all that bad. I think Meche has a shot to improve quite a bit yet. Depends on the dollars. I wonder how Hendry's unfortunate hospital stay will affect some of these deals.
  12. 2004 Lilly would work out alright.
  13. He's got spunk, I suppose that's something. What pitchers don't have shoulder problems. Most pitch through them. Did you hear that PRIOR!!!! You're right. Just thought I would point out the trend. The fact that he beat the crap out of his manager after his desire was questioned is also interesting 8-)
  14. Here's a pretty relevant and thorough run-down on Teddy since he's now a cub: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/10/2007_mlb_free_a_6.html Injury points (since the FOX article mentioned his history of arm problems): October 1999: Shoulder surgery July 2002: Inflammation in shoulder February 2005: tendinitis in shoulder July 2005: tendinitis in biceps September 2005 (obviously not a good year): discomfort in shoulder blade March 2006: mild right shoulder "injury" June 2006: shoulder tightness Sensing a trend here? He has plenty of shoulder problems. So I think we should all be prepared for that. Also check this out (I didn't remember this): He's got spunk, I suppose that's something.
  15. Church would be preferable, as someone else said.
  16. Ooooh, some *very* interesting little tid-bits in that one. Among other things. Ted Lilly thinks he wants to reverse the curse, huh? I think he's waiting for that Yankees offer, because after all, NY would be a preferrable destination to Chicago unless the money is more here.
  17. confirmed by espn.com Who is this O'Brien character? He seems a little loose-lipped even for an agent. Coming right out in your face and just putting the offered numbers out there seems a bit forward to me. I don't think I've ever heard, for example, Scott Boras do that. It looks like espn.com is saying 40-44, the agent didn't appear to mention the numbers, at least in the quote. Oh yeah sorry my bad.
  18. If the Yanks sign Pettitte I wonder if that will lessen their appetite for Lilly. If it's truly down to us & the Yanks (which I find hard to believe---there's always someone else lurking), I'd like to see the price drop a bit.

Anyway, I'm starting to think like vance. How much are these big bucks mediocre pitchers really going to help? Compare the risk of Gooz and Marshall not improving to Ted Lilly being as bad or worse than he was last year. Are we so sure Lilly is so much more likely to come through that he's worth $11 million? I know I'm not. Who knows? Maybe Marmol will gain control of his stuff. If he ever did, he'd make Ted Lilly look like a dead-end prospect.
  20. I realize it's 100% speculation, but it sure looks to me like Schmidt took our 3/44 offer and went right back to the Dodgers & Mariners and asked for a bit more. And he got it.
  21. The really sad thing is, mediocrity would be a massive improvement over last year. Schmidt's contract reveals everything. He got the 3/44 offer from the Cubs, then used it to get a bit more from LA. He was always going to stay on the West Coast, he just used Jimbo. Oh well, the price kept him away from St. Louis so that's not too bad.
  22. Works for me Yup, if we got Schmidt, that completely changes my desire for Lilly. I'd bring him on as a 4th-5th starter if the rest of our rotation is Zambrano/Schmidt/Hill/Miller (or Prior) Gotten to the point where it's like the little boy who cried wolf. They keep saying it and saying it, but there's nothing actually happening.
  23. Yep. Here comes the Cards, waiting to see who the Cubs want so they can swoop in and steal him out from under us. And probably and much less $$$$ too. Hendry needs to attend the Walt Joketty school on how to get players for less than their market value.
