  1. Yeah, let's just get rid of that Prior guy. Wood never amounted to much, either. Ya gotta love hyperbole. Who needs a productive farm system? The Cubs have usually had a terrible one and look how far not having a farm system has got them.
  2. I wonder what the implications are as far as how much salary does Bruce Miles think Philly will absorb of Abreu's contract? If Furcal's contract (assuming he's signed) prevents the Cubs from going after Giles, the Phillies would have to eat a large portion of Abreu's contract to get it down to even similar figures as the expected contract of Giles.
  3. I was impressed with what Lee and Ramirez did, before the Ramirez injury they were just as good if not more productive than Ramirez and Ortiz in Boston. You don't have to have power in all 8 spots, but those who don't have power damn sure have to know how to get to 1B without having to walk back to dugout right after reaching it (OBP).
  4. I think he would improve it, I'd say Castillo would be more productive at the top of the order than Walker. It would also improve the defense at the up the middle as well. Going from a combo of Walker-Perez/Nomar to Castillo/Cedeno is an upgrade defensively as well as offensively. Depending on their budget and who would have to be included, I think Castillo would be a nice fit at the top. I'd address RF and Cf 1st, though.
  5. Wouldn't Sweeney replace what Holla should have been, while Mabry would be more of a Macias replacement? Ideally, yes. But, Mabry would likely serve as the 4th OF'er and 1st PH option off the bench. The role Mabry would likely serve is the ideal role for someone like Sweeney.
  6. As a Cubs fan, hope is the one thing you can hold onto. (until the season starts :) )
  7. What the hell is Gillick doing? Supposedly telling the Yanks that Michaels is off the table and then acq'g Rowand. I have no idea, with Burrell, Abreu, Michaels, Victorino, and Rowand. All 5 won't be on the roster by ST.
  8. He's nothing special, if what makes him appealing to fans is that it removes Macias from the roster or his ability to play several positions moreso than his production, then I wonder how productive was he? Like CP mentioned Sweeney would look great in this role, might've cost more, but would've brought more production.
  9. Happy Holidays to you too! Philly will still use him incorrectly as a platoon player. I would've rather seen that be the Cubs than the Yanks though.
  10. If the Cubs consider Raul Valdez a high ceiling prospect, they'd be able to fall back to only '04. Personally, signing a 26yo. out of Cuba and sticking him the DSL doesn't cut it for me. The Cubs signed Pie on July 3rd of 2001. Now, it's too unusual to see players progressing that were signed in '00 and '01 as they're still around 20. But, you would've seen a greater impact at Boise, Peoria, and Mesa than you did. Players like Pinto, Guzman, and Cedeno were signed in '99 to give you an idea of progression from Latin America.
  11. They've increased their payroll though. All is well when trying to emulate the Yankees. :pukel: Except for the whole winning thing. BTW, UK, are you as livid as I am about giving up draft picks on top of the millions and the guaranteed roster spots for middle relievers? I'm not as livid as you as they needed to address the pen, they'll improve the pen. But, overspent in both years and dollars per. I'll be livid if these signings impact their bigger weaknesses. But, losing draft picks always hurts more when your Latin program has gone down the drain and the Pacific Rim scouting was being run by someone looking for greener pastures with no one set-up to take his place. As I always ponder and it would be the 1st question I'd ever ask Hendry, who was the last high ceiling prospect to be signed out of the DR, Pacific Rim, or Venezuela and when was he signed?
  12. They'll likely get rid of at least 1 of the 2 overpaid pitchers in the rotation and replace them with Reyes, so if there isn't any drop-off from the 3-4 pitchers, they'll get more value per $.
  13. They've had a very good bullpen combined with relative good health to Carpenter (last year he broke down at the end), but if you're able to get good health out of your #1 and then have several #3 starters stay healthy, you'll be in good shape. mulder just gave them a #2 starter compared to Williams in '04. Based on talent, I'd say Carp. is a #1, Mulder a #2, Suppan a #3, Morris a #4, and Marquis a #5. How is that different from other staffs? Most don't have the #1/2 combo at the top and most don't have them getting over 950IP or whatever it was.
  14. They've increased their payroll though. All is well when trying to emulate the Yankees. :pukel:
  15. Even if the Cubs packed the line-up top to bottom with terrific players, I'd still worry about that first round of injuries and management's inability to recognize team needs and winning baseball. Being able to fill out a proper line-up card by default doesn't cure the ills of poor management. Thus, I'm relegated to not only hoping the Cubs improve the quality of players in their line-up, but also that those same players stay healthy. I'd also like $25 million while I'm asking for the moon... You have to cross each bridge one at a time. I'd like to cross the "Cubs have a stacked line-up" bridge 1st. :)
  16. I thought UK played terrible, they missed way too many easy shots and cont. to shoot under 70 percent from the line. Shag hasn't been able to develop an inside game and Woo hasn't done anything wither. UK will need Morris and someone like Crawford to go along with Rondo to drive to the hoop. I was terribly disappointed in that game.
  17. I'll reserve my opinion until I see what has been done to improve this inconsistent offense. If they're able to improve it to what should amount to a reasonable level, I'll be content with these signings. But, if remaining payroll comes into question why the Cubs would not pursue a Giles or look into a trade for Abreu, I'll blame Hendry for these two signings. They improve the pen, but increases the chances of "settling" for a decent RF'er/Cf'er and having a terrible bench again. Their #1 priority ahould be getting an elite RF'er and an above avg. CF'er, before anything else.
  18. Does Sean still keep in contact with Walt Nolan? I was surprised he was released by the Cubs, but I heard Walt has a tryout with the Marlins. It was good that they were roommates.
  19. What if he factored Abreu's contract into the equation? Would it still be proof of players gaining momentum?
  20. I've probably missed it, but based on your stance on a couple other players, I have to ask... who exactly DO you want? Adam Dunn Wilkerson Bradley Marcus Giles Coco Crisp pitchers: zito/burnett/beckett (i.e. another front line starter) howry I realize we're probably not going to get any of these players. So you would rather have Wilkerson, Bradley or Crisp over Abreu? I think this is proof that some players gain momentum on this bd without really deserving it. Here's a Wilkerson v. Abreu comparison: http://www.baseballreference.com/a/abreubo01.shtml http://www.baseballreference.com/w/wilkebr01.shtml For those of you who don't feel like opening the links: Abreu's OBP has been over .400 six of the last seven years. Wilkerson's career high OBP is .380, and that was in 2003. Are you talking about straight-up or does their contracts factor into the decision? Abreu's contract is a negative as far as whether to go after him compared to Wilkerson, Bradley, Crisp, etc..
  21. I'm glad Sean was somewhat disappointed with BA's ranking of him when they list the Cubs top 30. Hopefully, he'll use it as motivation given his age and performance at Peoria. Personally, I have him pegged between 5-10 and not 12-15 where BA will likely put him.
  22. It'll be a good race to see who cliches 1st between the Bears and Colts. If the Bears go 2-4 in their last 6, GB will have to go 6-0, Detroit will have to go 5-1, and Minn depending on what they do tomorrow night will either be down 2 or 3 games and if they lose to the Bears would face a similar scenario as Detroit. After they lost to Cleveland, I would have never imgained this.
  23. Eh, it didn't work. Pressure with only 4 makes a huge difference.
  24. 3rd and short, run the ball. 1st down, playaction pass.
  25. As much as I want them to pass more, I was thinking I hope they run it here.
