I just question whether he's a significant upgrade over Jackson.

Well, for some inexplicable reason the Titans apparently aren't good this year. For the third straight game I felt like the Titans were the better team (or at least even) and for the third straight time we lost. The Jets looked ok, but they got 14 points off Titans fumbles and didn't move the ball well enough to likely get those otherwise. Titans should have won, but nonetheless are 0-3. We have the Jags next and then the Colts and Pats. We really need to win two of those three and maybe all three. Definitely have to beat the Jags and Colts (in Nashville). And I apologize for questioning Football Outsiders' ranking of the Titans special teams as worst in the league. Our coverage is ok, but we don't even have a returner who can catch the football.

Vintage Tennessee football today. No passing offense, good rushing offense, great defense. Tennessee won 34-23 over Ohio and the Bobcats have a fairly solid team. Some nice athletes and well coached. Frank Solich is doing a good job there. 2-2 is not a bad way to start the year, hopefully we can now split with Auburn and Georgia before Bama lambasts us. Montario Hardesty is apparently slowly climbing into a potential first day draft pick and Bryce Brown is really good. Janzen Jackson and Chris Walker may be studs next year too.

I haven't seen much of anything that leads me to believe that the secondary is overrated. They've certainly been helped by a great front seven, but they are a great unit too. The front seven was excellent before 2007 too, but the defense (particularly the secondary) was terrible before this current group was put together. That means a lot. And the front seven is still very good this year. Albert is a great player, but Jason Jones showed he could be a great player last year, Vanden Bosch is healthy again and Kearse/Ford/Ball are good at solid. Add in Jovan Haye in the middle, along with Vickerson and Tony Brown and that line is still very good.

Albert Haynesworth is a fantastic defensive lineman, but there's so much talent along the line other than him. The line has proven it can get pressure without Albert and the secondary has proven it can cover with the best of them without him. Albert was a massive force, but he never started more than 14 games in a year and he sat out quite a few snaps in those games he played. This current secondary has been together since 2007. In those years, the defense has ranked 8th and 2nd in points allowed. The year before the main four (Harper, Finnegan, Hope and Griffin), the Titans ranked 31st in points allowed - with Albert on the team. And for what it's worth, I haven't seen an analysis yet that doesn't have the Titans' secondary in the top 5-10 (at worst) of NFL secondaries. Usually they're top 1-5.

I wouldn't have a lot of interest in Young. If he's not slugging, he's not doing much. His career OBP is .306 and two out of his 4 ML years he's had a .308 OBP. UZR also isn't a big fan of his - he has a career -11.2 UZR and is at -4.8 this year in center.

They are still a good team but not the team of last year. Even my brother who is a huge Titans fan admits that. The secondary is awful and by awful I mean worst in the league so far. They could win 10-11 games at best unless the secondary gets sorted out they start getting a push up the middle. That would be down from last year. It's easily one of the most talented secondaries in the game today. The secondary has been bad since the fourth quarter of the Pittsburgh game, but a lot of that has been blown coverages - likely due to adjustments to the new scheme. I'll be utterly shocked if the secondary doesn't improve significantly. Like I said before, we won't win 13 games this year, but we were extremely unlikely to match that again this year. I've thought since before the year started that we were likely a 10-11 win team this year. We can still reach that, even after the 0-2 start.

If there's one thing the Colts have, it's leadership. Between Peyton, Wayne, Clark, Sanders and Saturday, leadership won't be a problem for that team. If anything, because of the youth of Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon, the Colts are probably going to be better as the season progresses than they are now. Collie fits the Indy system to a tee and Garcon has great deep speed it appears - which is a fantastic new option for Peyton. If a team doubles Wayne like the Dolphins did Monday night, Peyton will still have one great option - Clark - and two good options - Collie and Garcon. The Colts also like throwing to their backs out of the backfield and both Addai and Brown are at least decent at those. The NFC West will help them, but I fully expect the Titans to improve. The lone weak spots appear to be the secondary and special teams so far and the secondary is bound to improve. Special teams wasn't good last year and probably won't be good this year. Titans won't win 13 again almost certainly, but they'll still give Indy a fight.

There's a lot of assumption going on (as there has to be this early in the year), but my thinking is that the defense will improve back toward last year's state and the offense has been extremely impressive (ranked 2nd in points and 3rd in yards). Like Exile said, though, the Pats, Titans, Steelers, etc. are going to improve at some point and it's too early to really name a team the best in the NFL.

Jackson hasn't been practicing, I'm not sure if he'll play or not.

Yuck. Cadillac Thanks. That's what I figured, but wasn't sure since Tampa plays the Giants. Chris Johnson is my top RB, but I don't have much at the secondary position right now.

Yeah, and I said I'd be ok with Abreu at around what he's making this year. There's a huge defensive difference between him and Cameron which, I think, likely makes up much of the offensive difference between them.

Both Abreu and Dye are barely slightly better hitting right fielders and significantly worse fielding right fielders. That makes their overall value worse than Cameron's. And we're not only looking at center fielders, but there's no reason not to. If there is a right fielder who is more valuable overall than Cameron would be, I'd be all for him. Problem is, that player (Bay and Holliday, for example) will almost certainly be out of our price range. Cameron is undervalued, though, and would come at a lower price than he's actually worth.

Dye 2009 OPS: .796 Abreu 2009 OPS: .817 Cameron 2009 OPS: .790 Abreu and Dye are bad to terrible defenders, while Cameron is excellent. I wouldn't be opposed to Abreu for somewhere around what he's making this year ($5 million), but there's at least a decent chance Cameron will be more valuable than either of those players next year. As for Fox, he's also very bad defensively in right field and we don't know for sure whether he can hit better than Cameron or not. He's at an .825 OPS so far this year, but his August OPS (the month with his most ABs this year) is only .746. Here are the defensive numbers for 2009, according to UZR: Fox: -2.5 Dye: -15.5 Abreu: -6.2 Cameron: 11.3 Fox, Dye and Abreu are all for right field, while Cameron is for center field.

I definitely agree with this. If I was going to assign a best team in the NFL right now (which it's too early to do that), it'd be Baltimore.

Reed is actually a decent amount better than Byrnes. Byrnes OPS in 2008-2009: .641 and .619 Reed OPS in 2008-2009: .778 and .722 My god, I didn't think Byrnes was that bad. Did he even play the last 2 years? Those are Doug Dascenzo numbers. Just 52 and 76 games the last two years, respectively, and I'm not sure if it was injury or just underperforming and the DBacks having other options. Either way, I wouldn't have interest in him.

He has no business starting a MLB game right now. I wish the FO would stop being jackasses and just let him sit in the minors for a full season and work on stuff. Instead of jacking him around from the minors and majors 20 times a season. While having him up in the pen throughout the season at this point is stupid, I don't see the harm in letting him get an actual start right now with the Cubs all but out of it and the minor league season done. Yeah, the best thing for him right now is probably just to pitch and work on confidence and refining his stuff. He has the stuff to succeed, so if he can have a successful start or two to end the year, maybe it'll help him.

Mitch Atkins, Esmailin Caridad, Casey Fossum and maybe JR Mathes are all guys who could be added to the 40 man roster (Atkins and Caridad are already on it) and make a start or two. I wouldn't mind seeing what kind of stuff Atkins and Caridad have in a starting role anyway. -
What better options are there that could be affordable? If somebody will take Bradley's contract, that's one thing, but it's very unlikely.

Titans really need to win this week. We can still make 3-3 by the bye week if we beat the Jets and Jags and one of the Pats/Colts. Hopefully the secondary will fix whatever issues caused the numerous blown coverages last week. Pressuring Sanchez and controlling the running game will probably be the best strategy Sunday. The line has to open up holes for CJ and LenDale so that Ryan's blitzes don't affect Collins.

He's a freshman, he'll learn. Jimmy Claussen was the same way a couple of years ago and he turned out ok. Aaron Corp is actually a redshirt sophomore, but this is his first year getting collegiate playing time. Was thinking about Barkley for some reason. Brain cramp. Still, this is his first time actually facing live in-game action. I still think he'll be an all right QB. I agree with that.
