  1. That's a good point.
  2. Jimbo Fisher, Charlie Strong, Larry Fedora, and maybe Al Golden seem to be Tennessee's targets now. Butch Davis also seems to be in the mix too. Davis would be a great hire if it weren't for the NCAA issues. My order of preference from that list would be Fisher, Davis, Strong, Fedora.............. Golden.
  3. Pretty sure the Titans honored Steve McNair after his murder suicide. McNair was a more beloved figure in Nashville than I'd assume Belcher is in KC though, so it may not be a good comparison.
  4. That's far less than I expected. I'm not opposed to Choo at all, he just seems to be outside our current, apparent plan.
  5. That may have been overstating, I'm honestly not sure how motivated the Indians are to trade Choo. I assumed not very, but I could be wrong. I agree on Bourn that it's probably just Boras posturing.
  6. I've made that argument myself, but with guys who aren't as likely to immediately fall off a cliff like Bourn. Bourn is a guy you pay a bunch to right now and live with the consequences later, Upton would have been a guy you add with 2-4 years of good to very good baseball in mind. Choo fits that mold much better, but will cost a lot in prospects. I'd rather have signed Upton for just money than give prospects for Choo. If we get Choo, I won't be unhappy, though.
  7. I'm not sure how excited I am by either. Bourn is going to cost a ton ("true leadoff hitter" and whatnot to up his value) and may well decline really fast and while I really like Choo, he's probably going to cost a ton in prospects. If we were close to contention and he put us over the top, I'd be excited. But as an early piece of the puzzle, I'm not crazy about him. These have the feel of overpaying to get good quick.
  8. I'm kinda confused now. Has the front office moved away from the rebuild and is now considering going all-in (or something close to it) for 2013? Bourn and Choo, while very good players, don't seem to fit into the rebuild we've appeared to commit to.
  9. Ah, thanks. Unless it's really damaged, I'd have some interest in Schlereth as a buy-low option. Might as well in the position we've put ourselves.
  10. I'm as opposed to this suck for 3 years strategy as anybody, but I have 0 interest in Josh Hamilton. Odds are extremely high he's on the DL more than 50% of the time he's here at his age and with his history. And maybe I've missed something, but if we're admittedly in need of OFs and looking at Bourn, why did we pass on Upton? He would've made a whole lot more sense than Bourn.
  11. What's wrong with Daniel Schlereth? I was under the impression he was kinda intriguing.
  12. I don't think Hart was as excited about Gruden as the boosters, but I don't buy that he wasn't interested in him. From the sound of it, Hart was concerned about the level of control Gruden apparently wanted.
  13. Apparently there's a media war going on. Knoxville media members (who largely have sources in the ad) say Gruden's out and never really was in. Chattanooga media members (who largely have sources with the boosters) say Gruden got an offer and the only holdup is he wants more allotment for assistants. Hargis of the TFP is standing by his report and there's a radio host in Chattanooga says the deal is complete and Gruden will be at UT and says his source is #1 UT booster Jim Haslam. I still doubt he'll end up here, but this media war is interesting.
  14. Hard to believe nobody else has picked up on it. He has been rumored for a while as being someone Hart was interested in, though. Pretty sure it was a joke. Ah, completely misunderstood then.
  15. I was higher on him before Louisville sputtered of late, but I liked what I saw while he was DC at Florida and I think he's done a pretty good job of recruiting to Louisville. The development of Bridgewater is pretty encouraging too. I'd prefer Art Briles and Gary Patterson to him, but I'd be pretty happy with Strong. I wouldn't really call it "settling," though - he was on the top of my list of non-pipedreams a couple weeks ago. I like Strong as a HC a lot.
  16. Hard to believe nobody else has picked up on it. He has been rumored for a while as being someone Hart was interested in, though.
  17. His 8 wins in 2010: Villanova - 1AA Cent Michigan - 3-9 UConn - 8-5 Army - 7-6 Bowling Green - 2-10 Buffalo - 2-10 Akron - 1-11 Kent St - 5-7 Temple was a complete joke before he got there I understand, but that's not a ringing resume of wins. I would hope a coach could manage a winning record with that pitiful a schedule in his 5th year on the job - it shows more that he's competent rather than that he's a really good coach. His 2009 wasn't any better - he had 9 wins, but only 1 (Navy) was over a team with a winning record. Otherwise it was 4 5-win teams and the rest were 1-2 win teams. If Golden's the best we can do, we might as well have kept Dooley. And I still don't see how I'm being unreasonable. I'm noting that a lot of people think Gruden is in play and, because of that, I don't completely rule him out but doubt he's actually in the running. Other than him, I have 2 high profile coaches (Jimbo/Mora) who are only on my list because they've been directly linked to UT and 2 non-high profile coaches (Briles/Patterson) on my list of hopefuls. If it makes you feel better, I'd be perfectly happy with guys like Charlie Strong and Tommy Tuberville as well.
  18. Saw that. I've never heard of him, but he doesn't sound terribly reputable. I definitely hope he isn't right. Regardless of whether Gruden is a legit possibility or not, I have no desire to see us hire Golden. Might as well have kept Dooley.
  19. Haha, that's what I figure but media members around here are convinced he'd consider it.
  20. This will probably get me ridiculed, but I'm actually not completely writing him off as a serious candidate for UT. I just have trouble believing, when it comes down to signing a long-term deal, that he'll choose college over the NFL. There's simply too much smoke surrounding this situation to think that there isn't legit interest from Gruden. And in all honesty, I wouldn't want Gruden over a guy like Jimbo Fisher anyway. While coaching, Gruden had a pretty strong reputation of not having the patience to develop young players and rookies. Unless that patience has increased, I'd be concerned that we'd be looking at a Charlie Weiss at Notre Dame situation where he brings in great talent, but can't develop that talent due to impatience. If he leaves the development to his staff and focuses on kind of overseeing everything and in game strategy (where he reportedly excels), I'd be really happy with him. My top 5 at this point is probably: 1) Jimbo 2) Gruden 3) Briles 4) Mora (keep hearing his name, have my doubts he'd leave UCLA, though) 5) Patterson
  21. Yeah, this whole Gruden saga started when Fulmer was fired. People first started clinging to the idea that because of what you pointed out, plus that his in-laws still live around and he owns land in Knoxville, he might have enough ties to seriously consider us. Jason LaCanfora and Chris Mortensen have both said that if Gruden does coach in college, the only place he'd consider would be UT. My skepticism with the whole Gruden thing is that he'd actually choose coaching college over the NFL, though.
  22. Rumors are going around big that Gruden will be announced as Tennessee's coach Friday. I still don't fully buy it, but rumors are that we're willing and able to go to $10+ million for Gruden and his staff and Jimmy Haslam may even toss in a small slice of ownership in the Browns. He's also likely to get total football operations control ala Saban at Bama. The media is still completely on the "Gruden is a longshot at best but likely out" side, but apparently there are two different stories being told - the AD is saying he's out while the boosters are saying it's basically a done deal. My first instinct is to think this is all bunk, but there's a strange silence around the coaching search and even semi-prominent guys like Jerry Punch (who has plenty of contacts around college football) are saying no coach anywhere has had any contact from UT. Punch even said he thinks the deal is already done, though it's simply an educated guess. Either Dave Hart is moving incredibly slowly or he's already got a deal in place and only the currently unemployed guys (Gruden/Petrino/Davis) make any sense if that's the case.
  23. Me too. I really doubt it, though.
  24. After losing the Jags, the Titans are right on track for a top 10 pick. With Houston/@Indy/NYJ/@GB/Jax left, I don't think I see more than 2 wins ... leading to a 6-10 record. Probably not bad enough to can Munchak, but it should get us into the top 10.
  25. Interesting, thanks. I can definitely understand that and it's why I asked you about it. I wanted to get your perspective. Anything at all to the rumors that Auburn has interest in Petrino?
