  1. Weeeee! Peyton gets to carve us up like a halloween pumpkin on Sunday Night Football. We suck. I expect Vince to be the starting QB after the Indy and New England games. As for Sunday, Cortland and Jason Jones need to be back for us to have a chance to slow down the Colts.
  2. Not sure if you were serious, but they do, in fact, exist. They're both 1-AA teams. Jackson State is probably best known as Walter Payton's alma mater. I never knew that. I refuse to use that term. I saw no reason to change it from 1-AA. [-(
  3. I doubt Berry will be the first pick in the draft. Is he even that great of a prospect? Absolutely. Berry is the best safety in the draft and fairly easily the best safety in the NCAA. He's a fantastic player on one of the best defenses in the league and he's a big part of our defensive success. For what it's worth, Monte Kiffin said he'd take Berry with whatever pick he had, even #1. How many safeties ever go no. 1? Very few (if any). That's why I doubt he'll go #1 overall. However, top 2-5 is not out of the question and top 10-15 is pretty much a certainty at this point. He could also be a corner in the NFL, though I think safety is his best position. Most draft experts have Berry as a top 5 pick and the first safety taken overall. There's some really nice talent at the top of this draft, though, so he might fall a few spots if no team has a need at S/CB.
  4. That's precisely why I put the for what it's worth there. However, this was shortly after Monte took the job and had barely even met Berry.

  6. I'm admittedly not a big statistician (though I like following some of the SABR stats), so 35 runs surrendered defensively just seems like an incredible number to give up. It may be accurate, it just seems really, really high. It's not a real number. It's a number in comparison to the mythical average player. It says he was pretty bad, I don't think it has any worth in quantifying just how bad to an exact degree. Also, UZR sucks and it sucks the worst for outfielders. So in conclusion, I wouldn't put much of anything in using the number for an argument. We all know Dunn is a pretty bad defender, I don't think anyone can tell how bad in relation to most of the league. Ah, that's right. I think I remember that now. Dunn's defense is really bad, but like I've been saying, 35 runs below average seems to be too much.
  7. I noticed the "Forum" in the link was capitalized and I remembered somebody mentioning that it now needed to be lower cased, but I wasn't sure if that was it and I didn't want to lead you on some wild goose chase since I know nothing about stuff like that. Was that the issue? They all work for me now, by the way.

  9. Tim, Under the "active conversations" tab on the main page the links to the threads don't work. I think they're linked wrong.
  10. I doubt Berry will be the first pick in the draft. I really doubt it. I guess the Titans might as well win a couple games then.
  11. Ok, maybe I'm misusing the word then.
  12. That's not how it's been defined by much of the media though. People have been painting the picture that parity=mediocirity=everybody goes 7-9 or 9-7. The NFL is set-up so that any team can recover from being horrible and win big in a short amount of time. You can suck every year if you are run by incompetent morons, Detroit. And I think that's a very good thing for a sport. I haven't really heard that definition of parity, but if that's what they're pushing, it's wrong. Parity means terrible/mediocre teams can improve quickly (SF, Denver, Cincy) and good teams can collapse (Ten, Dal?). The NFL does have parity this year.
  13. Nobody ever claimed there to be parity after only 4 games. That's silly. The Broncos aren't going to win all their games, and the Titans (presumeably) won't lose all of theirs. It will even out over the long run of the season. I almost want to see us get into the Eric Berry sweepstakes at this point, so why not? That's what I think it means as well.
  14. does that feel right to you? 35 runs? he played 84 games in the of and 67 at first base. just because we have easy access to uzr doesn't mean we should just accept it as gospel. Yeah, I like UZR and realize Dunn is an atrocious defender, but 35 runs in that many games seems a bit too high. UZR consistenly has Dunn as a -20 defender or worse. Even if 35 is an outlier, the crux of Rob's point is still true. Dunn's defense destroys most of his overall value, to the point where he's not worth his contract. I agree his poor defense hurts his overall value, but the 35 runs seems a bit high.
  15. I don't know how good they are exactly, but consider last year's team was without Carson Palmer, no running game (til late when Benson came on), an uninspired Ochocinco and a rash of LB injuries. Now, Carson is healthy, Benson has given them a solid ground game, the linebackers are healthy and Ocho is playing hard again. They're a pretty good team.
  16. I think it's also a sign that even in the NFL, good coaching can make a difference. McDaniels, it appears, is a really good coach and he's surrounded himself with some very good coaches as well.

  18. Just out of curiosity, what is it about Fredi that makes him so appealing to you? Him coming out of the Braves organization (and from coaching under Bobby Cox) had me somewhat interested when we hired Lou, but are you more familiar with him? He's half Bobby Cox - half sabermetrics. He's the guy I originally wanted to hire when we opted to go with Lou instead. That's a fantastic mix. I remembered you wanted him originally - and I was interested as well - but I just didn't remember enough about him.
  19. I could see Sandberg doing that as one of those "I'm the manager and you will do what I tell you moments" just to make a point. I can't believe he did this on a regular basis. Living just south of Knoxville, I heard a number of Smokies games. Ryno calling for a bunt from the #3 hitter was a bit out of the ordinary, but he consistently wanted to bunt runners over, hit and run and made a number of outs trying to steal third or being too aggressive sending runners to third (he was the third base coach). With Lou as manager, though, I don't know that any of that would translate to him as a hitting coach. Just as a manager.
  20. My thoughts on the Broncos: If the defense is going to be that good, they don't need much from Orton to win (see: the Bears past 3-4 years). However, there is no scenario in which they are a better team because of the QB change. Well they've had 3 cupcake teams, and then the Cowboys. They have a brutal 4 game schedule coming up. If they win 1 or 2 of the next 4, then they can brag. The Bengals aren't a cupcake team. The Broncos may or may not be the real deal, but they've had two very legit wins now (Dallas and Cincy). Come on though. I'm not a big believer in luck, but 99/100 Denver loses that Cincy game. I'm very hesitant to call that a "legit win," they looked pretty bad most of the game and snatched the victory on one nearly impossible play. Good point. It was a fluke win over a legit team is how I should have phrased it.
  21. Not sure if you were serious, but they do, in fact, exist. They're both 1-AA teams. Wofford's played about 8 teams in the top 25 this year, so I'm sure the school exists. I'm not sure the football team existed before each of those teams paid the school $200k-$500k for the honor of getting their ass kicked. I'd round up a football team if it meant getting paid $200-$500k to get demolished. Happily. Sure you would. But it's a tad embarrassing for a big time college program to dole out that much money 3 times a year rather than playing real teams home and home. I can see how it's necessary to complete a schedule at times. But it's ridiculous how frequently some teams do it. Yeah, I don't really like championship contending teams scheduling 1-AA teams, but it's very pricey (like nearly $1 million per game according to UT's AD) to schedule the lower level 1-A teams and it's likely very difficult to schedule more than one home/home series with other elite teams more than once per year. Also, the BCS system discourages scheduling too many tough games. For instance, OU scheduled two tough teams and are now likely out of the national championship picture. Had they scheduled Wofford and Jackson State instead of BYU and Miami, they'd still be in the picture.
  22. I knew he hurt his knee, but wasn't sure how serious it was. If there's anything wrong with it, the best thing to do would probably be to sit him out.

  24. Having actually watched him play for an antire game, I'll agree he's likely the real deal, though still young and mistake prone. The Lions have a good one. That first half he carved us up. Yeah, he's incredibly talented but very, very raw. That's partly why I'm looking at any kind of upward trend as a positive. I figured he'd struggle more than Mark Sanchez early on (Sanchez is more polished), but I think Stafford has more upside.
