  1. This current team isn't much worse than the '03 Cubs, the biggest dropoff has been the bullpen and the health of Kerry. But, this Cubs team even when healthy isn't close to where the '05 Cards are. Of course, there are certain things you can try and do to address the health of a pitcher over the course of a season and blame luck when a pitcher gets injured. Getting a couple of key things that will change the dynamics of this team is easier said than done, I thought that was why traded Sosa.
  2. You shouldn't force them to say "under god" and you shouldn't force them to not say "under god". That is an individual choice not a tool of control.
  3. I just hate to see managers try and overshadow the work of a player. This kid busts his rear end to go from AA to the majors in the same season, sits behind stiffs who combined for an OPS around .600 and by default Baker has to play him. I'm supposed to recognize Baker's brilliance for sitting him for some scrubs b/c Murton has worked his rear off and done well? Please... It might be cool to try and be trendy and go against the grain in this thread but logic tells me otherwise in the case of how Murton has been handled. I don't give a crap of how Baker handled Minor, Aurilia, Clayton or Van landingham in SF.
  4. He's being accurate by using hindsight? There's no chance in hell that Murton is hitting as well as he is b/c of his playing time compared to you know his actual hitting talents and approach at the plate. There's no reason for Dusty to try and incorporate the way he handled Murton into the logic of Murton hitting so well unless he's trying to stroke his own ego (pun intentional for my last post) or pat himself on the back for a job well done while Hollandsworth stunk it up after they unloaded Lawton to the Yanks. Great job Dusty, I wish I could give him as much credit as he gives to himself and then I could accept mediocrity as "not my fault" when I screw up, but I believe in accountability.
  5. I think it is hard to find some objectivity in his quote, he's perfoming mental masturbation on himself with that recent quote. Now, if you're talking Baker's overall tenure.... If I said Baker is a bad fit for this club and they should look for a new manager ASAP (which I have), in the overall scheme of things, I'm saying the exact same thing as someone calling him an idiot in the context of Baker managing the Cubs just not as glossy. But, I don't think Baker is an idiot. He's just poor with words and flawed beliefs when it comes to baseball that differ from me.
  6. I think Hendry's ceiling as a GM is probably similar to that of what Hunsicker accomplished with Houston. I think they are similar as far as beliefs, I think Hunsicker is more likely to build from within. Him and Pupura rebuilt that farm system.. Oswalt, Berkman, Hidalgo, Abreu (biggest mistake), Johan Santana, F. Garcia, Miller, etc... If you gave me a choice at this stage, I would take Hunsicker simply b/c I think he would concentrate more from building within. I think Hunsicker would be prone to making a larger financial mistake though, his history of signing Bagwell, Hidalgo, and Ausmus scares me, but I would take that chance as long as the Cubs could build a Venezuelan pipeline like the Stros did.
  7. I don't think anyone on this board except for a few Q&As have played pro ball, why should anyone on this board be critical of anyone in the game? Let's hold hands and sing the praises b/c we have no idea of what should be done and they do. I don't think Miles should offer up an opinion either, despite following the Cubs years upon years, his lack of experience makes any crticism of the team invalid. What the hell, let's shut down this message board too, there are too many negative opinions from unqualified posters. And how dare you say he is behind the times, what is your playing experience?
  8. Really, UK? I figure Hunsicker would want to stay as far away from Baltimore as possible since they have a meddlesome owner. I thought that is what partly drove Hunsaker away from Houston. Or was it that Drayton McLane was too cheap? I'd like to see him in BAL though, as I think he would do a good job there. It was both, he didn't like the budget constraints which often led to disputes/meddling with their owner. I think Angelos will give him a higher budget and the control he wants. I think a better question than Riccardi or Hendry is would you rather have Hunsicker or Hendry?
  9. If they go for a stop-gap, I'd hope they go for someone younger (Langerhans from Atl./Stern from Bost.). As far as Stern, that is under the assumption the Sox bring back damon. If they went with someone older, I'd rather see Lofton than Burnitz.
  10. http://www.freep.com/sports/tigers/tcorn19e_20050919.htm Let's see here... '04 overspend for Urbina. '05 overspend for Percival. '05 trade for Farnsworth for little given up. Now, Urbina is traded for Polanco, Percival is injured, and they trade Farnsworth b/c he would likely test FA and not return. What does the article mention? Bringing Farnsworth back. Unreal.
  11. Huh? He played 145 games last year. For GM, I'm surprised Gerry Hunsaker hasn't been mentioned. I thought he did a nice job putting together HOU's club during the 90's. I think Hunsicker will be picked up this year, if I was to guess, I would say Baltimore.
  12. Change to IU fans and welcome to the basketball season. I wonder if Hep can coach b-ball? I don't think IU is a bad team, maybe below average but are well-coached (can't believe that is being said about IU football). So I guess all I can say... get used to the defeat. IU will get a wakeup call in the Big 10... I witnessed nothing against UK that deserved praise beyond a team destined to go 4-7 or 5-6 if they pull an upset. I have confidence in UK, just not this year or with the current coaching staff.

  14. Perez and then figure out whether the general manager or the coach is responsible for leaving such poor options avail. None of them are likely to get the job done.
  15. Great job by Brooks... This was the defining moment of his tenure at UK.
  16. I couldn't believe they'd call a toss sweep on 4th and 1 with UK's inability to block.
  17. My last game of the year and lasting impression of the '05 Cubs is the Sunday debacle against the DBacks about a month ago. I'll be in Clev. for the final weekend of the year and hopefully the playoffs as well. Between Clev. and STL, the decision to drive 4+ hours is quite an easy one of which city to go to.
  18. Raisin, did you see the 4th and 1 on IU's 7yd line?
  19. UK has looked awful vs. a bad team. Worst coaching staff in the nation, UK fans will use the injury excuse as well as the sanctions instead of lack of preparation and fundamentals. Brooks will be back next year. Am I talking about Brooks or Baker? :x
  20. That game is being telecast on ESPN Classic. For some reason I don't normally think of IU-UK football and "classic" in the same breath. :D UK has played 2 of the 1st 3 on ESPN Classic, somehow they didn't show them playing Idaho St.?
  21. Solid game between the Sox and Twins, Garland has pitched well bnesides the mistake to Jones. He's gone more to the 4 seamer than I've seen in the past and used his sinker as a strikeout pitch on LeCroy and Stewert. Baker has been solid as well, using all 9 sectors of the strike zone effectively. Hasn't used much of a breaking pitch and his change and been ok but well-timed.
  22. Rusch has a 2.5 mil option for next year, the Cubs would be handcuffed pending his decision. Either way, if he leaves via FA or trade, it would be a benefit to the Cubs and him. He'd likely go to a team where he can lock down a #5 and the Cubs could use that 2.5 mil elsewhere and go with Williams as the #5 or someone via FA (Millwood) until some starters hit the DL.
  23. The best way to do that is by changing something with the approach, not the amount. Maybe he isn't spending enough time focusing on location during his pregame session. He misses his spots early on and when Prior misses, his solid control bites him the rear, as his pitches aren't balls since they move to the heart of the plate.
  24. in theory increasing his work load b4 the game will shorten his outing, but when you consider that he's throwing 30-40 pitches in the first inning, it might be better to increase his pre game load in a controlled setting rather than have him throw 35 pitches in a game situation.i dunno, just a thought For me, it's not about increasing his IP, it's about limiting his workload throughout the season. You're only talking about increasing the IP while increasing the workload.
