  1. Hopefully, the Bears won't go thru this every week w/Jones. I'd sit him out next week vs. SF as the Bears get ready for a tougher stretch.
  2. As far as Grossman/Orton, if the Bears maintain a 2/3 game lead, I think they'll stick with Orton. Personally, I'd go with Grossman and hope he provides a spark to the passing game.
  3. Poor 1st half by Orton, NO is keying the run and the Bears haven't been able to open it up b/c of Orton. Defense has been soft, especially on 3rd down.
  4. Bears favored on the road, one team going up and the other going down. Bears will score at least 1 TD on defense or special teams. Benson will get 50 yards and the Bears will beat a slumping Saints team 24-13.
  5. Beane was in charge of Howe's fate and the 25 guys Howe could use, as far as in-game managing, that was all on Howe and that's why he was canned. Now, how does that potentially apply to Hendry/Baker?
  6. I disliked their roles and not them.
  7. He is quite the reclusive one, ain't he.
  8. Just exploring this a little more: by your logic, since baseball is such an indivdual's sport, and the "team concept" means little, can one man carry his team to victory without help from his teammates? Technically no. But a pitcher can get very close. Although, very unlikely, a National League pitcher could strike out all 27 men in a perfect game and hit a solo HR for the only score. The only reason he can't completely carry his team to victory is that he needs a catcher to catch the ball. Ok, but since that happens about once every ice age, would you agree that 99% of the time a pitcher must rely on his teammates to properly catch and throw the ball (including throwing to the correct base, executing run-downs, etc.)? No, defensive variations between the best teams and the worst teams are so little, it is quite different than other sports. The talent differences between a good and a bad team is always which team has the advantage in the pitcher/batter confrontations not one defense vs. another. Of course, the hitter/pitcher battle is a 2 person battle and not a 18 player battle, unlike the 22 in FB or 10 in Basketball.
  9. I think that's incorrect. They disagreed, Howe gave his opinion, Beane told him where he could put that opinion in no uncertain terms, Howe ignored the warning, and Howe lost his job, in spite of the fact that his team had won 100 games that year. Disagree with what? The manager having the final say on which player plays and which is player is replaced in a particular situation in a game? Howe had his ideas of how the 25 guys Beane brought him should be utilized and Beane has his idea, they weren't on the same wavelength and Beane in his position of authority wanted someone who was likely to manage the game similar to how Beane would. Like I said, you think Hendry would tell Baker how to manage? I don't.
  10. They disagreed on who should play and who shouldn't and Howe was canned. Beane offered opinions on who should play, but Howe had the final say. Can you actually see Hendry telling Baker; Cedeno should play and why Perez shouldn't? I can't, it'll never happen.
  11. You misread my logic. No one player can win it by himself. But, one can have a much greater impact in an individual game in baseball than any other sport. A player's production in baseball is less impacted by his teammates than FB, basketball, etc. Chemistry is a nice romantic term, lacks substance but requires an emotional tug.
  12. Luckily Giles or Matsui can play CF for the Yankees. Unless there's an odd DH involved, I don't see it happening as far as both of them going there. Matsui would look good too.
  13. A GM doesn't tell a manager who to play or who not to play, a GM fires a manager who isn't on the same page as him. Hendry would be overstepping his boundaries if he wanted to become an arm-chair manager, that's our job.
  14. In baseball, it is the most individualistic sport of all the major sports. If a pitcher pitches well, he'll likely give his team a much better chance of winning even the offense doesn't show up compared to if a QB has a strong game throwing the ball, but can't get enough time to throw or his WRs can't get open. Even Jordan in his prime couldn't carry the Bulls if the other 4 guys beside him were having an off night. In Baseball, you rely less on your teammates than any other sport besides individual sports (golf, singles tennis) obviously. Also, the game is decided when two players confront each other (pitcher/batter) not 11/11 or 5/5, separate circumstances as far as lumping football and baseball together in this regard.
  15. Matt Morris and Robert Fick.
  16. Have to get rid of Baker 1st, Baker would play him over Cedeno as he did last year and he would hit Perez at the top of the order, like he did last year. History isn't on Baker's side, as far as utilizing Perez properly. He's an ideal 25th man, which is currently occupied by a player who was used too often last year and should not be on the roster this year.
  17. UK covered the spread and played probably their 2nd best game offensively. They still lost 49-27.
  18. Chemistry is only as good as the production that surrounds it.
  19. That's fine, but for 3mil. the Cubs have larger holes to worry about than insurance policies. It would've been an ideal time to utilize Hill in an insurance role and put the 3mil to better use. If the Cubs value Rusch more than Williams at this stage, it tells something I don't want to know about this team. Early indications have Rusch being the #5 before Williams and that's a poor early indicator.
  20. I can't see must of a case why you'd want Rusch starting over Williams. There are times when they should look down the road and examine short-term/long-term analysis. If you think Rusch would be better in the short-term over Williams, ask yourself if the 3mil was worth it also. How much of a difference would there be between Williams and Rusch over the next 25-30 starts? Personally, I think Williams would do better under that scenario.
  21. Bring on Auburn, win #3! Need 2 wins vs. D-I opponents this year.
  22. Gillick would definitely be a good hire for Philly, he has had great success for almost the last 30 years before leaving Seattle. Dayton Moore is still #1 on my potential GM list.
  23. I'd pass, better set-up options are avail. and they don't have prior closing experience which might lower contract demands than Looper despite being more productive than Looper.
  24. I'd still rather have Dusty and I've been one of the more vocal Dusty detractors. This current team obviously still has a large % from the '04 roster and there is still likely a high % those who took sides with the "Stone vs. Cubs" episodes during the '04 season. Stone could possibly be better at in-game managing than Baker, but there would be too many hurdles for him to manage this current cubs roster. Although this is all hypothetical, Stone would have to prove to me 1st that he can be a better manager than Baker w/out ever coaching. Dierker was able to do that in a short amount of time, so it certainly isn't out the realm of possibility, but I'd take Baker and his numerous faults at this stage over Stone.
  25. I'm thinking Boston goes for the Epstein clone in Antonetti of Clev.
