  1. Or interviewing someone and asking them how a dead guy is doing. I almost died that day from laughter. That was easily one of the funniest things I've ever heard. What happened? When Joe Carter was in the booth a few years ago, an NFL player was their guest one day (I can't remember which one). Carter said to the player "Hey, I know you and commissioner Rozelle didn't see eye to eye during your playing days...how's your relationship doing now" and the player responded "Well, I guess it's fine now..he died about 5 years ago" It was just so perfect. I wonder if it's on the internet somewhere. I was driving and had to pull over for about 15 minutes. I still laugh just thinking about it.
  2. Just to expand on that point, Dunn's career numbers in the last two months of the season... August: .221/.343/.477 September: .211/.346/.386 And last year... August: .188/.284/.416 September: .157/.333/.265 I don't want a guy who can't hit better than .220 during the stretch run. Just another in the long list of reasons to not go after Adam Dunn. Good Lord that's bad. Wonder what happens? He's a big guy, but doesn't look out of shape to the point that he would just break down. I'm kind of hoping these are the numbers we'll see from Prince Fielder in August and September 8-)

  4. I hope so, but I can't say I have as much confidence as you do that Jim will do it. Even so, it's still a roll of the dice whether Soto will hit up here or not, but it's a chance I'd like to take. God, it can't get much worse that's for sure.
  5. ....and an error is often a subjective, arbitrary determination as well.
  6. http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/saltaja01.shtml Nicely done. Much better to just post the link with a name like that. Might want to check with Cubs equipment managers before trading for him. Need to get them to waive their "no ridiculous 20 character names" clause ;)
  7. Why on earth would the commish have anything to say about it? He only bitches about paying over slot for draft picks... and understandably so, considering the talent we got in the 06 draft without having a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round pick. At any rate, we have holes at C, SS, and CF right now, plus the potential to upgrade in RF. At C, only Salty and Piazza are really available. Salty wont be much of an impact bat this year, and considering Piazza's defensive woes, we'd probably be better off just bringing up Soto. At SS, there's really nothing available unless the Yankees fall way out of it this month. Even at that, I don't see Jim ponying up for Arod unless he gets him to agree to waive his opt-out. Again, most likely upgrade is just bringing up Cedeno. In CF, Pie could turn it on and be a real impact player, but it seems likely he's a year away from being truly ready. Unfortunately, most teams with trade-candidate CFers are in the races right now. Andruw Jones, Ichiro, Torii Hunter, Eric Byrnes, Mike Cameron... all those guys are in the playoff hunt. And I don't see Jimbo trading for a guy with more than one year left on his contract simply to avoid blocking Pie. In RF, Cliff Floyd is hitting well enough but is severely lacking power. Jermaine Dye, Ken Griffey Jr., and Bobby Abreu have all been made available. And there's always the chance we could play Adam Dunn out of position in RF. I guess the point is that we aren't going to be able to acquire a real impact bat for the positions we currently have black holes at... so if we do manage to get an impact player, it's not gonna be as useful as it could be. All of this brings one thing to my mind: solid, productive farm systems are a good thing. Wish we had one.
  8. How good is their defense really though? I have to laugh, Koyie Hill said in a radio interview a couple weeks back (paraphrase) "funny thing is, I was always known as an offensive catcher" Yeah, riiiiiiiight Koyie. Little league doesn't count.
  9. Yep. I live in a northern suburb and I get it. I'm in southeastern Wisconsin between Madison and Milwaukee and I get WGN. I'm almost positive WTMJ would come in down there. They're both 50,000 watt stations. Yep. You'll get 620, 720, 1310 out of Madtown. Southeastern Wisconsin gives one a pretty good selection on the AM dial for sports. After dark you can even pick up the Indians. I was able to pick up a Reds game on the radio after dark many years ago. My best was a Toronto game, but it kept fading in & out.
  10. I'd be shocked if they let Jim take on even more salary after his expensive plan has yielded a 2nd place, .500 ballclub.
  11. As far as I know, they are. And while I agree to an extent, I think they believe he's a stable presence there, and don't want to surround Urlacher with two unknowns, assuming Briggs doesn't play. Hillenmeyer is the weakest link, but he does his job for the most part and will almost certainly never stress the salary cap. I agree it's better to keep a known presence besides Urlacher and just try to develop Briggs' replacement.
  12. I definitely agree with that. There are so many Rosenhaus guys on this team. We really need to isolate the Briggs thing and hope it doesn't affect any other negotiations. This looks like a step in that direction. I know everyone's a professional, so hopefully that's how this whole thing will be handled.
  13. I think he's under contract to WSCR. I don't think they'd let one of their talents moonlight with a competing station. I wouldn't think it is that difficult to work something out, but you might be right.
  14. Len and Steve... that'd be an awesome team! IMHO, that would be the best booth in baseball. Although I have grown to like Brenly now, too. I'd like to see the return of Gracie. I've listened to him from time to time, he's pretty good. Ex-Cubs seem to do well -- Sutcliffe is listenable, too. Well alright, except for Carter :D
  15. I don't like the power outage from the entire team in the 2nd half of the Nats series, to be honest. But I'm still a ways away from calling for a move of DLee to somewhere else in the order. For June & July, it's been a working lineup. Not saying it will continue to, though. Maybe they go into a long slump, I dunno.

  17. With MacPhail gone, might be Stoney...
  18. Who says it has to be one or the other? Theriot would be a nice super-util guy off the bench. He's not starter quality. True. Trouble is, neither is Cedeno. Or Izzy. They're all benchies, and we have to start one of them.
  19. That scares me, Kearns is an underachiever but he could pop one.
  20. Base hit for Fick. Here comes Lou. Howry better not suck.
