  1. Just win series. If the Cubs win the majority of three game sets the rest of the way they'll be in good shape. They do have to play better at Wrigley Field, though. Hahaha. I'm guessing you forgot to go back and edit this post, right? Brewers play what? 5 more series all year against opponents over .500? The Cubs would need to go on a hellish winning streak, and the Brewers one hell of a losing streak, for us to catch them. Just winning 2/3 in a majority of series? That boat, as they say, sailed long ago. Do the Brewers look poised to start dropping 10/11 or 12/15 any time soon? Best hitting in the division, and it's not close? Pitching right up there with us in the Central -- nobody else in the same zip code? Easy schedule the rest of the way? I don't think so.
  2. I'm gonna get ready for some fireworks. Here's to better luck tomorrow, cheers.
  3. that sounds like matt vasgersian. is he calling the game for FOX or something? i think so, i can't remember. It really sounds like him.
  4. Who is it tomorrow? Marquis? I wouldn't be feeling very relaxed.
  5. Here's your big chance to get innings, Eyre. LOL. Go to it son.
  6. Or they just get the lucky break of facing Eyre. Teeing off on him really isn't that impressive. eyre started the game and gave up 7 over 2? As much as he has been good before today, Sean Marshall is not projected to be a front of the rotation starter in the MLB. He is a decent starter who pitched an awful game. That happens. If you were watching him pitch, then you saw that he was unable to get his curveball below the belt for the whole game, and it cost him. i never said he was. again, i wasn't making the hyperbolic statements about him. Yeah, I'm not sure in the long run Sean is even going to be a 'decent' starter. He's done this before, starting off good for a few starts and then losing it. Can't keep sending him back to the minors forever. Eventually, he'll either need to find long term consistency or he'll be done.
  7. Free agency hasn't even started - we don't know what the final product will look like. Your slow :D Who is a big scorer available in free agency? Who is anybody that can make a difference that's available in free agency? I think we'd have to get one through a trade. I was under the impression that one of the biggest trade chips they had was the pick. Once the draft actually happens, the value of those picks typically evaporates. That sucks. The good old evaporating pick value. Evaporation of picks = sucks. Got it 8-)
  8. Wasnt he always kind of outspoken with the test me stuff and what not. He also was a TE at Auburn so he was big when he came into baseball and hasnt really gotten any bigger. I am not naive and if it came out next week he was a user I wouldnt be shocked. I just dont think there is any evidence at all that points a finger at him. First Ballot HOFer. This is what annoys me about the steriod issues. Getting bigger doesn't mean a guy has or hasn't used steriods. I'm not saying that I think Big Hurt doesn't deserve to be in the HOF, in fact I believe he does deserve to be in. I'll be interested to hear what networks like ESPN have to say about guys like Thomas, Griffey Jr., ARod, etc. that all played in the "steriod era" and are HOFers in my mind. If you don't vote guys based on suspicion, or because they're guilty by association then none of these guys get in. The whole situation intrigues me, to be honest. I think Frank has escaped the suspicion because he's always been a big man, and he's always seemed to be willing to be tested, even speaking out about it. He'll get in, IMO. Probably not first ballot, but he's a HOF at least in my mind. He had some absolutely fantastic years, and after his mid-career slump he's hung on and provided some longevity to boot.
  9. Unless you are implying he was actually 23, then this makes no sense. Guys don't just have a finite number of swings in them before they deteriorate. It's probably a combination of things. Is this the first time he's really had a lengthy slump like this? Sometimes when a player goes through it the first time, it's really tough to figure it out & push through. I do agree with the impatient angle -- he could stand to take a few more pitches. But then again, lots of players could. I'm not sure how much money he's really losing. Yes, the price will go down, but given his past accomplishments I find it likely at least some teams will scoff at this year and give him a handsome contract.
  10. They wouldn't be messing with Z's days of rest-they would be using the off game today to move him up one day and pitch on normal rest instead of one extra day. With that said, I hope they don't. I think Z should pitch the last game before the break, and then he can pitch again the first game after the break. With the way the Cubs are going right now, it would really be nice to have two Z games in a row, and it would be normal rest for Z. Plus, he's just 9-6 and has a pedestrian ERA of 4.20. We should be using this opportunity to do as you say: have Z provide an extra boost for the Cubs. Not an extra boost for his ego.
  11. I hope you're being sarcastic.
  12. So, he's battled back to slightly above average. Very good work considering how horrid he was in April & May, but still not all-star calibre, IMO. Yeah, I think Lou's just wrong here. There are definitely reasons why Z shouldn't be an all-star.
  13. We got him from Baltimore for Sosa. So, 3 years later, we finally get something positive out of the Sosa trade. no, the Cubs got instant payoff when Burnitz outperformed Sosa for a few dollars less than the Cubs would have had to pay Sosa and by getting him to opt out of the rest of his contract so they weren't hung with 18M in dead weight for 2006. I think you're right, but it would be nice to have Fontenot become a solid member of the team long-term as a final payoff from the whole Sosa meltdown. Even if he just settles in as a solid bench player.
  14. At some point, it would seem to make sense that Prince will head over to the A.L. and be a DH. Might be a few years, though. Is that when he hits 300 or 350? Oh, and in case anyone is wondering, I mean pounds. Well, the next contract he signs figures to put more than enough cash in his bank account to cover a stomach stapling, should he want to shed the pounds. 8-)
  15. Nil, since everyone has known for weeks that Jacque is on the way out. I can't see this having any effect.
  16. Jacque Jones was doomed from the start with the Cubs because of the contract given to him. I think Jacque is a really nice guy and wasn't terrible in his only full year with the Cubs. He doesn't deserve the racist comments and random booing that Cubs fans gave him. He will always have a negative impression of this city and Cubs fans because of it. Oh well. A) no one deserves the racist comments that may have been made. B) the contract wasn't that bad, if he actually produced this season like he did last year, no one would have said anything aside from "trade him while he's high" C) being little-league bad for a large portion of your contract will get the fans mad at you, true. He's only been "little-league bad" for half a year. As was pointed out earlier, he was good for the full 2006 season. UMFan is correct, Jacque was doomed from the start. He actually sucked until sometime in May, but I get your point. His overall numbers wound up being pretty good for '06. Little chance of that happening for '07, since we're pretty much done with the first half and he's stunk the entire time.
  17. Click Yes, the extensions are wise, they're good players and you get them for probably cheaper than a FA acquisition. Plus, the longer term contracts impacts the team less over time because the league keeps increasing the salary cap and revenues in the NFL are still increasing. That's something I don't think guys like Snyder understand. You sign FA's to short-term deals for big money, you lose out on the opportunity to get those later years on a long-term deal from them. Those are the years when the contract's impact is less. Urlacher is a great example -- seemed like a huge deal at the time, but now it's pretty damn equitable for a HOF LB.
  18. I still think Eyre should be DFA, though I agree 3 innings was too much to expect from him so that's on Lou. Lou's had some good things work out lately though. In particular, playing Pagan in CF today instead of Pie turned out very nicely.
  19. Do other teams reach this level of craziness in their games? I guess I'm biased, but it just seems like we have 1 or 2 games like this every year that no other team can touch. A real good example is that Mongo/Angel Hernandez game a few years back. Just insanity. It's always at Wrigley too. I mean, the phrase "Wild one at Wrigley" is a calling card now. Tonight we've got bipolar winning/losing, fans freaking out running on the field, Soriano speaking in tongues......just great stuff. 8-)
  20. Came running right at Howry and just as he was about to strike he got Urlachered by security. Full on powerslammed.
  21. They bailed out Eyre. He can't just sit every game if he's on the roster. Ecspecially with a 5 man bullpen (which includes a LOOGY). Stop blaming Lou for the top of the 9th. He didn't want to pitch Marmol, Ohman, Howry for the 3rd or 4th straight day. This is on Hendry/Eyre/Howry. I don't mind spreading out the blame because all those guys listed there deserve some of it too but Lou also deserves a lot of it as well. Yeah, it's just too much to put Eyre out there for 3 innings. 2 was pushing it. He wound up using Howry anyway -- and probably more than he would have if he would have used him from the beginning of the inning. I mean, I think everyone understands what Lou was trying to do, but Eyre for 3 innings just won't work there's no way.
  22. Wow, just. Wow. Soriano bails out the bullpen, and Lou.
  23. That was luck. Bases jammed, but 2 out. Soriano up.
